A brilliant walk with amazing views. The wild flowers were amazing and we also saw at least half a dozen snakes, lizards and even a tortoise. Although the memorial is very moving it is such a beautiful viewpoint. The restaurant two thirds of the way up makes a very welcome break for a beer or other refreshment.

I like to do a bit of hiking when at home or abroad and this was the only hike described for the Cavtat area. As the walk is described in detail elsewhere i will give a brief summary of my experience. A pleasant walk for anyone with moderate fitness and a good pair of shoes, much of the trail is over lose rock and gravel so sandles and flip flops are not ideal. Some excellent views in all directions as you progress up the track. Also if you are into wildflowers then there will be plenty for you if you go in early summer. The only gripe i have about this walk is the navigation, the map i got from the tourist office is pretty useless. However the first part of the trail is marked with red and white paint and is relatively easy to follow. The second half of the trail beyond the village has recently been widened for trucks or construction equipment and so the red and white markings are no longer visible. The round trip took me 4 hours.

If you are so inclined, take a long and sometimes challenging walk up to the peak of Mount Stazisce using the Ronald Brown pathway. It is a popular route, the Cavtat Tourist Information office will give you a map showing the start and basic information. However it is best to Google it and print off detailed information of how exactly how to find and follow the pathway. It is very well established and accessible, but pay good attention to the directions as there are two right hand turns to make. Taking the wrong turn will not land you in any trouble but it will add on to the walk time considerably.

The total walk time is between four and five hours. For those who don't want to go up to the paek, you can only up to half way, which is the easy stretch of the trek, and experience wonderful views of Cavtat and the surrounding areas, right up to Old Dubrovnik.
I came across several tourist trekkers during my walk up there, and all are willing to have a good chat (and a rest!). There is no danger in the way of hard climbs or narrow ledges - all perfectly safe. I walked in a good pair of trainers, not ideal but good enough. Incidentally, Ronald Brown, a senior USA politician, was killed on the mountain with 35 others in a plane crash in 1996. There is a monument at the summit marking this event.

Exhilarating feeling whether only going half way or all the way to the summit. Go for it! Do something different when on holiday!
