“Brilliant hotel, visiting again this year!”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

You can always over think the reviews on here and not choose to go to certain places because someone put a bad one on!
This hotel was fabulous, we had a room overlooking the pool and other island including sea. It was for 3 people but it was a bit squashed. Without the third person, the room is spacious! Its very modern, white and bright. There is plenty of wardrobe space and a safe and mini fridge if you choose! I would stay in the same room again! I feel if you overlooked the front of the hotel, you may risk being blocked by the trees! The bathroom once again was good and no complaints in the room area!
The pool was a tad cold but warmed up over the week and there was also a child pool and a sea water pool! There is plenty of sun loungers and parasols, so you don't have to worry about getting up at 6am to get a sun lounger! There is also a park with zip wire and swings! Plus water sports and scuba diving! There is plenty to do! Plus many restaurants and bars around the island, so you don't have to go off at night if you don't want to!
The hotel itself is on an island about a 10 minute ride from rovinj! It is a lovely relaxing journey but you may have to stand on the busier trips (6/7/8pm). I could write a review for pages about everything in this hotel!
I could not give you any bad comments as we had a lovely time, so much were going back this year! PLEASE DONT LISTEN TO THE BAD REVIEWS...NOT TRUE!!!

Room Tip: Higher floors have better views. Go for a sea view/over the pool!

I have always avoided package holidays usually because so many hotels (however beautiful) feel like holiday camps and there is too much forced entertainment. This year we wanted something easy though so we did book a package at the Hotel Istra and I was very pleasantly surprised.

The location of the hotel (both Rovinj and the island) was gorgeous. Very like the best of Italy. The hotel was smart and exceptionally clean. The restaurant was a bit canteeny but that was because most people seemed to be on the half board option. The food was fine though and the staff where excellent at clearing away dirty crockery and keeping the tables clean which can be a problem in these buffet style restaurants. There were another couple of restaurants which were good although these were extra so to be honest we preferred to go into Rovinj for a meal on the occasions we wanted a break from the hotel.
Rovinj was very pretty and we ate at a number of restaurants, all were excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful.
Some people who had stayed at the hotel before were complaining that some of the facilities weren't open at the end of May but as we had never experienced them, there was nothing to miss! Personally the fact that it wasn't their peak season so there was no rush for sunbeads etc was a bonus!

There were 4 outdoor pools and also a lovely indoor pool and jacuzzi in the spa which I was surprised was open to all, even children so meant we could have a chill out even when it started to get cooler in the evening.

For the brave the swimming in the sea was easy (if cold) and there were lots of points were there were steps into the crystal sea. On a few days there were quite a few jellyfish though.

There were activities to do if you wanted - our son particularly enjoyed the archery and shooting which was just for an hour and you just turned up if you fancied a go. Very low key and Igor was brilliant - friendly but not 'in your face'.
The boat trip across made for a little adventure every time and they were every hour from early morning to midnight so didn't cramp your style.
There were lots of boat trips from Rovinj which were reasonable although with a child who gets seasick we didn't risk one this year.

Overall, it is a lovely hotel in a great place and suited for couples, and families.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed to have a sea view.

Dear Alison C,

We would like to sincerely thank you for writing such a nice and detailed review of hotel Istra and for giving us such a high rating. Seeing that overall you had a great stay with us and that whole of your family managed to enjoy and try most of the services fills us with joy. It seems that you have picked the right period to visit our island if you like more intimacy and less fuss around the pool. Pity you didn’t try our Lanterna restaurant for a less „canteeny“ meal but I guess it is always a good reason to come and visit us again.
Thank you once again for being our guest; we hope to welcome you soon again.

This hotel is fabulous. The setting is to die for with the walks around both islands just great to finish off the evening after having your fill in the restaurant. There is plenty of choice in the restaurant with something even for the most fussy of eaters. There is wine/beer and soft drinks on tap with your meal which you just help yourself to.If you are going out on a trip the next day you just order a breakfast bag at reception and collect it in the morning.
We went on a trip to Lake Bled in Slovenia which is absolutely beautiful but a very long day and because we missed our evening meal the Thomson rep had organised a cold meal to be in our room waiting for us when we got back which was a lovely touch.
I would recommend this hotel but i must say that waiting for the boat everyday got a bit tedious towards the end of the week and for this reason i would probably stay on the main land next time.
The rooms were cleaned to a good standard and the beds were very comfy.

Dear Bees,

We are very flattered to read such a wonderful review following your recent stay in hotel Istra and would like to thank you for taking the time to share your positive comment here on Tripadvisor. Our Food and Beverage team was happy to hear how much you liked the offer at our buffet Restaurant, each year we try to bring some additional ideas and we are proud that our efforts are being recognized.
The boat ride is just 15 minutes long and most of our guest find the experience very charming. If you prefer a more active holiday involving long daily excursions to other parts of Istria, than we can understand that the boat ride is taking some additional time and patience. Still, I see that this was not an obstacle in having a great time with us, and we do hope to see you as our guest soon again.

This is our second visit to this lovely hotel. Again everything was excellent - our room had amazing views from balcony and was kept spotlessly clean by the hotel staff. The food in restaurant was varied and always great quality - spoilt for choice each evening. (My husband did miss the banana ice cream this year though). Free local wine and beer was an added bonus.

