“Best value hostel in Ecuador”
Reviewed 1 April 2011

This is the best value hostel we stayed at in Ecuador. The rooms are spotless and the location can't be beat. If you are coming for the animal market in Otovalo, get up early (530am) and watch the farmers coming down the hill in front of the hostel with their cows, sheep, chickens etc. Roberto is the man, one of the coolest people we ever met.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front with a balcony

Our room was nice and clean with a big bathroom and balcony with a beautiful view of town and the surrounding volcanoes. The kitchen is huge and has everything you could ever desire to cook with and more! There is also a coffee machine with real coffee beans... The owner, Roberto, treated us like family from the moment we arrived, helped us with directions to everywhere we needed to go, and even drove us to the bus terminal when it was raining. He is such a sweetheart and really makes you feel at home! The location is great, right in town, and you can easily walk anywhere, including the market and the bus terminal. This hostel offers everything you could ever ask for! Definitely recommended to all!!!

We stumbled on this place accidentally. Initially, we thought the building was vacant, but don't be fooled, you need to ring the bell. Anyways, what I really want to do is tell a story. My whole trip in Ecuador I had one thing constantly nagging at me, EAT CUY! We were a few days out from leaving the country and still sin cuy. Roberto, the owner, did one of the greatest things for us, we gave him some gas money (and bought him a beer at dinner) and he drove us to a small town north of Otavalo that served cuy, he even got us in the kitchen to watch the entire cooking process. It was without doubt one of the purest Ecuadorian experiences I had. I am overly grateful to Roberto for his willingness to assist us in our great cuy adventure.

Excellent location, clean nice rooms, hot shower etc... All is said in previous comments about the rooms and location.

More importantly we felt we are really welcomed to stay at the hotel. Owner, Roberto, told us about possibilities around Otavalo. Roberto let us to use kitchen of the house. We didn't have time to test washing machine even though we spent 6 nights at Chasqui.

Currently Roberto is building more rooms next to current house. Hopefully even more people can enjoy hotel atmosphere in future.

Excellent option if you are planning to stay in Otavalo. Personally I think Chasqui was one of the best hostels I stayed in Ecuador (great balance between price and quality)

We came to Otavalo for the famous Saturday market and spent 3 nights at Hostal Chasqui in total and could not more highly recommend the hostel and its owner, Roberto. Upon our arrival, Roberto showed us the entire place, informed us about the free use of the laundry machine and spent 20 minutes recommending the best sights in the area and the hot spots for the Saturday market. His advice to hike the Laguna Cuicocha and Cascada Peguche were fantastic and made our trip to Otavalo truly memorable.

The rooms are quite spacious with private bathrooms and two beds. They are quite clean, with tile floors and hot water in the bathroom. The bed was provided with at least 5 blankets to ensure warmth during the relatively chilly Andean nights. The hostel is located on the outskirts of Otavalo SE of town. It is the perfect location as it is within walking distance of everything and yet quiet during the evenings with no interrupted sleep.

In general, we would recommend this hostel to anyone and at less than $10/day per person, any budget traveler would be at home here.

i booked this hostel on a whim. my friend and i weren't planning to make a trip to otavalo but went at the last minute. We had a great stay at this place. It's located about a 10 minute walk from the plaza de ponchos (the main market) and is on a small hill in a safe area. Quiet, nice beds and a hot shower, what more could you ask for? Oh yeah, and a great view to boot.

We took a taxi from the terminal de los buses and was greeted by the owner once we got there. he is sort of ecuadorian-hippie-esque and a lot of fun, super nice. he ended up driving us to the bus terminal the next day! All in all, would recommend.

Great location for Otavalo markets. We had a double room with private bathroom. Very clean. Consistently hot water. Tv in room. Owner very friendly and helpful with tips on what to see in Otavalo and provided maps. Hostel has great deck where you can enjoy a beer with the sunset. Kitchen available for use but wedidn{t use it.
