Five friends spent a fantastic week at the Istra in September - the weather was perfect, even the sea was warm for swimming. The hourly ferry over to the island works well although, as other reviewers have commented, we would have been quite happy to stay on the island. It was a pleasure to walk around the two islands and watch the variety of boats going past. Also, it was a treat to get up early in the morning to walk up to the mausoleum (folly) on the adjoining island and feed the pheasants (with bread bought in Rovinj the previous evening). It was just so peaceful although there were still a lot of visitors at the hotel. Our rooms were on the third floor above the indoor pool and overlooking the outdoor pools and the istrian coastline. We were lucky with an ironing room complete with steam iron and trouser press close by, together with a lift down to the Wellness Centre and indoor pool with jacuzzi. The beds were really comfortable with nice large pillows. Plenty of storage space in the bedrooms and a free digital safe, which wasn't working when we first arrived but it was repaired within five minutes of reporting it to reception. The minibar/fridge in the room was useful for keeping milk and bottled water in. There are no tea making facilities in the room, so take your own kettle if you like an early cuppa! The restaurant does get noisy and busy but we were half board and found if we timed breakfast and dinner right, there was very little queuing and the waiters tended to keep us a large table as we were a group. The food was plentiful, beautifully cooked and always a good selection of meat, fish and veggie dishes. Also, there were always plenty of nice cooked veg which is rare in many hotels abroad. The wine, beer and soft drinks were very acceptable with the evening meal. Both morning and night there was a good selection of fruit - bananas, pears, peaches, plums and lots of melon.
We caught the local bus to Pula - which was well worth the visit, with lots to see in the old part of town. We also walked through the "Botanical gardens" past the Park and Eden Hotel in Rovinj. More of a park than gardens, but a lovely walk with a nice bar to stop at for a drink and to look over at the Istra Hotel, together with plenty of little bathing spots.
Altogether a wonderful hotel on a picturesque island overlooking the stunning town of Rovinj.
I will be back - already booked for next summer.

Just returned from this lovely hotel, it is spotlessly clean with every facility one would want. Totally
peaceful, pleasant helpful staff and a setting which is second to none. The boat trip to Rovinj was
a relaxing way to start a visit to the town, although, I would have been quite happy to stay on the island! A stroll over to the smaller island is a delight, with a charming restaurant to visit for lunch.
Will we return? I certainly hope so.

We have just returned from a 10 day trip to the Hotel Istra (13-22 September 2011) and had a lovely holiday. The hotel is in a fantastic location and our room was on the 1st floor. We were very happy with our room and the view which overlooked the swimming pools and the Istrian coastline.

Everywhere in this hotel is kept spotless. Housekeeping is excellent. Rooms are cleaned daily and towels and bed linen changed regularly. There are complimentary toiletries and a box of tissues in the bathroom.

Although we booked a room with a double bed we were given a room which had twin beds. The beds were excellent - very comfortable and there is a choice of pillows.

The digital safe is free as is the air conditioning. There is a mini bar but we did not use it – just took all the bottles out and used it as a fridge to store our own drinks in.

Unfortunately tea/coffee making facilities are not available in the rooms.

Not all the rooms have a sea view. Some of the rooms are overlooking the tennis courts.
We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis but we did try the restaurant twice whilst there. The food was quite good but it does get very noisy and busy. The food was hot and several dishes to choose from although there was some quirky food as well! Wine, beer and soft drinks are free with dinner.

We both really enjoyed the breakfasts as the choice of fruit (bananas, apples, peaches, plums, grapes etc.) was fresh and plentiful. Chef will also cook fried eggs or omelettes to your liking. Great choice for breakfast.

The town of Rovinj is about 15 minutes by boat. It’s a very pretty town and every time we went there we discovered different shops. Do be careful if you decide to visit the Church as the cobbled streets can be very slippery (no high heels ladies) best to wear flat shoes or trainers!
The boat service from the hotel is prompt over to Rovinj and takes about 15-20 minutes. We went over to Rovinj almost every night as the choice of restaurants is excellent. Also the shops are open quite late during the evenings.

Highly recommended is the “Scuba” restaurant it’s spotlessly clean and if you love fish then this place is for you! I had scampi there and it was delicious. My hubby had steak and it was cooked perfect. Reasonably priced too. The Scuba restaurant is located just past the Adriatic Hotel in the main square – very easy to find.

On Thursday there was a wine festival going on in the main square of Rovinj which was lovely – a good time was had by all!! Loads of people and a great atmosphere. On Friday there was a live group in the square and that was good also.

To sum up, we both had a fantastic holiday – there is always somewhere quiet to sunbathe either in the gardens which are adjacent to the swimming pools or you can walk across to the island which is opposite the hotel which can be reached by a causeway. This island is uninhabited but is lovely to walk around (takes about 20 mins) and you will see pheasants and other small wildlife there. There is a small coffee bar there as well. It’s well worth visiting.

