“Idyllic island Location”
Reviewed 30 June 2010

Just returned from a weeks stay at the Hotel Istra (22nd-29th).
Very Clean and comfortable hotel and complex. We enjoyed the idyllic island location, which was a 20 minute boat trip from Rovinj( shuttle service all day) and would love to return sometime but not for the food or entertainment which were both mediocre and lowered the four star rating.
TRAVELLERS BE WARNED!!! If you intend to stay the last week in June there is an annual Salsa pool party on the last Sunday of the month, which is arranged for the general public. This year 1500 people arrived on the island and completely took over all the pool side facilities, including both children’s pools and outside eating areas. These 1500 people acted as if on an 18-30 holiday, drinking heavily, resulting in some being found passed out on sunbeds and quayside, and with some couples displaying behavior inappropriate for a family hotel. The management, although aware of previous paying guests complaints, seem to think its of no consequence and little inconvenience.

1 week holiday - 15 - 22 June. The hotel's very comfortable and clean, furnishings are modern and all in excellent condition. The rooms have free air con which worked fine. The views are brilliant - I believe every room in the hotel has a sea view and ours was fantastic - the balcony is a great place to enjoy pre-dinner drinks. The grounds are lovely and the island has lots of secluded (rocky) coves for bathing. The swimming pools were great and when we were there it was easy to get sun loungers. The food is excellent for a buffet - the best we've ever had on a package holiday - plenty of choice and all fresh and hot. The terraces outside the main bar also provide a lovely view of the sea and with swallows nesting under the eaves of the hotel, and swooping and diving in the evenings, it was quite idyllic. The boat trip is quick and adds to the charm of the holiday. We found it very reliable, but do note it only runs 1 x hour i.e. on the hour to Rovinj and on the half hour back.
Rovinj is a charming town with cobbled medieval streets - there isn't much shopping worh doing, but there are some lovely restaurants and bars.
We were there mid June and at that time the hotel was probably about 60% full. Even out of the main season, quite a few day trippers were coming over to the island/hotel on the boats. The hotel pools are very open and I'd think that in the summer there might be a problem with visitors using the hotel pools. The boats would probably get crowded as well - although technically the hotel charges visitors for the boats (hotel guests get a pass) nobody ever asked to see our pass and we never saw any of the visitors (and it was obvious they were visiting the island from what they were carrying) to pay. So we can thoroughly recommend for a break in say June, but not sure if this would cause problems with loungers/pool etc in high season?

Travelled to the Hotel Istra with my mother in May this year. The hotel was very nice, the island has a lot of amenities and the boat service was an hour was good. The food in the self-service restaurant included in our Thomsons half-board package was average. The food in the restaurant within the castle was really superb. The room was nice but I was a little disappointed by the fact that the balcony height obscured the sea view. We found the reception staff to be quite rude, but we didn't use reception services that much. On the whole, it was a very good holiday but the hotel was really only average for a 4*.

Have just returned from a week at the Hotel Istra in Rovinj, Croatia. We are struggling to find anything negative about this holiday so lets get straight into the positives.
Hotel we agree is not very pretty from the exterior but totally makes up for it regarding the location. Beautiful Island, lush with vegetation and the adjoining Island is just paradise with multitudes of birds, butterflies and lovely flowers. Both totally unspoilt and a place for a total relax where you can just sit take in the views and completely empty your head.
The main resort of Rovinj is a ten minute ferry ride which runs every hour and is free for hotel guests. Rovinj is steeped in history and sits on a working harbour with lots of lovely restaurants to choose from. Although the holiday is half board eating at Rovinj is such a lovely experience we went there on two evenings. There has been a criticism on other reviews regarding the lack of friendliness from staff and locals. We found totally the opposite and everyone was very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us both at the hotel and in the restaurants.
The wine is rather expensive but we do recommend the local house vino which is much cheaper and most excellent!
We can confirm that you can indeed have sprouts for breakfast along with broccoli and carrots if you so desire and believe it or not they seemed to be going down very well!
A wonderful holiday and we will definitely be going back so please don't book until we have secured a place!!

A lovely clean and contemprorary hotel set on an idyllic Island, 15min boat ride from centre of Rovinj. Can recommend staying here 100%, especially mid June when not too busy. Great for families, and also all couples looking for romance. Plenty of private and picturesque bays to settle in for the day.

went back to this hotel after having such a great time there last year and i was a little worried it wouldn't be as good second time round but i should'nt have worried as it was fantastic ! perfect location on it's own island , excellent variety & quality of food , spotlessly clean hotel & surrounding grounds ,stunning sunsets , lovely town of rovinj just 15 minutes away on the great hotel ferry boat (free for guests) that runs to & from the mainland every hour and we had dolphins swimming alongside the boat on a couple of evenings ! if you'd like a relaxing quiet holiday away from hoardes of football shirted blokes & noisy bars & clubs then this is ideal for you , my tip is to load up with beer ,soft drinks & snacks from the mini-supermarkets in rovinj as the hotel is pretty expensive although if you stay half board as we did then you do get free unlimited drink with meals ( lowenbrau beer , wines , soft drinks etc) which was nice , i think i'll end up going again some time as we love it there !

This was the best holiday I have ever had. The beauty of Red Island is stunning. It was so peaceful, no cars but plenty of wildlife and wonderful walks.

The hotel was modern and spotlessly clean. The only problem was I just couldn't bear to leave!
