Located between Cotacachi and Ibrarra, there is a village called San José de Chaltura. Within this village there are plenty of restaurants serving guinea pig (cuy). The area for that is even called Cuyes. Take a bus to Natabuela and ask to be left at the park and then take a taxi or take a bus. Alternatively, take a taxi from Otavalo, Cotacachi or Ibarra for around 10 dollars to get here.
They say it is the best cuy. We had already tasted cuy in Quito and the meat was somewhat more fatty but they had seasoned it better. Here they had put batter on it so this was a different experience. Dinner does not start until after 19 hrs. so we were early for 18.30. All in all it was nice to taste authentic cuy. The village was probably nice had we arrived during the day. We were the only foreigners on the bus. The cuy cost 13 dollars.
