I have to admit that Hvar in general appeared to be a very image concious, facile catwalk of a place where the yachting set and sun worshippers compete to look cool in designer gear - the gorgeous Venetian buildings appear something of a backdrop in a hedonistic resort.
This all goes to make this Monastery stand out. Located on a small headland adjacent to the resort it is a very picturesque sight from afar.
The interior is suitably austere in parts - but the highlight is a large last supper (A wall painting with some history). The courtyard is a delightfully relaxing haven - complete with it's ancient tree.
The courtyard outside the front of the monestary provides a shady place to shelter from the sun in the shade of some trees and watch the world in all it's finery wander bye.

I would combine this with the concerts. There ware regularly some lovely jazz evenings or other musicians playing and it is a lovely spot. It is outdoors in the courtyard. You also get to walk about the monastery a little before and after the concert.

Pretty crazy in a place that lives and dies by tourism, but keeper of this place was MIA first day we tried to get in, even after our guide called him and we waited unsuccessfully for his arrival...tried again second day, and, again, had to wait...saw him, after our guide pointed him out, sauntering at a snail's pace to open up the museum...was rather shocked at his cavalier attitude...was it worth it, it was interesting, and certainly so for Hvar. The Last Supper painting in the monks' "dining/social" hall is most interesting, and there are additionally 2 rooms of art, one with traditional and one modern, all OK, nothing to bowl you over. The architecture is interesting (concerts held in interior courtyard which features a well to catch rain) and the building is situated in a lovely spot...the exterior courtyard has a 500-year-old cypress which is pretty amazing. Not heavy lifting to go, but wouldn't wait unduly.

This is a vibrant back packer and high end yacth town and so sadly this monastery is a bit neglected. To pay to get in yet very little to see is sad.

What a lovely place and we caught a concert here by some local folk group under a full moon and starlit sky.A memory to treasure and all for under €10 euro a head. The setting is wonderful and the stone work is heavenly.
