If you are going on holiday to Croatia, go to Dubrovnik. And if you are going to Dubrovnik, stay at the Hotel Croatia, in nearby Cavtat. Here is a list of reasons why. It's easy to get to from the airport, the hotel looks impressive inside and out (we thought it was a bit like a Bond-lair !), the food is always great (go to the steak house at least once !), the beach area in the bay is beautiful, Cavtat is the perfect small coastal town, Cavtat has a carnival in the first week of July, Dubrovnik and the islands are a short(ish) and scenic boat ride away, Bosnia and Montenegro are within easy reach, the staff are super-helpful, the spa is modern and the treatment list is really long (great if you have a rare cloudy day) and the views from the seafront rooms is stunning.

This is a huge hotel, but the location is perfect with wonderful rocky beaches on the backside of the hotel. We had booked a room with seaview and it was absolutely amazing to sit on the balcony and look on sunset, or just the sun shining on the sea, or the moonshine on evenings. Breakfast is perfect, ther is everything you can wish. Just a few thing could be better. Outside swimmingpool area is partly in shadow and very narrow. There is difficult to walk around the pool because of the sunbeds. And the hotels drinks are a lot more expensive as in town.....

Hotel Croatia does not match the description given on the web. The room was dirty and old. The bathroom was in extremely poor condition. There were few sunbeds.
The only thing that was good in the hotel was the spa which was clean, modern and quiet.

Room Tip: If you choose to stay at this hotel say that you do not want to have room 715.

Not the 5 star hotel we expected our bedroom was situated under the leisure club which proved to be very noisy from about 5am till late at night
Position of hotel not ideal as their is over 120 steps down to the sea front area or a very steep hill to walk very tiring at the end of the day.Good selection of food available if you like serve yourself buffet style, miserable dining room staff must learn how to smile and make you feel welcome Overall rating of hotel mediocre compared to other 5 star rated hotels I have stayed at we would not return

Dear Rodney S
Thank you very much for sharing your opinion regarding hotel Croatia with Trip Advisor.
It is corect that Hotel Croatia is located on the hill, as well that there are many stairs, but in our offer there is buggy transport free of charge. We feel very sorry that you weren't happy with food in the main restaurant and with staff attitude.
Thank you once again for your comments, and we hope that you will give us another opportunity to welcome you to exceed your expectations.
With best regards,

Currently staying at the Hotel Croatia. Whilst it might not be the prettiest building when viewed from the water, it ticks all the boxes. Beautiful location, selection of reaturants-the steak house is our favorite, variety of places to swim, helpful staff, no long transfer from the airport. Me and my partner love food and have got to say, the buffet included in half board is one of the best we've experienced-caters for just about every taste. Tonight I'm trying out the energy clinic. Cavtat itself is also fantastic, great bars/food/ picturesque/ you don't get hassled into buying things as I've experienced in other countries. Oh, and the golf buggies are a huge bonus if you've exhausted yourself exploring!!

The hotel is very large but in consequence offers a lot of facilities; it occupies a position on the top of a pine covered peninsular overlooking the very pretty harbour of Cavtat. The views are spectacular from both sides of the peninsular, one side affording uninterrupted views of the Adriatic Sea and its off shore islands, the other of Cavtat.

Most of the bedrooms are on the sea side, the sunsets are amazing and the rooms modern, clean and comfortable, the beds being particularly comfortable. Towels were changed on a daily basis and the bedding once during our week long stay. Our sea view room was on the second floor, which did have a sea view partially obscured by pine trees and cacti, we did not mind this but others may. There is a mini bar and safe, plus plenty of hanging space in the wardrobe, hotel soap and shampoos were replaced as needed. The hair dryer was very poor, take your own. The cleaners were very friendly and helpful, we found this to be the case with all of the staff.

We had a couple of dull, warm days but we were still able to eat outside on the terrace which made the most of the fabulous views of Cavtat. We had Half Board and found the food at dinner to be plentiful with a good choice, however, it could have been presented with more flair and imagination; on the whole we enjoyed it.Breakfast was very good with lots of cheeses, meats, salads, cooked options, fresh fruit, the bread was especially good and the setting glorious.

