“First class hotel and a very enjoyable holiday (Irving extended family)”
Reviewed 21 July 2009

We were very apprehensive about going to Hotel Albatros as at the end of May and the first week in June we read they were invaded by two large parties of Irish and that our holiday would be spoilt as it was close to the airport. Yes there were planes passing over the hotel but not at all intrusive and as to say you would need ear plugs and that you would be woken up in the morning was utter nonense. It was an advantage as it only took less than 10 minutes from the airport to the hotel where we were checked in by very pleasant reception staff and our cases were taken to our room. Anna our rep was a charming local girl and was very knowledgable. Our rooms were large and spotlessly clean as was the rest of the hotel complex. We found all the hotel staff pleasant and helpful. The food was buffet style and we never had to queue. Breakfast pancakes and fried eggs were always cooked fresh. In the evening there was a variety of food and fish and meats were cooked in front of you on the griddle. Yes the drinks and icecream were more expensive in the hotel but isn't that the same anywhere.
There are several bars just outside of the hotel on the waters edge where we ate mid-day and went there in the ev ening to watch the amazing sunset. The waiters there were charming and spoke english very well. We took the boat to Dubrovnik twice and it took about 30 minutes. The 2nd time we left late afternoon and had a meal in a restaurant overlooking the harbour. As the boats never ran in the evening and apparently you had to change 3 times on the buses we had a taxi back to Cavtat and there were 5 of us and it took about 40 minutes and cost 250 kuna. I hope this will reassure you if you are booked to go to the Albatros that you will have a enjoyable holiday and if you are booked with Thomsons please go and see Anna and say hello to her from us. By the way the Irish parties were only booked in for the last week in May and first week of June and will not be visiting again this holiday season 2009. It would be advisable if you are thinking of going in 2010 season to check to make sure that the Irish Company haven't made a reservation.

My wife and I have just returned from 2 weeks at the Hotel Albatros.
Where to start? Good points: Hotel is in a lovely location, spotlessly clean, large nice rooms with fridge and air conditioning, friendly and helpfull staff and the food was good for buffet style.
Bad points: It was full of the most ignorant bad mannered people I have ever encountered. No one says thenkyou to anyone for anything, doors are let go in your face. People enter the lift whilst you are trying to get out. Sun beds are claimed en-mass and not occupied until late afternoon. People from the other Iberostar hotels are welcome to use the Albatros facilities which they do in droves. The pool area and facilities are much better than the others which begs the question, why have I paid for 4* facilities only to find I cannot use them due to people from other hotels taking over.

The road into Cavtat is a lovely walk and a white line has been painted on the road for pedestrians to use. It is a one way system (or supposed to be but is flaunted by both cars and scooters). This pedestrian area has prooved invaluable for the locals who park thier cars on it, forcing pedestrians to walk in the middle of the road and get 'beeped' by cars. I am supprised ther have not been accidents.

Restaurants in the town vary. Some get you in with a smile, feed you ASAP and get you out again. Others are truley wonderful, The Pacific especially.

All in all a good holiday but spoilt by some of the residents and local people, who need to decide if they want tourists or not.

And beware of the 'fish picnics'. 100 or so people crowded onto a boat that stpos at 3 islands. One for 30 mins another for 45mins while they grill some fish which you eat as they sail to the last Island where you have about 2 hours to spend. Crowded and again full of rude people sitting in whatever seat they feel like at the time and drinking all the wine and water. Some even helped themselves to the remaining bottles as they got off the boat.

The 3rd and last time we visit the area

Hotel was fine. Yes the Irish entertainment? was rubbish but there are 3 bars within 50 yards to escape to and cavtat only 15 minute walk. rooms spotless. food plentiful and varied. yes buffet style but this is a holiday hotel not the ritz..the staff were pleasant and helpful. only real complaint and I have seen this comment before was that the pools were freezing! which is why no one was in them?. a hotel chain this size should be able to afford to heat them.

