We stayed at This hotel from 26th Jan to 2nd Feb on Thomson package. Got to mention the bad things first.
Booked this as a Platinum hotel & expected certain standards. Also wanted to avoid school half term. Both ours in early 20's so wanted a bit of adult time. Anyhow the room was ok once we got into it as the door was jammed shut. A touch of joinery later and we could get in and out. Silly things like the safe being locked, bulbs out and one of the sockets not working we're all resolved, but not really what you want on a holiday. Two things beyond the hotels control was a broken chair and broken table. Someone in the past has obviously been standing on them. Perhaps this should have been picked up.
The room itself was ok but a little tired. Clean with great attention from the room attendant. Room 1387 had a sea view ( somewhat lost in what I think a sea view is) and was probably one of the furthest rooms from the hotel reception area and main complex.
The other problem was half term. We checked and the ones in the UK are middle of February. So imagine our surprise when we discovered it was Egyptian half term. The only heated pool was full of kids enjoying themselves; and why not. Lots of baby's crying, dads shouting and gesticulating and an overall feeling of family holidays. The kids don't have a sleep pattern regime and are up till all hours. Even the hotel staff were shaking their heads.
I do wish the Thomson rep in the shop had told me about this. I didn't think to check. We were told by the numerous Egyptholidayists we spoke to that we should avoid Ede as it gets quite busy with the festivities.
If you have mobility issues then I would give some thought to booking this hotel. There are ground floor rooms and the restaurants are on the ground floor. However if you want to go to reception or the main building bars than there are steps to negotiate and may prove tiresome or difficult. The pool bars close at 6pm.
So the hotels good points. There are obviously a number of return visitors to this hotel. The grounds are wonderful. Lots of amazing exotic plants, shrubs and trees which are a treat for any garden lover. The hotel complex is quite spacious as well so you can stroll around and enjoy the sun. No problems with sunbeds although we didn't do the beach apart from a quick paddle.
There are people trying to sell trips etc ( they have to earn a living) but a polite "no thanks" was met with a smile and that was the end of it.
There are plenty of pool bars but the service is sporadic. I found it best to go and collect the coffees etc myself. By day six one of the guys came and asked us! Have to say I found the coffee to be a bonus as the alcoholic drinks left a lot to be desired. They didn't really taste like vodka or rum. In fact one classic moment was a Russian lady tasting a vodka and then pulling the most amazing grimace I have ever seen. I would have preferred to have the opportunity to pay for a decent branded drink such as on two previous Thomson cruises.
The main adult dining restaurant was fine with decent choices and all well prepared with chefs ever present. Thanks to Lohran( hope I spelt her name correctly) who greeted us at every mealtime and Elshenawy who served us at the table with drinks and a smile.
We also did the Middle Eastern and Asian a la carte restaurants. Both are very good but more choice on the Asian menu. Highly recommended.
Evening entertainment was not good and the loud music booming intermittently through the day was a bit off putting but maybe different when half term holidays are not on.
Would we return to the hotel? The answer is yes because of the grounds, the service and the food. Is there room for improvement? Yes as we continued to play door lock roulette all week and some of the staff favoured certain individuals within the main building bars. There seems to be enough managers present during the day but seemed to disappear of an evening.
What would we change? The ability to buy or have served a premium spirit. Don't want gallons of the stuff, just the odd nice drink. Have one of the pool bars open of an evening. Warm evenings in nice grounds that are well lit should be used and it's something we definitely missed the opportunity of doing - it's about atmosphere and holiday experience (Previous holiday at Baron Palms Resort were able to visit the beach bar of an evening)
It is a nice place and we are actually looking to go back in the next few weeks whilst I recover from a knee operation. Any questions give me a shout. Mahalo