The hotel offers three areas where you can swim and sunbathe; the pool area has plenty of comfortable sunbeds with foam pads; towels are available every day free of charge; the Spinnaker bar and restaurant faces Cavtat across the bay, we sunbathed here on several occasions, highly recommended for the views and sea breezes; there is a roped off area for swimming in the Adriatic. The food is reasonably priced and the drinks are what you would expect to pay in a 4 star hotel in the Uk. It is cheaper in Cavtat. The third area is on the other side of the peninsular, steep steps lead down from the pool, it is rocky with designated areas for sitting in comfortable chairs. There is a small snack bar and access to the sea. Not for the infirm! Contrary to the previous review we found there to be plenty of sunbeds , there are so many areas to choose from there were always some available, of course you do get the usual towel on chair brigade, but even so there was no problem.
We did a boat trip to Dubrovnik which is a must, a beautiful city, very busy but vey enjoyable. We booked the trip from one of the guys in Cavtat, it was very reasonably priced ,took about 50 minutes and dropped us off in the harbour in the old town. Ideal. We also enjoyed walking round the peninsular on the other side of the harbour into another small bay and Marina, on another day we walked further round into the next bay. We enjoyed an ice cold beer and frothy coffee in one of the small restaurants on the walk back, again the views are stunning.
Overall, the hotel is very good,if not quite 5 star and I would certainly stay there again. The only real draw back is its asset which is its position, offering fantastic views but at the same time needing to climb 127 steps ( yes we did count them!) or negotiate a very steep hill to get up to it! We consider ourselves to be fairly fit, but it was a challenge, especially two or three times a day! However, the hotel will on request, transport you up and down in one of three buggies it has for the purpose. Just ring reception and they will send one down. So really not a problem.

Whilst we were there the hotel hosted a conference for a few days, this took place on the same floor as the swimming pool; it felt rather uncomfortable to be wandering about in a sarong and swimming costume amongst collars and ties and high heels and chic dresses, they also joined us for breakfast. A strange mix of business and pleasure, the hotel felt much more relaxed when they packed up their lap tops and left.

The only real gripe we had was about wi fi access, we found we could only get it in the reception area and the piano bar. We asked a couple of times about this at reception as we were under the impression it would be available in our room, they said they would look into it, but nothing happened.

We had a really good holiday in a very well run, clean, comfortable hotel. The area is very beautiful, the people very friendly and I would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: A sea view room on a higher floor

Just returned from a 10 day stay. My first disappointment was that we had paid extra for a sea view. This was partly obscured by foliage, we were in room 204. When we asked to be moved to a higher floor we were told hotel was full.

That first night was pouring down and England was playing in the World Cup. My hsband decided to watch on the television in the quiet saloon. He was shocked to be charged 48 kuna for a beer. He decided to brave the weather and go into town, in a bar there he paid 20 kuna, less than half of the hotel charges. We thought it outrageous. Yes you expect hotels to be dearer than local bars but that is a difference that cannot be justified.

The breakfasts were very good with lots of choices. We were bed & breakfast and so ate in a few of the restaurants in town. We found that most were offering similar menus and unless you had pasta meals it was french fries with everything and the prices not much less than back home. We normally go half board and we wished we had on this holiday because one thing I missed was vegetables, Do they not eat vegetables in Croatia?

Had a number of boat trips which were enjoyable and offered a bit of a breeze in the very hot weather. Went to Dubrovnik twice doing cable car & Old Town, both times using local no 10 bus.

On the last day did a coach trip to Ston & Trsteno which included a visit to a family house to learn about olive oil, including tasting rose brandy & cheese platter. Ston to see salt plains then back to Trsteno visiting an aberetum. Very varied day and worth the 31 kunas each.

On the whole an enjoyable holiday

Room Tip: When you book ask for a sea view on a high floor