What an awful holiday experience ,courtesy of Balkan Holidays...Cavtat is indeed a lovely village - very scenic with lovely rocky coves and a spectacular mountain backdrop - Our Croatian holiday experience was ruined by the 500+ Irish holidaymakers who were on a "Paul Claffey Tour".They were promised sun ,fun and music... and they certainly got it.The music was unbearable, beginning at 9.00pm until the early hours of the morning. We were unfortunate enough to be situated in a room on the first floor ,Block B,close to the lounge area where the music blasted out each evening. We requested a room change but were told that the hotel was full and in any case the music could be heard throughout the hotel .We went to our room after dinner because there was nowhere else to go.We have never had such early nights on holiday. The noise was infuriating and constant. To be sure ,the Irish enjoyed a good craic i.e lots of fun ,music and generous amounts of drink. To be honest we are not big drinkers at all but there were times when we felt like getting smashed in the hope that we could get a good nights sleep. We tried to relax around the pool, but whenever we thought that we had found a quiet area ,a pack of them would descend around us ,cackling and generally creating noise pollution at its worst. We couldn't wait to come back home .I pitied those who had booked a two week holiday because on our last day an outside stage was being set up by the swimming pool ! therefore there would be no escape from the din.So ,"Hear me now, hear me now"Do not go here when the tour is due to arrive, you will be as miserable as we were.We are obviously making an official complaint to the tour company.

Other points worthy of note.

The hotel is nicely situated in a quiet area(usually !)
Food is reasonable .
Rooms kept clean.
Cavtat is small but quaint.
Dubrovnik well worth a visit,80 kuna return on the boat situated just outside the hotel.
Wine is poor quality

My husband and I have just returned from a week at the Albatros. The hotel itself is in a quiet location about 15 minutes stroll into Cavtat. The road isn't very busy but there is no footpath and you have to be aware of approaching traffic. Cavtat is very picturesque and there are a number of bars where you can sit and watch the world go by and admire the stunning yachts and boats, or climb the steps for wonderful views and investigate how the locals live. If you enjoy looking around shops there aren't that many, but there is an excellent ice cream parlour. The hotel room, whilst nothing special, was spacious and spotlessly clean. We had a couple of problems with the air conditioning and the safe which were sorted out within 30 minutes, and also our request for extra pillows. After speaking to other guests, it seems we were lucky that our room was located on a quiet wing overlooking the mountains and tennis courts with a bit of a sea view and not over the lounge, as we were not disturbed by the entertainment which, we were told, sometimes went on until about 1:30am. The bathroom looked to have been recently refurbished and was also spotless. The hotel staff were very well groomed, efficient and friendly, without being overbaring. There were plenty of good quality sun beds and the pools and surrounding areas were also spotless. Just a couple of things let the hotel down; one was the food - there was a good selection at both meals but the fresh fruit at breakfast was limited to mainly hard, tasteless pears and awful fruit cocktail and the cereal wasn't very interesting. The evening meals lacked plain pieces of meat or chicken in favour of stews and the vegetables were tasteless much of the time. Having said all that we didn't go hungry and if you like stews you'd be ok. Our main bug bear is that we were expecting something a little more cultural on the entertainment front, having chosen Croatia, but instead were treated to Irish cabaret EVERY evening curtesy of Paul Claffey Tours when the hundreds of Irish guest took over the lounge, occupying every available seat. Irish comedian Conal Gallen's act was tailored to the Irish audience with total disregard to other guests and if Mike Denver is your cup of tea (similar to Daniel O'Donnell) then that's fine - if you can get a seat! There was alternative entertainment outside geared to guests with children and two evenings we were forced to stand and watch the Irish entertainment because the weather was unsettled so it was unfit to sit outside or walk to Cavtat. We were thankful that we had only booked one week unlike some other guests which are now enduring another week. Some Irish guests left on Saturday morning only to be replaced by some more in the afternoon, with different entertainment planned for this coming week. We found many of these Irish guests to be ignorant - not even acknowleging a friendly smile let alone responding to "Good Morning". During the day we were in Croatia and then transported to Ireland every evening! We have never had as many early nights when on holiday!! It seems that Paul Claffey Tours were at the Albatross last year too and most likely will return in 2010? We will check details on the web site in future so we know which hotels and resorts to avoid and are very relieved to discover that our next holiday destination booked for later in the year is not listed in the schedule.

