Right next door to El Rincon del Viajero. The prices are similar (I think Rincon is a bit cheaper for a private bath though), but the staff is the difference-maker. Rincon has nice, amiable staff (and adequate numbers) where Amanecer is understaffed and they´re a bit grumpy. Nothing malicious, just not real friendly.

Room Tip: Get a private bathroom if you are at all phobic towards hairs.

I can't believe the reviews. I thought I could trust the reviews about this lodging and had high hopes. However, we arrived at night and the owner wanted money up front real quick. We were shown a room on the bottom floor. The room had two beds and was stuffy and small. The roof was old and you could hear every footstep. The bed sheet had dark stains on it and the sheets were worn out. We were next to the hang out area so loud people can disturb you. The bathroom had dingy tiles. We were in shock and we left real quick.

I traveled with my daughter and her two young children (ages 1 and 3). We had two rooms. The room in the center of the courtyard had generous windows and 3 beds, very spacious. My room was smaller. The hostel is very centerallized to the market and very close to the bus station. The breakfast had 3 good selections, one being chocolate pancakes. Several good restuarants close by. The rooms near the street were rather noisy.

This centrally-located hostal is a homey place with comfortably appointed rooms. Nice to have a good breakfast included in the reasonable price for a night!

Water was very hot with great pressure! Worth the price of admission itself.

I have stayed here at least 8 times between 2000 and 2007. I met my husband in Ecuador when I was there in 2000 and have visited this hostel with every family member and friend who has traveled to Ecuador over the years with me.

It has a great wooden, rustic feel to it with a wonderful open patio with hammocks. If you reserve early enough you can choose to have a private bath for a few bucks more, but the shared baths never caused me a problem as there are plenty of them.

For around $8 a night including breakfast I have never wanted to stay anywhere else. The beds have always been comfortable and the rooms quiet enough.

The location is perfect, being 1 block from the market. The breakfast is not what you normally would expect with your choice of eggs and toast or fruit pancakes. It's huge and really good.

I'm going back this summer and will be booking another weekend here.

Just got back from Otavalo, and stayed in Hostal Valle del Amanecer. The place is centrally located, very near the Plaza de Ponchos market, very handy. They have a variety of rooms all of varying prices from $7-14 for single travellers, a bit more for doubles.
The rooms are surrounded by a pretty courtyard with a few hammocks and jacaranda, very twee and pretty. However, the lovely atmosphere was marred by the moody lady that worked in the cafe in the place, not welcoming at all! I asked her if there was laundry service, she said that I would get my clothes back by early eve, I told her that was perfect as I didnt have any spare warm clothes and could survive till eve with summery wear, however, when I asked her at 7pm if my clothes were ready, she told me that I wouldnt get them back till the next day. When I did, they were damp, she told me they werent damp, just 'cold!'. Luckily the market sold many a warm Alpaca jumper!

They serve a free brekkie between 7.30am-10am included in the price, but unfortunately, I overslept and at 10.30am asked her if it would be OK just to have a coffee as I had missed out on the free breakfast, and was leaving for Quitoin a few mins time, she grunted and said I'd have to pay for it! Charming and not very hospitable! This may seem petty to some of you, but when you're travelling on yer tod, sometimes the only conversation you might have with someone on that particular day of travel, could be in fact a hostal owner. Oh, ask for an extra blanket as it can get mighty cold there at night. I would recommend the place but stay away from the gloomy lady. bumble
