“Great Location, Great Place to Relax”
Reviewed 8 October 2013

When discussing where to take a brief holiday from our work in the Middle East, we decided upon Croatia. It was a place where we had never visited in Europe, but looked beautiful and peaceful, which was exactly what we were looking for, as it is neither beautiful--nor peaceful--where we live.

The next question was "Where in Croatia?" We decided on a place that had easy access to beaches, and Hvar came up as one of the best options. Because we were taking our holiday at end of the summer/beginning of autumn, we needed a place where we could relax, even if the weather didn't cooperate. Hvar is known for having more sunny days than any other place in that part of the Mediterranean. We were fortunate to have a lot of sun for 4 of our 7 days, and the temps were perfect for spending a few hours on the nearby beaches, a number of which are within walking distance (the closest about 10 minutes away, but others an easy walk about 30 minutes away). The staff know all of the places to go, and are very helpful in drawing easy maps to use so you don't feel like you are lost.

We also were able to take a water taxi to another island for a day, and spend time at a couple of the beaches there. Being that we were in Hvar the beginning of October, the beaches were nearly empty, but the restaurants and other services were still open while we were there.

The family that owns and runs Villa Fio were very friendly, and had great input when we had questions about restaurants, good beaches and other activities. We were also very pleased with the quality of the room cleaning every day while we were out exploring.

We had a kitchenette with a large fridge and microwave, which we used for both breakfast and lunches. There is a small grocery store a short walk away, and we were able to purchase everything we needed from that shop. There are also some bakeries and another larger grocery near the city center, which we would recommend.

It rained on and off the last two days we were in Hvar, but it was fine because we were there to rest and relax before heading back to the 'real world'. The room comes equipped with a new LCD television and satellite hookup. We also had good wireless internet, and were able to stream some movies and shows during the rainy times when we were in the room.

We intentionally avoided high season on Hvar, and are glad that we did. I think we had the best timeframe, where everything is still open, but the weather was no longer hot. Each day was around 70', which is perfect. But, we are also glad that we didn't wait another week. Many of the restaurants and other services close around the second week in October. (BTW, if you love thin-crust Italian (real Italian) pizza, then Hvar is a great place to get the real thing.)

So, to finish up, we recommend Villa Fio as a great option if you will be staying on Hvar, and using it as a base to explore other towns on the island, as well as visiting other closeby islands.

Room Tip: Our room was on the south side of the building, so we had a nice view of the ocean and other islands...

I was totally impressed with Villa Fio and the service we received.

We were collected on arrival and dropped off as we left from the bus station by Antonia, who was lovely and very welcoming. We were given refreshments and Croatian cake as we checked in, which was a nice touch. Antonia was extremely friendly and informative, much more so than I have experienced elsewhere. She was very helpful, providing us with maps, recommendations and making restaurant reservations for us.

Our apartment was fantastic. It was large, spacious and modern with a great balcony overlooking the town. It was cleaned daily and the standard was very high. Fresh towels were also provided each day.

Other extras such as the book exchange and umbrellas to borrow, all make it feel very homely. Antonia gave us warm cake one morning she saw us, which was another nice treat! Antonia and her parents obviously put a lot of thought into Villa Fio.

The location is great for the nicest beach in town! It is a few minutes walk down a rocky path. The town is about a 15 minute walk away on gentle hills, but after all lovely food in Hvar each night we did not mind this!

I cannot recommend these apartments highly enough.

Room Tip: As for a room with a balcony at the front so you overlook the town and the harbour.

We had a wonderful time staying at Villa Fio and would thoroughly recommend to anyone visiting Hvar. We stayed in the sunset apartment, and had a choice of 2 great balconies to watch the sunset from, it did not disappoint. Antonia was a brilliant host, extremely helpful and friendly. If we come back to Hvar, we would be sure to stay here again.

Staff, environs, rooms, amenities, everything - perfect. The only imperfect thing was a barking dog at 4 AM which wasn't any fault of Marija and her family, but it could be a pain for you if you sleep lightly like my wife.

Really nothing but good things to say like the title says ... stay here!

Room Tip: Go high or go home :-)

What a find!!! I don't know what else to say about this place apart from... Perfect! We could honestly not have asked for more from our accommodation, and the family could not have been more lovely, they picked us up when we arrived off the ferry, recommended and booked restaurants, helped us out with travel and logistics and were just so smiley the whole time, they were so incredibly welcoming it was almost like having a second family. We loved being slightly out of town, it's a pleasurable walk, not too strenuous at all and the views are so pretty from the top of the town. Also, you're next to a fantastic beach, much nicer than the city beaches. Theres a supermarket a short stroll away with breads, fruits, a deli counter etc for all your breakfast/ lunch needs. The room was spotless- you could literally have eaten off the floor it was that clean and our terrace was a little sun trap. I would highly recommend this to all of my friends and family and we considered booking up for October when we were there only to find out they're unfortunately fully booked! Fantastic place, fantastic holiday :-)

I can sum up Villa Fio in one word - perfect! We stayed in the Sunset apartment which had breathtaking views over the whole of Hvar town. The apartment was cleaned every day and was constantly spotless - it also contained everything we needed; cooking equipment, clean towels, comfy bed, TV etc. We wanted for nothing. And the people - Marija and her family were so friendly and helpful; they went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. They booked restaurants for us, picked us up and dropped us off, they even ran out and bought us an adapter upon learning that we'd forgotten ours!

A couple of the other reviews have mentioned the distance from the main town - this wasn't a problem for us, we found the walk quite pleasant and more than worth it for the views we got in return.

I couldn't recommend Villa Fio more - and I'm sure we'll be back.

Room Tip: The Sunset apartment has the best views.
