We leave tomorrow and to be honest could have stayed a few more days, I've read all the reviews up to now and there is a bit of truth in the last two especially the price of drinks etc. This is a good hotel but so not a 5 star. All the staff are friendly and helpful and work very long hours every day, they are at breakfast and still there at 10 pm after dinner, if you converse with them they are more than happy to chat.
Room was good and cleaned every day WiFi worked well at all times, pity there was not more English channels on the TV. We had a sea view room on 1st floor which as great but would be better the higher up you go.
We both enjoyed the food, not the massive choice you get in some hotels but here you can eat all the food. It is of really good quality and varied with Lamb, Beef, Pork, Chicken or Turkey most nights. There is a lovely Spa and 2 salt water swimming pools and the Hotel has amazing views of Cavtat Harbour. There is a pianoist playing each evening who is excellent but may not suit the younger quests, this is a relaxing place to be. As previously mentioned by others water at least should be free at dinner. There is a bugy which takes quests down the hill to the harbour which is a God send please tip the lads who drop you off and pick you up. Overall very pleased to have stayed here I would come back.

Room Tip: High rooms will have better views.

I have just returned from the hotel having chosen to stay here again following a lovely holiday at the same time last year! Unfortunately the weather was not as good as last year but we made the most of the indoor facilities. Indoor pool is heated, although salt water is not to everyone's taste but having stayed in a number of 4/5* hotels over the years I rate the indoor pool and spa facilities as 5* and immaculately clean! excellent pool! steam room, sauna etc - all free of charge - and numerous treatments available at a reasonable charge. Not sure where previous reviewers where staying but my husband and I were in 908 this year and in a similar room on the 8th floor last year. Both rooms were immaculate, and sea views not to be matched in any holiday resort! As in most hotels, double beds are generally made up of 2 singles and can only assume these travellers are comparing rooms/beds to American standards or have very limited travelling experience! Personally, I find the last reviews insulting to the staff and hotel in terms of service and food! I am sure that the contributors have not paid 5* prices for their food or accommodation compared to, for example, London/New York and I generally find quality of produce, particularly freshly prepared fruit including oranges, grapefruit, pineapple etc., as well as an abundance of fresh fruit to help yourself to as top quality! Granted the restaurant can seem busy at times given number of tour operators using the hotel as stop off, however, over the two year period I have found all staff, from cleaning, restaurant, bar and reception nothing more than extremely courteous, respectful, helpful and professional! I have enjoyed some very nice food at the hotel, and some mediocre but put that down to poor choice on my part at any particular sitting as generally the choice is varied but given the cost and close proximity to Cavtat you do have numerous options. I would also question the comments on interior decor etc as hotel is maintained to a high standard and did not experience any issues with regard to decor/maintenance. Hotel Croatia is a charming hotel in a beautiful location and I am already looking forward to planning my next visit!

This hotel has a great location overlooking Cavtat and is only about a 10 minute walk from the town. There are a number of stairs you will need to climb, so you should take that into account. The rooms are nice enough, the staff is helpful and pleasant (there is a staffed concierge desk in addition to the front desk) and 24-hour room service is a plus. I was only here for a night, flying out in the morning by myself. The great thing is that this hotel is less than 10 minutes away from the airport. It makes a huge difference at 6 in the morning! Solid choice for Cavtat, although lacks the charm and romanticism one might prefer for a longer stay with a significant other. The building itself is a bit bland, but for my purposes, it was perfect.

Booked this hotel based on other good reviews. We ignored the reviews about the food and staff and put it down to personal taste. However we've been here a week and the breakfast and dinner is terrible. Please believe the bad reviews about the food. Luke warm, hardly any choice, fish and rice, bacon tastes like rubber etc. We're a couple in our 30s and have stayed in 3 star hotels across Europe and experienced better food. Dining room is like a canteen. Definitely not 4 star and certainly nowhere near 5 star. Staff in dining room walk around with a slapped bottom for a face. Service with a smile?! Staff are Quite abrupt, cold and unwelcoming. Only one or two are pleasant enough. Reception staff are polite but again not overly nice.

Decor of hotel is extremely low class. Throwback from the 80s. Money needs to be invested.

Drinks are extortionate. Please believe the other reviews when they say the drinks are over priced! 26 kuna for a soft drink, 20 kuna for tea!!! It's 10 in the harbour. Drinks are not included at dinner...not even water.

Rooms are not sound proofed. You can hear everything in the next room. Again hotel needs to invest some of the money they make on drinks!!

When weather is bad you can use the indoor pool...If you like cold water! Considering its suppose to be 5 star there is no jacuzzi!

It seems this hotel lacks standard customer service. They haven't put any thought into how to look after or treat guests. Considering how much they charge customers to stay here they seriously need to start in investing money into bringing this hotel up to the 5 star rating they appear to class themselves as. It's a huge complex, a 3 star at its best.

Low spend on food quality = higher profit for the owners.

