“Lovely location, rich culture, memorable conversations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2014

The views from hilltops are amazing here, and the setting is tranquil, away from the bustle of the Otavalo Market (great in its own way). But the real treat here is the richness of knowledge from the co-owners, and their generosity in sharing what they know. Their consulting library alone, open on an honour system, is a gold mine of information on cultural, social and political issues. The artwork on display throughout is fascinating. The tone is unpretentious, but the intellectual level of discussion is stimulating. Six of us stayed here, all very different people, and the staff found something really special for each one of us. As they say in Michelin guides, vaut le voyage, this place is worth a trip in itself. It's also a great base for hiking.

Room Tip: All rooms we saw were beautiful. Be ready to climb up and down a lot, just to get to meals!

Casa Mojanda is located in a paradise where the weather is like eternal Spring, the food is mouth watering delicious, the service is generous and warm and bountiful, the price is reasonable and the options for doing and seeing wonderful sights unlimited. This is a very special place run by very special people who truly care about their visitors' comfort and enjoyment.

Room Tip: Room #1 was one of the few rooms to have a fire place. Going to sleep with a warm fire near your b...

Casa Mojanda is the total experience. Set in the emerald green hills above Otavalo, we had our own private casa with a beautiful view and wood burning fireplace. You can do a lot or nothing. We toured the market in Otavalo, hiked cross country to a waterfall, rode Peruvian ponies, and sat in the wood fired hot tub watching fireflies. By far the best part was the overall hospitality. They graciously accommodated my gluten free diet, providing great meals. We particularly enjoyed our conversations with the owner. We will definitely be back.

Two nights and days in that cozy, comfortable and beautiful place with an amazing view and energy.

The fact that the owner and his family recieve the visitors, gives it a very special and personal touch.

With wonderful landscapes and the Otavalo market very near, it is an option to relax and to feel in home, without being.

It's a place that remains in memory. I dream to return one day, no very distant.

The staff was genuinely interested in our trip and made it a truly unique experience. They arranged two individual tours that were excellent. Transportation into to was also provided. The view is inquisitor and the common rooms very comfortable.

Room Tip: Ask to be close to the main building.

We have stayed at Casa Mojanda for a special occasion and stopped by for a meal on numerous other visits to Lake Mojanda and the area. Whether going for a weekend, or a few hours, you are sure to have a unique, special experience. Hospitality is one of many strengths of Casa Mojanda, where meals are served family-style and a complimentary glass of wine is often on hand. Guests are invited to play instruments beautiful set around the warming, homey fireplace. It's a perfect place to have lunch, then get some fresh air with a invigorating walk down to Cascada Taxopamba. All of the friends and family who have joined us in our experiences at Casa Mojanda have raved about the time we spent there. It's important to work out prices for meals and overnights ahead of time in order to avoid any unwanted surprises, however, Casa Mojanda has always been willing to work out a special lunch menu for our whole group in order to help us meet our budget. We have always thought that our time and any money spent there have been well worth it. We will surely return! R.I.P. dear dog Meme, we will miss you leading us down to Cascada Taxopamba!

We were deeply touched by your review, Tanis, and we want to say thanks not only in our name but also in the name of all those who make Casa Mojanda possible, we mean, our devoted staff. We are all very sad about Mei Mei. No other guide could do it as she did. Hope to have you around here some other time!

In Feb. 2014 six of us Canadians spent a memorable four days at Casa Mojanda - a series of comfortable cabinas appropriately constructed to fit into a hillside setting with panoramic views, and having excellent relations with the neighbouring indigenous Minga (community). Casa Mojanda is an ideal spot from which to access the Otavalo valley and its many artisan villages. However, you can walk to a waterfall, horseback ride, or soak in an outdoor hot tub right on/from the hotel's premises. Then there is the question of the delicious meals served in their restaurant... where you can also meet some of the very interesting owners of some of the other cabinas (yes you can buy one, or purchase a plot of land on which to construct your own). The 'management' and 'staff' quickly accepted us as part of a larger familia. The owners showed a willingness to engage with us in a broader political discussion of events in the country and in the region, something that we appreciated and that is not often experienced in other 'tourist' destinations. We were also accorded one staff member we could turn to help us plan the various visits that filled the interesting days spent this part of the Ecuadorian sierra. On our final night the local Minga-based group Ali Huayra brought their traditional music to the dining room, and everyone was soon up and dancing. After the warmth of the hospitality enjoyed at Casa Mojanda and experienced in the Otavalo valley generally, were we keen to return to the minus 20 degree weather in Canada...? I think not!

Room Tip: All the cabinas/rooms are great
