When discussing where to take a brief holiday from our work in the Middle East, we decided upon Croatia. It was a place where we had never visited in Europe, but looked beautiful and peaceful, which was exactly what we were looking for, as it is neither beautiful--nor peaceful--where we live.
The next question was "Where in Croatia?" We decided on a place that had easy access to beaches, and Hvar came up as one of the best options. Because we were taking our holiday at end of the summer/beginning of autumn, we needed a place where we could relax, even if the weather didn't cooperate. Hvar is known for having more sunny days than any other place in that part of the Mediterranean. We were fortunate to have a lot of sun for 4 of our 7 days, and the temps were perfect for spending a few hours on the nearby beaches, a number of which are within walking distance (the closest about 10 minutes away, but others an easy walk about 30 minutes away). The staff know all of the places to go, and are very helpful in drawing easy maps to use so you don't feel like you are lost.
We also were able to take a water taxi to another island for a day, and spend time at a couple of the beaches there. Being that we were in Hvar the beginning of October, the beaches were nearly empty, but the restaurants and other services were still open while we were there.
The family that owns and runs Villa Fio were very friendly, and had great input when we had questions about restaurants, good beaches and other activities. We were also very pleased with the quality of the room cleaning every day while we were out exploring.
We had a kitchenette with a large fridge and microwave, which we used for both breakfast and lunches. There is a small grocery store a short walk away, and we were able to purchase everything we needed from that shop. There are also some bakeries and another larger grocery near the city center, which we would recommend.
It rained on and off the last two days we were in Hvar, but it was fine because we were there to rest and relax before heading back to the 'real world'. The room comes equipped with a new LCD television and satellite hookup. We also had good wireless internet, and were able to stream some movies and shows during the rainy times when we were in the room.
We intentionally avoided high season on Hvar, and are glad that we did. I think we had the best timeframe, where everything is still open, but the weather was no longer hot. Each day was around 70', which is perfect. But, we are also glad that we didn't wait another week. Many of the restaurants and other services close around the second week in October. (BTW, if you love thin-crust Italian (real Italian) pizza, then Hvar is a great place to get the real thing.)
So, to finish up, we recommend Villa Fio as a great option if you will be staying on Hvar, and using it as a base to explore other towns on the island, as well as visiting other closeby islands.
