Everyone knows by now that the rooms need updating and airco, and that there is a parking issue with beach visitors; I'm sure the management is aware and it will be dealt with in due time - there were already surveyors in and out of the building while we were there. So the for the core business: the rooms are still clean and comfortable with a spacious balcony; the breakfast and dinner buffets are copious, varied and of good quality: you don't have to queue and if you get tired with something, you eat something else.
The staff are wonderful, nice and polite - even with the toughest of customers - and always helpful. There are great sports and leisure facilities - we almost had the whole tennis centre to ourselves, and the tennis manager Amedeo was very outgoing.
The walk to the old town is ONLY and exactly 10 mins. and does NOT go through a derelict industrial area, but past a historic railway building (if you care to read the signs) and one of the best seaside restaurants (Hrast - offering a nice change from the complimentary buffet). Very recommendable.

Room Tip: Get a room on the northeast top floor, looking out over the car park and partial seaside (#555). Sin...

I was going back and forth on whether to rate this hotel a 2 or 3. I chose a three because based on other reviews I pretty much knew what to expect. We primarily chose this hotel because of location, free parking and free wifi.

I'll start with the good. The complimentary breakfast and dinner were a huge plus and pretty good too. The pool is nice and the beach is outstanding. I also enjoyed the walk to old town, very nice.

The bad: The parking situation is a horror. It's free but this hotel lets anybody going to the beach park there as well and I had to park far away. There was mold in the bathroom. The lobby is extremely noisy and wifi is so so. The room was hot but that's to be expected in a lot of European hotels since there are many without air conditioning. However, I asked if there was a fan available and there was (for a price) that should be free, in my opinion.

So my suggestions would be to spend some extra cash and update the rooms. Have some parking spaces available ONLY to guests. Fix the wifi problem so you don't have to hear kids running around screaming at the top of their lungs and constantly connecting and reconnecting. There are a lot of empty areas that are very creepy. A paint job would help. It still has the feeling of the old Yugoslavian days and a complete renovation could turn this hotel into a top notch resort! Despite it all, I would probably return.

Had a lovely 5 days in Porec at the Hotel Pical.

Yes - the exterior is a little concrete, the rooms are basic and the hallways need a paint job but on the whole it's a nice place to stay.

The staff are friendly and polite. We especially found that the staff in the restaurant were most helpful and efficient.

The food was good, plenty of choice including salads, meat, fish, pasta and pizza, The house white wine was quite nice, and reasonably priced. Breakfast was also good with fruit, eggs, meat, cheese, bread and pastries being available.

We didn't use the pool area, instead opting for the beach and the sea and we arranged our own trips and excursions when we were there. We did hire bikes though which were good value and quality.

Porec musts are the Basilica, Vinoteka Bacchus for truffle cheese and wine and Comitium for cocktails and live music.

I would certainly return.

Room Tip: Try and get a sea view room If you are a carnivore and like your red meat, go to dinner early as on...

Stayed from 8th to 18th June and had a really good time. Yes, bits of paintwork in bedrooms/balcony do need attention but its nothing major. Bedrooms are basic yet comfortable and very clean. We requested a higher floor room (as a previous reviewer had recommended),and got 530 which had fantastic views over the bay. The public areas are well kept and spacious. The restaurant is light and airy and we never experienced trouble getting a table. Food was a good quality with plenty of choice. Drinks a reasonable price - on a par with the area- with a good house wine £9 a bottle. Staff, especially in restaurant/lounge, were very pleasant and helpful. Pool area very good and well maintained. On our first week the live music was in the lounge but this moved to the beach area in second week as the season was starting. The is worth its 3* rating. We hired bikes on 2 days, well worth it as the coastline is beautiful, cycle map from tourist info in Porec. Can recommend visiting the Basilica in Porec, also trip to caves at Postojna and horses at Lipica. All in all a very good holiday. The only downside for us was the lack of air conditioning in the hotel bedrooms as the temperatures day and night were high.

