Love this place, only 2 blocks from the main square market, and on Saturday it is only one block. Across the corner is the in store made ice cream, banana splits $1.35 . Breakfasts are awesome, one of the choices is pancakes with chocolate sauce, mixed fruit and granola. . Great restaurant, good steaks, the best pastas, lots of vegetarian meals also. Lorena is just the best cook with everything fresh from the local markets daily. Want to travel around Ramiro can help you, either take you or direct you where to go. He knows all the great spots to see. Rooms are very clean, but basic, choice of private bathrooms or shared. 24 hour access, night time staff. Lovely court room filled with local flowers and orchids.

Room Tip: Don't get a room on the main street, it is noisey, the garbage truck sounds like the ice cream...

If you're looking for amazing comfort and service you have come to the wrong place!
This accommodation is cheap but completely relaxed, full of character and a beautiful place.
We arrived on a Thursday night for the markets, planning to only stay 2 or 3 days and then head of on our adventure! We ended up staying 10 days! We moved rooms 3 times in total, based on the fact that we had not booked and just kept saying '1 more night, maybe 2'. The beds were modest, not really any worse than any other bed in Ecuador but a great place to rest your head after a huge day of shopping, the rooms are very rustic but beautiful and always kept clean.
Head out into the courtyard to kick back in the hammocks under a massive avocado tree that provides plenty of shade for the harsh equatorial sun! Hot showers (shared in hostel rooms) clean and tidy! Staff were all super friendly although speak very little to no English but will try! Will stay again when we head back! Loved it!

Room Tip: Go for a single or the big one in the middle if you want to splash the cash!

We had this place virtually to ourselves when we were in Otavalo so our experience was probably a bit different from others, but we enjoyed it. Nice atmosphere with 2 levels of rooms circling a stone courtyard with avocado trees, hammocks and an outdoor fireplace. Very relaxed and tropical feel and we spent a few afternoons napping in the hammocks and enjoying the peaceful vibe (good after shopping in the Otavalo market). Rooms were very simple, a bit small, but adequate and clean (sort of had straw like roofs so it had a rustic feel for sure and you could hear small animals walking on the roof at night sometimes). So those looking for luxury would be best suited elsewhere. Showers were hot (but first you had to ask staff to turn on the water heater). Breakfast was included in the price and was a nice choice of pancakes with fruit, granola & yogurt & fruit, or fresh bread and jam. A la carte options were available for an additional fee too. Staff were friendly, but not overly helpful with tourist information…likely you will have to fend for yourself to find activities/tour agencies, etc. Our last day we had a few hours to kill before taking a bus to Quito so the hammocks were the perfect place to wait.

Right next door to El Rincon del Viajero. The prices are similar (I think Rincon is a bit cheaper for a private bath though), but the staff is the difference-maker. Rincon has nice, amiable staff (and adequate numbers) where Amanecer is understaffed and they´re a bit grumpy. Nothing malicious, just not real friendly.

Room Tip: Get a private bathroom if you are at all phobic towards hairs.

I can't believe the reviews. I thought I could trust the reviews about this lodging and had high hopes. However, we arrived at night and the owner wanted money up front real quick. We were shown a room on the bottom floor. The room had two beds and was stuffy and small. The roof was old and you could hear every footstep. The bed sheet had dark stains on it and the sheets were worn out. We were next to the hang out area so loud people can disturb you. The bathroom had dingy tiles. We were in shock and we left real quick.

I traveled with my daughter and her two young children (ages 1 and 3). We had two rooms. The room in the center of the courtyard had generous windows and 3 beds, very spacious. My room was smaller. The hostel is very centerallized to the market and very close to the bus station. The breakfast had 3 good selections, one being chocolate pancakes. Several good restuarants close by. The rooms near the street were rather noisy.

This centrally-located hostal is a homey place with comfortably appointed rooms. Nice to have a good breakfast included in the reasonable price for a night!

Water was very hot with great pressure! Worth the price of admission itself.