The 10 min boat from Rovinj to the Island really does make the trip feel more special.

All staff were friendly and helpful and all public areas were very well kept.

I will definitely be back again, as I love Croatia and this lovely hotel.

Room Tip: Try for top floor room, as we could hear the footsteps on the wooden floors above

My husband and I stayed here for the first two weeks in May. I have to say the sight of Rovinj itself, as we waited on the jetty for the transfer boat to arrive, took my breath away. When we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted in a friendly and professional manner and the porter brought our cases from the boat to our room very quickly. We stayed in room 236 and had a magnificent view of the pools , the sea and the other island. There wasn't a day when I looked out of the window and didn't catch my breath, because it was so beautiful.
Our room was spotless and the cleaners were very friendly, as were all the staff in the hotel.
special mention must be made of Ivici (Ivan) and Karmen in the Aperativ bar, Valentina in the pool bar, Goran the night porter and all of the restaurant staff, who always had time to chat.
I probably wouldn't go there as early again, because the hotel was really only just starting to gear up for the season, with some of the facilities (E.G. the Captains bar and the Lavenda restaurant not yet open and also, because there were so few people staying in the hotel, the small boat was operating most of the time, which made the return trip from Rovinj at night quite interesting, especially if you're not too steady on your feet, either through a physical problem(like me) or having too much wine, although I have to say the boat crew are wonderful and really helpful.
The food was good, although a little bland for our tastes, but there is always something you can find to eat and if there is nothing you like, then it's you who has the problem, not the hotel. Breakfast was lovely, especially the omelettes and at dinner there was a good choice of fish, pasta pizza and meat and the cold selection of meats and cheese was lovely, as was the bread. The addition of free wine and beer at dinner was very nice and I have never known people to linger over dinner so much! Some people were in the restaurant from 1830 to 2100!
A special mention must be made of Nened, our Thomson rep. He was WONDERFUL and nothing was too much trouble for him. He really went over and above the call of duty and was such a lovely man as well.
Overall it was a wonderful holiday and I can't wait to go again, but it will probably be in September next time, as we have been assured by all the locals that this is the best time to go

Room Tip: mini bar in room is handy for storing wine from the supermarket, although it is well stocked and rep...

Weve visited three times now and continue to enjoy every stay. We had a lovely room overlooking the bay and small linked island. Views are tremendous from the island and because of island nature, feels relaxing and exclusive. The boat journey linking guests to the mainland is a pleasure in itself and it runs evry half hour from dawn til midnight allowing guests to have a night out in Rovinj. Rooms are pleasant with a tv if you need one! Nice to watch the BBC news before breakfast though. Meals are buffet style, slightly German orientated, but of a good standard. We ate out two nights as its such good value on the mainland and a lot more atmospheric than a hotel grand buffet. Wifi is free now in the lobby area. The only downside is if you want to eat lunch on the island and just fancy a sandwich, which most people do after a hearty breakfast, there is very limited choice. There is a pizza restaurant which is great, but if you want something simpler its a choice of cheese toasties or a ham baguette. Definitely room for improvement here, especially with a captured audience. Also, one small point, when asking about fillings at the sandwich bar, we were often given a grisly, thunder faced reception. This was noted by many guests. I know there sometimes can be a language communication issue, but there is no doubt that some personalities at the sandwich bar need softening a little. There was one exception, which was a small dark haired girl who smiled all the time.
Still, it fails to disappoint and succeeds in wanting you to return, year after year. We would recommend thoroughly.

Dear Jonathan A,

Thank you for such a nice review. It is truly rewarding to hear that you were able to enjoy our stunning location and that our attentive staff and services offered by the hotel have succeeded in inspiring you to return year after year. Your loyalty means a lot to us and serves as a best proof that we are heading in the right direction, motivating us to not only meet but exceed our guest’s expectations. That is why we take your lunch comment very serious and will look into possibilities of extending our offer in this particular area.
We regret to hear that a smiling girl was an exception among the unfriendly staff at the Sandwich bar. We sincerely hope that yours was an isolated case as we really strive to offer genuine and sincere hospitality to our guests. We will ensure that such experience is not repeated.

Thank you once again for taking the time to share your encouraging comments; we look forward to have you as our guest soon again.

We have been to the Hotel Istra for 3 years on the run and are going back again this year. the food is very good plenty of choice, Ok there can be sprouts at breakfast ,but you don,t have to eat them, but we have seen lots who do. The hotel and rooms are kept very clean. Staff are friendly and helpful. The wild life on the 2 islands is amazing. You can either just relax or join in the many activities its your choice. Rovinj is beautiful, plenty to see . the people are very friendly, the shop owners don,t hassel you to buy. Try a drink or ice cream at the out door cafe by the sailors memorial just sit and watch the world go by or walk up the cobble stone streets to the church whose inside is spectacular . or just site and watch the world go by We were at the hotel last September when there was a Thunder storm WHOOW , never seen a storm like it . We have seen many thunder storms when we have been in Florida but not like that. For us it is all and all a lovely place. roll on September

Room Tip: Quieter rooms are south facing. and you could catch the dolphin swimming in the bay
