The hacienda is beautiful and the rooms and shared spaces are lovely. I would recommend the place on this alone. For us there was something lacking in the service of the place, quite a few things went wrong( small things mind) and they didn't seem that bothered. Also we went horseriding, again the scenery is stunning but the guy taking you out doesn't ask you how experienced you are at all and you simply plod around. As experienced riders we would have saved ourselves the money and just gone for a walk! It's all here but that extra human something is missing here.

Thank you for such appreciative words. But we are so sorry that you sensed an indifference by Cusin's extraordinary Spanish-speaking staff. As with all good grooms, they uncannily detect ability by the rider's riding stance, especially stirrup heel-placement. For such, and in remarkable countryside, language is un-important.

We stayed at the sister hotel, Las Palmeras, in Otavalo, and were invited to see Hacienda Cusin. We spent more than 2 hours wandering the various gardens, and public rooms. Hospitality was evident everywhere, with offerings of a serve-yourself hot beverage in the farther reaches of the grounds.

The gardens are worthy of hours of exploring, with enticing sight lines, and the mystery of a garden feature unfolding before you, revealing a hidden feature just beyond your view. Your feet are led on and on to see the next courtyard and fountain, the ponds at the bend in the path, the views from atop a high vantage point, and even amusing figures perched on the peak of tiled roofs.

We only had tea there, but will definitely put this spot on our list for the next stay in Otavalo. The staff was very polite and helpful, the grounds (of course) are immaculate and manicured. The vision and creativity of the restoration of the buildings and the interior design of the rooms leaves you speechless.

Thanks for an afternoon of peace, solitude, and relaxation to the owner and manager of Hacienda Cusin....next time I will definitely bring my watercolors to record some of the scenes.

What a wonderful surprise it was pulling into Hacienda Cusin after a grueling day of travel. We weren't sure what to expect but were so grateful to ROW adventures for suggesting a few days in Ecuador's Highlands, from the moment we arrived till the moment we left it was perfect. We didn't arrive till late, well after dark...the staff was waiting patiently and were very helpful with checking us in and getting us situated . The following day HC helped arrange a guided tour of the area, what a fantastic day with our guide Chris visiting lakes, national parks and the markets. We also loved the beautiful grounds, taking daily walks seeing what a masterpiece Nick has created in this little corner of the world. Nick happened to be at HC and gave us a tour of the grounds and all I can say is WOW! Thank you so much for the passion and love you have brought to Ecuador...we will be back.

Hacienda Cusin is a remarkable and unique place to stay not only in the Otavalo area, but a must-seen landmark in Ecuador. It's full of relics and elegant details everywhere. The staff is great and friendly. The food and services are AAA. My favorite thing to do while staying there is walking around the gardens, you just can't take enough pictures of such marvelous place.

If this place didn’t exist someone would have to invent it. Fortunately that someone was, indeed is, Nik Millhouse. He took a vision, laced it with love and passion and created this wonderful oasis. At one end of the scale, it is an astonishing re-creation of Spanish-colonial life right down to the lavish furnishings. On the other hand it is eccentric, irreverent (viz. the ‘Basil’baroque altar, with cui (guineapig) angels, indigenous tree-crosses, above a large stone fireplace), rude (heaven to hell murals), crazy, crammed with characterful period antiques, tricky trompe l’oeil tiles, peaceful, unworldly and sometimes plain bonkers.

My three-night stay, with scrumptious food, log-fires, hot-water bottles, a gracious staff and magnificent gardens was not long enough.

Hacienda Cusin has been the perfect end to a South American adventure, starting with a Galapagos cruise and finished being so much more. Long may you reign, Nick. We absolutely loved Hacienda Cusin and will be back.

I stayed for two nights, and wanted more. Granted, there were probably about 12 people staying there while I visited, but given the green space and horizontal layout, even at full capacity you're assured plenty of tranquility.

Imagine falling asleep with embers in one corner of the room and waking up to a window filled with garden space. Imagine walking out of your room and being able to stroll through what seems like part of Madrid's Prado or Paris's Louvre. Imagine staff knowing exactly how you like your eggs or coffee. And imagine a spot where you can meet and talk with guests while inspired by a particular statue, painting, flower or fountain.

I'll confess two regrets: not coming with a special someone and relying on the brakes of the rentable bikes on the premises.

I'm ready to head back for more.