All in all its a concrete base to explore the surrounding areas. Location and convenience is what you're paying through the nose for. Beautiful setting just the staff, food and general ambience let's this place down...such a shame! Much cheaper hotels around the harbour with better experience from others we've spoken to. If you book this hotel stay bed and breakfast only and don't expect smiles or a warm welcome!

Very disappointed...

They charge 5 star prices for food and drink, and that is the only part off this Hotel that can be called 5 star.

It is a monstrous soviet influenced building which I am told had 750 staff when run by the state many years ago. It now has 100 approx. staff to cater for up to 1000 guests. It was refurbished in the '90s.,after heavy damage during the fighting.
The staff are really nice, but poorly trained, and working under, what appears to be enormous pressure and stress.

My wife and I had booked a double sea view room with a double bed. The double bed was two single beds put together with 2 small single duvet covers which kept falling off during the night We later got a double bed duvet to cover the 2 single beds.

No hot water for showers on three different days, despite letting shower run for 30 mins.,as instructed by staff as the way to get the water to heat.

This "5 star hotel" is really only suitable for large conventions, and package holiday groups at bargain basement prices.

Avoid the "Steak House" at all costs, as it is grossly overpriced and poor.

Whoever is responsible for their "5 star" status, should revisit and downgrade it, if only as a matter of fairness to the travelling public.

There are not nearly enough sun loungers around the pool area, the only one I could find was broken, That was my only visit to the pool.

We were pleased to leave at the end of our 7 days.

I am really sorry to have to write such a report as this, mainy because of the staff of lovely people working so hard, for long hours, trying to do the impossible.

We travelled with a tour operator, who obviously got knock down prices, as the "Rack" rate advertised by the hotel comes straight from "Walter Mitty" land.

Also don't depend on the Wi-Fi as it comes and goes. The reception area is the only place with some consistent service.

They have a golf buggy service to take guests up and down the very steep hill. On the niight of heavy rain they could not operate as road was too slippy. No option but to climb the hill and get drenched.

The poor service was not the fault of the overworked and poorly trained people working for the hotel, who at all times did their best under the impossible demands on them. This Hotel has a 7 month season in which to maximise revenue and profit, so be warned.

Room Tip: Sea View rooms above the 4th. floor are probably best.

The hotel is extremely clean and the room spacious. Breakfast are plentiful. We stayed on half board and there was a lot of choice which was constantly refreshed.
The staff were without exception wonderful, they could not do enough for us from the guys that dropped us in the buggy to the harbour to the hotel manager.
If one night you do not want to use the main restaurant you can exchange this for money off the steak house or one day when we went out we exchanged for a packed lunch
The harbour with plentiful bars and restaurants is a short Walk down some steps or they offer a golf buggy ride if required
The bus to Dubrovnik gets packed and there is a real fight to get on it. You can catch it from the harbour on the hour and half past (high season) 25 kn one way and you can buy on the bus.
It is down a lot of step s to get to the old town and if you don't fancy them on the way back get the water taxi from Dubrovnik harbour to cavtat

Positivies
----------
Spacious, free parking, clean, great sea views, spa facilities, lots of conference rooms, private outside spaces, walking distance to Cavtat town, transport services for elderly to Cavtat, spacious rooms (if 'superior' room), indoor and outdoor salt-water pools, helpful concierge staff.

Negatives
----------
Hit and miss room cleaning services, dated and not fit for purpose gymnasium, low quality food (little variety, very little for vegetarians - even less for vegans, some food overcooked/undercooked, poor presentation and cantine-like ambience), very over-priced food and drink (see tips section for how to beat these), half board option does NOT include any drinks for dinner and they outright refuse to serve tap water (they charge £3 for a 500ml bottle), poor service in dining hall - staff remove plates and cutlery between courses without asking and do not replace them, staff are generally miserable and not warm. No wifi coverage beside swimming pools, no coffee/tea making facilities in room, no ice, in-room air conditioning is centrally controlled rather than individually per room, bed linen is changed every 3 days, TV channels 90% German, no in-room alarm clock/ipod connection, poor room sound-proofing.

Tips
----
Ask for ironing board and iron instead of expensive laundry services.
To avoid paying excessive prices for food, either go all-inclusive or eat in local restaurants/cafes for up to 60% less.
Tap water is perfectly safe to drink and tastes good. Also some of the cleanest in the world!
Hire a car to see Croatia and neighbouring Montenegro. Local transport is infrequent especially on weekends. Taxis taken from major hotels are rip-offs.
If driving towards Split from the south (Dubrovnik) you will pass Bosnian border control points and you MUST have your passport alongside driving license with you.
Dubrovnik and Ston both have great city walls to walk on but Ston has 1km of walls for 40KN per person, whilst Dubrovnik charges 100KN per person for a shorter walk.
Dubrovnik is a tourist trap and gets very congested with tourists in summer. We went early May and it was already very busy.
Local mini market (Pemo) about 10 mins walk away from hotel. Mini market (Tommy) 2km away. Supermarket (Lidl) approx 9km away.
Cavtat (pronounced Tsavtat) town has a few bars and restaurants (mostly fish), great gourmet dining at Bugenvila restaurant (great service and good veggie options too).
