“Very enjoyable stay.”
Reviewed 23 August 2014

We booked this holiday through Thompsons and it was my wife's choice Croatia (hotel & country) and I congratulate her judgement. Southern Croatia is a fabulous place for a holiday and whilst beaches are few and far between the Hotel Croatia has a rock terrace that is handy for bathing in the Adriatic (take a mask and snorkel).
As for the hotel - we booked a sea view room and I would recommend this as the views over the sea and and watching the marine traffic was enjoyable. Room and maid service where excellent and it was nice to have a large hotel that provides the safe without any surcharge - the mini bar was also reasonably priced. We were on half board and breakfasts were the usual 'euro-buffet' but served on the dining room terrace they were made special by the view over the small harbour in Cavtat ( could not figure out why some guests chose to eat inside !!). Evening meal was again buffet style and while no cordon bleu treats there was always something tasty to be enjoyed and a wide choice. Overview the hotel while big and busy never seemed crowded and suited our preference of finding privacy in a crowd ( does that make sense?). Cavtat is a charming little town and close for the hotel as are the links to Dubrovnik by bus our boat . Evenings on the harbour side taking in the atmosphere and admiring the fancy boats of the toffs was a good and preferable experience to the more commercialised places you find elsewhere around the Med .
Staff were always helpful and friendly and in this part of Croatia the use of English is widespread and very accomplished. I would happily return and readily recommend it to other members.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view.

Wonderful location with lovely staff. Food is good from the buffet, lunch and a la carte. Rooms are also very clean and of a good standard.
Communication, however, needs to improve. We've had many occasions when a planned event has changed and no notice was given.

The hotel is large with a lot of amenities and large rooms but all somewhat soul-less. It's lacking in charm for the most part though the lounge and some of the restaurants do have very nice views of the water and opposing city.

The person at the customer service desk was very pleasant and helpful with restaurant information but unfortunately the buffet at the Spinnaker restaurant was well below standard. The food was very bland, dry, land luke warm (in some cases even cold). The best selection at the buffet, believe it or not, was the baked beans but they only had a little left and when we inquired about replenishing the tray they told us they would not make anymore. It was a little on the late side, but others were seated after us, and we paid full price for what should have been a full buffet. When we advised someone who appeared to be a manager they shrugged and offered a free drink, which we declined. They should have taken something off the bill.

The worst part of the experience, was the next morning, when we were checking out very early for a flight. The front desk person would not accept a large bill as payment for the incidentals we had on the invoice and was condescending when I questioned him as to why such a large hotel could not make change for a cash payment. Then he said our driver, arranged by the hotel, had just left. When I asked why and when he was coming back he said our reservation was at the top of the hour so we were early and should wait. It was perhaps 10 minutes before so I was very concerned that the driver was not going to be back in time - and I was right. The manager disappeared and despite my calling out to him behind the desk, and using the phone over and over, he did not respond. I was getting frantic as we had no way to get to the airport, the front lobby was effectively, vacant, and we did not want to miss our flight home. Finally the driver showed up 10 to 15 minutes late but it was an unprofessional experience not to have someone at the front desk for all of that time. I suspect he was hiding as he messed up and sent the driver off by mistake.

I would not stay here again.

I am so glad we stayed here and not in a busy large town/city. Cavtat is such ha lovely place to stay and not at all raucous. We are in your fifties and were probably the younger age set of people who stayed here. There were boat trips to Dubrovnik and you could easily catch a bus from the station in Cavtat and it took about 20 minutes. Definitely do the walls walk. What a superb highlight. We booked trips with the hotel to Mostar ( ok but a bit depressing) and also Montenegro which had stunning views and lovely towns).
We stayed at the hotel Croatia in May and were one of the younger people staying there but that was ok. In the summer there is a nightclub but this was not open in May. Instead there was a lovely old man who actually lived in themhotel and played a very broad range of music from the 40s to about the 70s. This suited the clientele and was very relaxing. He was a very dignified gent.
The hotel was very clean. The staff were all very friendly. The views were fabulous and the grounds were wonderful. They did extremely well to cater for such a large amount of people in the restaurant but it was not fabulous. It was still good quality though. We ate in the steak place which was a nice change and there are some lovely places in town.

What stood out? The exhibition of war photography in Dubrovnik. The beautiful mausoleum in Cavtat and wonderful walks around this pretty town. The hotel was very dignified and relaxing and I would definitely recommend it. The Croatian people are very friendly. I also loved the swallows swooping around outside our room especially as the sun was setting.
Wonderful holiday.

Room Tip: Get a sea view.

We stayed at a local hotel linked to hotel Croatia and was advised we could use the facilities here. We decided to go for a swim in the pool one day and was taken aback at how SMALL the pool was compared to the vast hotel. As for the pool, well. Shocking! It was MORE SALTY than the dead sea! It was foul, it stung the eyes, it tasted disgusting and, I kid you not, you could float on top! I have never EVER been in a hotel pool that's as terrible as this. There was no sunbeds so people were laid all over the place. The kids were all fed up because none of them wanted to swim causing grief for all the parents!

Everything else looked swanky and the staff right enough, so 2 stars. If I had stayed here I would've been gutted.

We just wanted to chill out in the middle of a long driving tour of the Western Balkans and to be near Dubrovnik. This hotel is cavernous but has pools, sea access, lots of restaurants. Ideal for a family holiday. Breakfast super choices. Friendly staff. We would return for a long weekend break as airport quite close. NB. If you want an intimate hotel, which we normally do, this is not it. Suited us perfectly this time

Hotel Croatia is a nice hotel with many things working for it. The rooms are reasonably sized, feel fresh and new, and the cleaning is without fault. If you pay for a room with a sea view, it really is an astounding view.

The hotel has one outdoor pool, one indoor, and two spots where you can go swim in the ocean. We spent no time at either of the pools, but I'm sure if you have kids, you'll prefer to stay there. Both of the hotel's sea spots have very deep waters, so leaving little kids there is out of the question.

Lovely staff in the reception (the biggest reception area we have ever seen), and they were very quick to help when our safety box in the room broke. Also great to help with restaurant bookings.

We didn't try all the restaurants at the hotel, but Steak House was nice, though a little pricy.

On the negative side:

- Rude and absent personnel by the beach. One day down at the ocean, we wanted a sun parasoll - and were told that it was too windy. It was barely 1 m/s winds, but no one got a parasoll. The person handing them (and the towels) out was very snotty about it, and told me that he "didn't want to explain more". Also, when we wanted towels (which were in a locked room), the person handing them out was absent half the time, often to be found talking to friends.

- Also on the note of sunbeds and the like - there were way too few. Not enough sunbeds, especially since the rule about not being allowed to "book" sunbeds wasn't followed by anyone, so by eleven every sunbed was taken. Also, not nearly enough parasols, at most 1 per every 4 sunbeds.

- If you have problems with stairs, this probably isn't the hotel for you. There are a whole bunch of stairs going down to the seaside or to Cavtat city. There are hotel golf cars going up and down to take people, but that probably gets old pretty quickly.

- The breakfast buffet. Probably depends on what kind of breakfast buffet you're used to, but we weren't impressed with this one.

Mostly, Hotel Croatia is a great hotel. Good rooms, mostly good service, and a great view. Cavtat is a lovely little town with several good restaurants (don't miss out on Bugenvila!) and a nice atmosphere, very calm compared to for example Dubrovnik. Still, it's not a problem getting from Cavtat to Dubrovnik or any of the islands outside the coast.

We would most likely stay at Hotel Croatia again if we return to Croatia.
