Hostal Rincon del Viajero
Reviewed 4 December 2012

Otavalo itself is a touristic non-budget place so this hostel was the same price than others in the area.
It was clean, the rooms were big enough and the common area with a fireplace was the best.

One thing I didn't like is that you only have one bunch of wood for the fireplace which ends quickly and then if you want more you have to pay for it. Firs time on my life I see this and it was 2$!

Room Tip: Be careful with the fireplace, you'll have to pay for the wood!

This place was ok, but after 1 night we decided to look at other options and ended up moving to other lodging in the same town. Our room felt like a cheap motel room, and the bed was uncomfortable. The window opened up to a walkway, and the curtain didn't cover the window, so there wasn't much privacy. The bathroom was down the hall.

On the plus side, the internet was fast and there was a hammock on the roof. The common areas looked nice.

We´ve stayed there for 3 nights and liked it a lot. You get a warm welcoming feeling when entering from the street and the room was also very nice. WE liked the relaxded atmosphere and the really nice owners who helped us planning our trip in the area.

Very nice american-local run Hostel. Good breakfast, clean basic rooms with hot water all the time and a beautiful rooftop terrace and a wonderful small room with a fireplace.
Otavalo is not big, so everything ist in close walking distance.

@Rincon: Thanks for your hospitality!

This hostel is located within easy 5-min walk from the bus station - don't be misled by maps which indicates 3 blocks away. It is in fact so accessible to everywhere. The hostel itself has such a cozy & homey atmosphere, very clean, & plenty of hot water. The staff although not very fluent in English, made up by their willingness to be helpful. The breakfast that comes with our room was really good. One of the best hostels I've stayed in during my entire month touring South America.

Stayed here for 4 nights and found it to be a great place to stay. It has a great, safe atmosphere, staff were very friendly, breakfast good (choice of eggs, fruit or granola) with fresh bread and tea or coffee (what more do you need?!), free wi fi, and great location. We also found Edgar on reception to be friendly, helpful and charming (like our Equadorian Granadad) - he even sang us a few songs with his guitar one night which was a lovely touch.

I've stayed in a lot of budget hotels and this place ranks among the best. VERY clean, rooftop hammocks, cozy fireplace, quaint breakfast area. However, I will say, if you are a single female traveler like myself, watch out for Edgar, one of the employees. He was very kind but made me feel uncomfortable. Everything else was perfect.
