“Pretty good hotel for DRC”
Reviewed 10 May 2012

I stayed here with a business group in late 2010. It was the best hotel we stayed in during our tour of the Kivus. No it's not a western-style hotel with marble and fake columns, but it's clean and comfortable with a great location right on the lake (beware the mozzies at night!). Food is ok, staff friendly and rooms large if basic.

Ihusi Hotel is undoubtedly one of the nicest places to stay in all DR Congo
It is nicely settled at the edge of the Kivu Lake and the family of crowned cranes wandering around certainly adds the holiday touch on it.

Rooms are basic but clean. Only drawback is bathrooms which would need to get renovated.

The restaurant offers good quality fresh food but be prepared to wait up to one hour before you get your order.

Breakfast is excellent, especially the local fruit salad and the coffee is also local.

All in all one of the nicest places to stay in the country especially given the poor quality of the average lodging options in the DRC

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms on first floor as they have a small terrace with brilliant lake view

The best thing I liked about the place is its location and facilities. It has a restaurant and a bar, both looking out into the lake. The grounds are well-kept. The hotel has a gym that is open from 6:30am-9am then from 3-8pm, which has the standard treadmill and weights. There is a pool, and massage is offered, too.

There are various types of rooms, but I stayed in the average one (Rm 10) at $90/night (including breakfast). It came with a small ref, tv, aircon. The bathroom was quite big, with a tub, a small sink, and hairdryer. The tub fixtures were defective, though. My repeated request for service was unheeded. Internet speed from the room (using LAN cable) is acceptable. But if you need wi-fi, best bet is to connect from the reception.

Restaurant menu features pizza, pasta, and heavier entrees, with an average price of US18-20 each. Breakfast is buffet style consisting of bread, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, coffee/tea. Since only the tables on the terrace are used during breakfast, you may need to share your table with other guests. Always ask for the "official" invoice after your meal just to be sure; the restaurant staff sometimes handwrite the total bill on a piece of ordinary paper.

Service is painfully slow. And if you decide to pay for your entire stay upon arrival, make sure you keep a copy of your receipt. When I checked out, there was no record of my payment in their file. Since I paid in cash, it could have been a problem, but I had my receipt.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the second floor with a terrace looking out into the lake.

If you are a visitor to Goma, its probably the best place to live in. Its very close (approximately 100 meters) from Grand Barrier (a Border between Rwanda and DRC). Its on the bank of Kivu Lake. A clean and developed place with wifi, Tenis Courts, swimming pool and Gymnasium. Sarena Hotel of Gissenyi is visible from its restaurant.
A good place to saty in.

Stayed on business in May '11 for 4 nights. Travelled with Congolese partner so suspect sidestepped a number of potential problems. Setting beautiful on the waters edge. Pool area clean and had room on the waters edge, past tennis courts, very pleasant. Rooms large, clean and minimalistic. Bathrooms need some work. Food, particularly fish, quiet acceptable. Good fresh bread and fruit for breakfast. Don't be in a hurry, it will only stress you out. My Congolese partner said "Just smile" and it works wonders even when the tensions run a bit high. Lots of cold beers around the pool, UN and NGO teams aplenty. Remember to have cash to pay for your accommodation, credit card machines seldom work in this part of the world.

Room Tip: Rooms on the waters edge, past the tennis courts

The hotel improved after a recent overhaul. It's certainly a challenge to open/run a hotel in the region. Therefore, hats off to the management. The location on the Lake Kivu shores is excellent, as the plastic belt is a bit further up on the lake. Wouldn't recommend swimming there, though. Be very careful once you leave the hotel gates. Security situation within Goma town is nothing for the Africa new-comer-tourist. As passenger or driver, keep car doors tightly locked at all times.
The pool is nice and clean, tennis court always available, they have a good coach who is ready for a match in case you are travelling alone. Restaurant and pool bar have something common in DRC- a notorious absence of change. So don't leave big notes. If you don't like the sight of a waiter, that's the place to be. Probably badly organized. The waiters have to run to the reception for every penny as the bar cash box is always left empty. I must add that once you get hold of a waiter, they are friendly and well-mannered. I know their salary, so please leave a tip.
