“Rovinj A Great Location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 October 2013

Just returned from a week in Croatia. The hotel Istria is set on a small penninsula known locally as Red Island and can only be reached by a short boat journey. The staff were pleasant the hotel spotless and the food more than adequate.A nice touch was beer and wine with your evening meal. Our room had a lovely sea view well worth the extra.Evenings had very little entertainment not to everyone's taste.Rovinj is a lovely little town with a great atmosphere we spent a great saturday night there listening and dancing to a suprt group along with a mix of nationalities just having a good time.A note for Thompsons.Your on site rep Giancarlo was as good as we have experienced in all our many years of travel.Pleasant nothing was to much trouble knowledgable and with a passion for his country look after him he is a real asset to you.We really enjoyed our second trip to Croatia and hope it won't be our last.

My first trip to Croatia and we went to the Istrian peninsular with its lovely craggy coastline and wonderful scenery. We stayed at the Hotel Istra, which is on Red Island just off the coast and accessed by ferry from the mainland and the beautiful and ancient harbor town of Ravinj, with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants as well as the old town with its steeply sloping cobbled streets and church at the summit of the hill overlooking the harbor. Red Island itself is a beautiful wooded area with plenty of flora and fauna and nice, albeit it short walks. The Island is dominated by the hotel complex and old buildings dating back to when the island was garrisoned and fortified. The hotel building is nothing really to look at from the outside but extremely well appointed internally and with plenty of pools and sun terraces as well as the obligatory water sports there is much to see and do.

Room Tip: A room with a sea view is a must and if you can afford it the suites are well worth it.

Initially put off by the size of the hotel, but once found my way around very impressed. Hotel is very peaceful as it is situated on an island with no traffic. there is a free hourly ferry to the mainland. Comfortable room, good food and friendly staff.

Room Tip: A sea view is probably worth the extra cost

If you want a peaceful holiday with easy access to bars and restaurants look no further. The hotel is located on an island just 10 minutes boat ride away from Rovinj, the boat runs on the hour from 6am til 1am so you don't miss out on the nightlife offered. The food is great, lots of variety and the staff are friendly and helpful. Rovinj is a lovely old town with many quality restaurants and bars and are great value for money, would definitely return to the island in the future.

cannot fault this hotel at all, staff very helpful, hotel spotless, good choice of food, and entertainment most nights in bar, ferry was on time every day. the island is very pretty and lovely to walk around when fed up laying in the sun. no problems finding a sunlounger either by the pool or at waters edge. rovinj town is very nice, lots of restaurants and few shops, but expensive in shops, felt extremely safe wandering around at night as well as during day.out travel rep was great , very informative and helpful.will return to this hotel in future and have already recommended to friends

This hotel has a great location. It's such a shame that the little things spolit the holiday. First impressions on arrival were good. A lovely island on a spectacular coast line. Our taxi driver was welcoming and full of information. The boat ride to the island was nice. It's a shame that the reception team were neither welcoming or offering any useful information. Arriving at noon it would have been nice if they had explained where we could get lunch. We eventually found our room which was small and dark. I asked and got moved to a brighter room. Unforunately the rooms are too small for comfort and the furniture looks like it came from Ikea. Access to the wardrobe was difficult. Had to ask for a second pillow. Bathroom tiles look they are from another time. Shower had mould. Bed was comfortable but after investigation found air conditioning only reduced temperature by 3 degrees. As the room was 29 degrees at night this is not good enough when air conditioning is advertised. Only way to get room to a temperature cool enough to sleep was to leave balcony door open and then got bitten by insects all night. Bed was comforatable. None of the activities advertised seemed to be taking place. Getting a drink from the pool bar in the day took more effort than is should have. Overall the staff seemed unwelcoming and like things were too much trouble. Apart from the lady in then spa who was very helpful. We used the spa once. Unfortunately the wirlpools had cold water. Food was very poor unless you can live on grated carrot, fruit, pizza and chips for the duration of your stay. The buffet retaurant ran out of seats at peak times and had the atmosphere of the ikea canteen.
The description from thomson listed other a la carte restaurants but these were all closed. We went on 2 excursions with thomsoms. The best of istria was a route march with a grumpy guide with inadequate time to see much at all. Plitvice lakes was a 14 hour day. The lakes were lovely but too busy. We were told that we went at a quiet time but it was like shopping the saturday before christmas, being jostled out of the way when tring to take photos made the experiece of someting beautilful disppointing. If that was when it was quiet August would have been unbearable. We were told lunch was included but didn't eat it until 6 pm. This was too late as we had left the hotel at 7 am. In summary food was 2 star, rooms were a mediocre 3 star and staff were 2 star. Location was five star. This is a hotel pretending the be something it can't deliver. Managers need to spend some time in other four star places, get the aircon sorted and the staff retrained and hire a good chef. Then you would forgive the room size issues and call it four star.

Room Tip: Dont use this hotel if you cant sleep in the heat. Room 260 is very dark.

We've just returned from a week staying at the Hotel Istra on the Island of St Andrew just off the picturesque town of Rovinj. The whole area is absolutely beautiful, clean, tidy, and it felt extreemly safe. The hotel is nice, although could be so much more. The boat trip over to the Island is a nice experience, and goes on the hour every hour, The hotel is well maintained, however is extreemly modern and at times felt very souless. Hotel entertainment was intemitent and wasn't as per the programme. The food in the restaurant is reasonable, although nothing to write home about, it offers a good selection of cold meats, cheeses, salads & desserts, and a large selection of mains, however it appeared to be lacking vegetables on several occaions. Although busy the restaurant lacked personality, offering less atmosphere than our local M&S cafe, it was extreemly bright, and busy at times, and felt more like a works canteen. The service however was very good, and local wine and beer was included. The rooms were clean, bright, comfortable and functional, although felt a little on the small side at times especially given the amount of space between the wardrobe and bed, creating a bit of an issue when getting ready to go out in the evenings. Noise from the corridor, in the mornings, often lead to an early rise. The outdoor areas were exceptionally clean and well maintained, with ample sunbeds around the pools perfect for catching some rays. All in all, it was a nice holiday, in a good hotel, however the hotel could be so much more.