We wanted to find out about Croatia - the price we got on the hotel was great value - so good that we figured that even if the food was rubbish, we'd eat in one evening, and be quids-in.

What was good
The room was spotlessly clean (other guests didn't have the same experience, mind you), a good size, and with air con.
The food was goodish, of its kind - buffet, catering for an army, but there was enough choice, that if the sight of a factory-style approach to catering didn't put you off, and you don't mind eating with 300 others, then you can usually pick out something decent to eat. We were not enthusiatic about the lack of ambience, so took up the chance to eat at the sister hotel, the Cavtat instead, which suited us better.
The pool was clean, and, in May, had plenty of loungers/space.
Catering, maintenance and reception staff were fast, efficient and friendly - though the hotel is hugh, so don't expect to create anything like a rapport with them, and you are just one more face among many to them, but they work extremely hard - they impressed us.

Cavtat itself is pretty, and the sea in the area is fantastic if you enjoy snorkeling.

What was not
The biggest and worst thing about the hotel was the sheer ruddy noise they impose on guests - the 'animation' team - desperately hounding guests to join in; music & announcements blaring out of the stage prompt from 10am to 11pm, at regular intervals through the day. On one afternoon, a member of the team ranged among the guests at the poolside, calling them 'lazy' if they didn't leap up and join in forthwith.

Rooms to avoid - Block B - rooms that end in numbers between 47-53 (eg 348, 247) - have the 'stage' ouside them, with huge amplifiers, and this awful, awful 'entertainment' going on - if, like us, you like to sit and watch the sun go down in the evenings, from a balcony - forget it. It's boom, boom boom - or bingo, or 'euro quiz' or some other dreadful stuff blaring out over the tannoys till 11pm.

It'll never win any awards for architiecture - it is big, designed to pack plenty of people in - so its comfortable, clean, but a barren wasteland of miles of magnolia corridors and no feel of the local area. Not a crime in itself - it is what it is, but it would be depressing for a fortnight, I think.

But - and its a big but, the worst thing about it for us that we shared our time with a hugh group from Ireland - again, nothing against the Irish - my father was Donegal born and bred, so I've no problem there. There were many nice people among them. But, they were there to listen to, enjoy and revel in Country and Western music - they were allowed by the management to take over the main social area every evening for their own entertainment., using huge amps, and the rest of us were squeezed into the margins - but still had nowhere to escape from the endless noise of accordions, Jim Reeves tribute singers and really dire stand-up comedians who have been time-warped in from the 1970's. Fair enough, the group were entitled to their holiday, if that was what they liked, but I grew to resent constantly having it pushed in the faces of the rest of us. I felt like I was living in a Father Ted nightmare that would have had Father Jack running for the hills, sobbing..

I see from their website, they're booking again for the last week in May and the first week in June next year. I won't be going then. In fact, to be on the safe side, I won't be going again. Ever.

The hotel is set up to deal with huge numbers, and, the way I see it, you will always be at risk of a similar kind of experience from any other large group which happens to be there when you are. It was a holiday factory, pure and simple.

I think that the Albatros is a brilliant hotel. The two rooms we had booked were both very spacious with a safety deposit box and fridge we could use free of charge. The food was fantastic with a wide range of things to choose from and the waiters in the restaurant were very polite and friendly. One of my favourite things about this hotel though, is that you have a view of the sea wherever you are and this is particularly nice while eating your meals. Cavtat is about a ten minute walk away across a quiet street by the sea, and this town has a supermarket, bank and many bars and restaurants. I would recommend taking a boat trip to Dubrovnik one day as there is plenty to see and do there. Overall, the Albatros is a great place to stay if you're going to Cavtat and we had a great holiday there.