We both highly recommend this hotel and look forward to going again sometime soon.

Enjoy

We have recently had a wonderful week at the Hotel Istra and the quality of the hotel allied to the idyllic island location close to a beautiful town, makes this an ideal all round holiday. Waking up in the morning with great views of the Istrian coastline is not a bad start to the day! The hotel facilities are excellent and the buffet choice was good and catered for everybody. Yes, there were some quirky vegetable offerings at breakfast ! but there were more than enough options to choose from and I thought that there was a good variety of dinner choice across the week. The staff were friendly and helpful and I would say that this hotel is equally suitable for both families and couples, which is not always easy to find. Rovinj being only 15 minutes away on the boat is ideal and it was good to be able to spend some of the days exploring the town in the mornings and then hop back on the boat after lunch to spend time around the hotel pools. We have two young children and only went for one week so we didn't venture outside Rovinj on this occasion but for those who do want to explore , there are wide ranging trips available to see more of Croatia and it is also in close proximity to Venice and Slovenia so these trips are also available. Overall a brilliant holiday for all of us. Whilst we would like to return to some places that we have been, we would not normally want to ever stay at the same hotel again but I think that the Hotel Istra is an exception and we would love to stop there again one day.

We booked a holiday in Rovinj following a recommendation from a friend but we selected Hotel Rovinj from the reviews on tripadvisor and overall we were really pleased with our choice. The location and the trips across to the mainland just added to the whole experience. We had worried that we might find it a problem, having to work around ferry times but it was really easy. We thought the food in the hotel was lovely, plenty of choice, always piping hot. Everywhere was clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. Rovinj and the surrounding area is beautiful and we would definitely return. We had a really great holiday and the only thing we would do differently would be to go a bit earlier in the summer before schools finish.

Just returned on 20 September from Hotel Istra, and have to say that it exceeded all expectations. Having read some previous reviews I wondered if we had done the right thing and booked this hotel - we so made the right decision. From the moment we arrived on the ferry from the town of Rovinj we were welcomed to the Istra by very pleasant and efficient reception staff. Booking in was quick and painless and the although quite vast we soon found our room. OK it was a bit like being in IKEA all orange and white melamine cupboards but it was clean and spacious with plenty of storage and with a wonderful view (book a sea view it really is worth the extra to guarantee that view) Some guests thought every room had a sea view and were disappointed to be looking at rocks and trees!! Only downside of this room was that the air con did not go below 23 degrees and it was so hot at night it made it difficult to sleep.

Although there is no real beach to speak of, just small areas of very fine gravel, the sea is very accessible (just take water shoes) The pools are great and there was plenty of sunbeds available all day - no-one putting out towels early morning to save the bed for the day!

Food in the buffet restaurant was a bit erratic at times with some strange combinations of food but it was good and there would be no need for anybody to go hungry as there is always something you can eat. Again this area was clean and spacious and the staff friendly and helpful - the unlimited wine and beer at the evening meal was a nice touch - although odd that you could not get coffee after your evening meal only tea!

Went over into Rovinj town many times and the ferry is great - runs on the hour from the hotel and takes about 15 mins.( no charge for guests at the Istra) The town is spectacular - cobbled streets, alleyways with shops and galleries at each turn. Numerous places to eat in town and all at a reasonable cost. Ate in the town on few occasions instead of going back to hotel. Did a couple of trips with Thomson - A taste of Istra - this was a long day and involved a lot of time on the coach but the village in the clouds was well worth the trip (wish we could have stayed here longer) The boat trip on the Lim Fjord was not what we thought we had booked - it turned out to be glorified ferry trip!

I will hopefully return to Croatia soon as I think that this is the "Med as it used to be" and I hope that when it joins the EU in 2013 it doesn't change for the worse as so many have in the past.

Room Tip: Rooms over the Wellness Centre are quieter as they are away from the Captains Bar and the entertain...

The town of Rovinj is wonderful. The hotel is on its own island about 20 minutes by ferry. The ferry is free, regular and enjoyable. The hotel is a little sixties concrete in its design but the rooms are pleasant well furnished and very clean. The views from the rooms are also very good. The facilities are excellent and the staff are all very helpful and charming.
The major drawback is the restaurant. To be honest we spent the evenings in the second week going across to Rovinj town to eat (excellent and cheap). The food at the buffet was largely tasteless. The menus were repetitive and some of the individual choices were strange - boiled carrots for breakfast? There is free local wine and beer with meals but if you eat late these can have run out, as can the juices and coffee at breakfast.
Also note that there are no beaches in Rovinj so people staying there can catch the ferry to the island and use the beaches there. So at sunset there is a rush for the ferries to return to Rovinj.
Good hotel but badly let down by the dining room