Room Tip: 4th and 5th floors for the views

We stayed from the 21st May to 4th June and we were disappointed. The rooms were OK but the window and door to the balcony had paint peeling off it and the door did not fit making it very draughty. The weather was not very good, it rained a couple of days and it was cold especially in the room. The bath is very small with very high sides so it is difficult to get in and out.
The food was not as good as before and in quite a small area. There were several coaches of people in at one time which made it very difficult to get to the food. The desserts were very boring and not very good. Rice, semolina or fruit in small glasses, tiny pieces of gateau and ice cream every day. Breakfast was good.
We paid for a safe which is in a locked room behind reception. They are more like lockers than safes. The reception staff just gave you the key without checking you had a safe and when we went there one night and asked for the key they said someone was already in the room, when we looked there was no-one there but the door was open with the key in the lock - not very good security.
We went to Rovinj for the day which was really nice and also the trip to Kastav and Opatija which was very good with a very nice guide. In Opatija you can go in the hotels (we went to the one with Cafe Wagner) and have coffee and cake for about £8. We went with Thomson as their trips are the same as in the town.
We love Croatia and have been there 6 times, the last time we stayed at the Pical was 2010 but we would not stay there again.
If you want nice coffee and gorgeous cakes in Porec go the The Cafe del Mar it is very reasonable and the Peach Bellini was heaven.

The moment our bus arrived at the Hotel Pical I was disappointed. This hotel certainly doesn’t match up to a 3* Thomson Hotel and I am surprised that Thomson has chosen to represent it. Previous reviews of this hotel have stated that it needs a lick of paint however, in my opinion it needs knocking down and completely rebuilding. The reviews which depict the hotel as a prison are not wrong, I was surprised that we weren’t given orange jumpsuits instead of a key when we arrived. Apparently the service of the friendly staff and the award winning food is supposed to make up for disappointing first impressions however I did not experience either of these.
Upon our arrival the receptionist greeted us extremely abruptly with “your room isn’t ready” as opposed to a friendly “Hello and welcome to the Hotel Pical”. Unfortunately this tone and attitude continued throughout our stay. What’s more the food which has been given rave reviews was terribly disappointing. Yes, there was plenty of it but the quality certainly didn’t match up to its quantity. What’s more the restaurant itself has the atmosphere of a cattle feeding shed with the attitude of staff being: get them in and get them out as soon as possible, thus making it a most unpleasant dining experience. Also, as drinks were not included in our holiday package it was necessary to buy a beverage with dinner as staff refused to give us a jug of tap water.
With a 3* hotel I am not expecting Claridge’s however wherever I go I do expect certain standards of service. Unfortunately the Hotel Pical failed miserably in this category and quite frankly I couldn’t wait to escape the atmosphere of the hotel. If you fancy staying in a concrete block which is noisy, has terrible food and appalling service then the Hotel Pical is for you. I however certainly won’t be reoffending and repeating my stay in the Pical Prison.

We had read the reviews before we went so knew what to expect. It's a concrete building with tired looking rooms, we had an old TV with a remote control held together with tape. We went in early May and the hotel had lots of guests but no queuing for food, although I could see this would be a problem in the high season. Although the rooms were tired the public areas had been revamped, bar, reception, dining area, pool. The whole place was waiting for the season to begin proper in June, many of the souvenir places out of the town centre were shut, the hotel's children pool was not in use. The brochure mentioned an internet café, which was one computer which was broken, when asked about a repair we were told it had been broken a long time and there were no plans to have it repaired. We enjoyed the pool, which is set out in proper swimming lanes. We stayed in the main block and we had requested a quite room and it was quite so we had a good nights sleep every night, even though the live music in the hotel was very loud.
The stroll into Porec (pronounced Porridge) was OK, short walk through the industrial area does spoil it somewhat, mainly a coach repair garage and a waste disposal centre. There were 95% Germans in the hotel and in Porec itself. The other 5% being Austrian, Swiss, French, and English. The Germans do not have an aperitif before dinner and we were the only ones in the bar, however after dinner the bar was packed. Prices in the bar were quite expensive and you pay top dollar for local plonk. There are lots and lots of tennis players as there are continual local tournaments.
You can walk along the coast northwards, the Pical side, for miles, past other hotels and camp sites. The same on the south side and we found the south side a much better area and I would recommend a hotel in this area. There are lots of people on bikes as well as pedestrians, mothers with pushchairs, the occasional moped and a tourist train. All these on a small paved track about 6 foot wide and I'm sure this would be a health and safety issue in the UK.
We went across to Fortuna on the island, which seemed to have a lot more English guests and I would recommend a visit to get a different view of the town.
All in all we enjoyed our holiday, the staff were friendly and helpful and as long as you know what to expect you should not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Live music almost every night so ask for a quite room.
