Description: A piece of history... When we, as new Dutch owners of Hostal Doña Esther, bought the place about 12 years ago, we didn't really have a restaurant in mind. We planned a small B&B, but the restaurant and kitchen were there, so we thought to give it a try. The only thing we knew then was that we liked good food - a lot! and the preparation of it. After finding a name - Arbol de Montalvo - we started to reorganize the restaurant, we made an almost completely new menu and started our adventure. Visiting the provincial shops and markets, we soon found the right places for meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and other ingredients, like herbs and spices. Besides that, after a while, we found the best people to prepare the recipes we thought of - dishes with a mixture of known local flavors (like avocado, corn, quinoa, chocolate) and new international flavors (moreover the herbs and spices we use and the imaginative combinations we sometimes make). With all this input for a good restaurant we soon found the right balance between savory and healthy food and we hope that the choice you make from our menu will stick as a lasting experience and - if possible - will bring you back to our restaurant in the future. Your food will be: prepared by: Lilian, Susana, Jenny & Freddy (pizzas) served by: Adriana & Lucy invented by: Arthur & Wendy

My husband and I were invited by a neighbor to accompany him on his weekly trek to Otavalo for pizza. We headed out via bus and took the short walk to Dona Esters. I liked the place as soon as I walked in. The atmosphere is quaint. They was a large party of 19 already seated. That would have overwhelmed most small establishments. However, we were waited on promptly and our order was ready very quickly. Dona Esters offers a nice variety of both traditional and non-traditional pizzas. I had the gorgonzola pizza, which was very good. My husband ordered the Pizza Margharita with the addition of ham. He also liked his. Our neighbor said the pizza weren't up to their usual standard. He could see from the open kitchen that they had a new cook. The crust was a tad undercooked, but the flavor was very good. I will definitely be back once the new cook gets a little practice at the oven. We stopped by the kitchen on the way out. The cook was not busy. I had a few questions about the oven, since we have just had a brick oven built on our patio. He was very friendly and showed me how it all worked. He said the pizzas only stay n the oven for about 30 sends, because of the intense heat (about 800F degrees). It was a great meal and a great learning experience.

We had a pizza and a salad, both were excellent ! The place is also nice in itself, with wood oven for pizzas and candles on the tables.

It is more expensive than in other restaurant offering the same kind of food in Ecuador.

Excellent restaurant. We ate here twice, once with 5 and once with 6 people. Cocktails unfortunately very bad (as 6 x bad one night, we didn't try again) and beer and soft drinks ridiculously overpriced.

I have been here a few times and it has always been quiet but that is probably because it was during the week. Good range of meals and a huge selection of pizzas that are cooked in their pizza oven. The steak is great and they cook it to perfection (not over cooked like often happens!!) Good service and resonably priced.

We spent 10 days in Otavalo and discovered this restaurant 5 days into our visit, after which time we only ate dinner here. Their pizzas, pastas and meat dishes are very tasty and good size portions. The prices are slightly higher than other similar restaurants but the quality and portion size make it worth it. Staff are very friendly and bring a warm cinnamon drink on arrival which is a nice touch.
The restaurant is in the back of the hotel and you have to ring a bell to get in. You could easily walk past it if you weren't specifically looking for it.
