Myself and my partner, 23 and 25 respectively have recently arrived home from a 10 night stay at The Sharm Grand Plaza in Nabq Bay. In previous years we've travelled America and been on a few short city breaks, so this was our first lengthy beach holiday together. We got a great deal on this hotel, but chose it down to its reviews more than its price. We have both experienced many all inclusive holidays in the past, so travelled with an open mind - however the Sharm Grand Plaza exceeded all expectations. I can honestly say we didn't experience any negatives on this holiday, sure enough there are some aspects which weren't perfect, but by no means did they affect our holiday in any negative way.
The hotel and its grounds are beautiful. Really well maintained, clean and a nice mix of modern and traditional in its design. We loved our room as we were so surprised by its size. We were in the Tiran block room 1129 and would recommend this to anyone as the views over both the pool and sea were fantastic! The bathroom was also so much bigger than any hotel I've stayed in which I loved! Our cleaner was also fantastic - he gave us little gifts such as robes, recycled snorkels and beach shoes and we always had some kind of towel art - a novelty which never failed to bring a smile to our faces! Fab air con and the curtains were fab - kept the light and heat out!!!
From reading previous reviews, we weren't expecting much from the food at the hotel. We both love our food and where as my boyfriend is less fussy when it comes to variety and quality, I think both are important. This is one of the reasons why we booked a hotel with three al a carte restaurants - so we could have a break from the all-inc buffet if required. However I was pleasantly surprised! There was tons of variety, with a different theme each night. We could both always find something to eat at all 3 meals. By no means is the food Michelin star standard, but we did not expect or require this. The quality isn't the best but it is catering for the masses! Whilst the restaurant did require a bigger selection of fruit, there were impressive live cooking stations, which we visited frequently. Every night, a different meat was cooked outside on the barbeque - just delicious, we always went back for seconds. There is also a permanent pasta station where the chef asks you what ingredient you would like and cooks it fresh in just a couple of minutes, meaning you could always have a delicious bowl of pasta when the theme wasn't to your taste. The restaurant staff were also fantastic, we were pretty much served by the same waiter every day who remembered our drinks orders and made sure we were always topped up. From what I gathered the wine is boxed so wasn't the best - but it never stopped me drinking it!! As i said we went with an open mind - but experienced higher quality than what we had expected. Fussy eaters would probably find fault but we were relatively happy. We only visited one al a carte restaurant - the Italian, and had a lovely romantic dinner. The restaurant inside is beautiful and the waiter took great care to ensure we had a lovely dinner! When we return we hope to visit the seafood and oriental restaurants too as we heard good reviews from other guests.
The only other thing we weren't looking forward to was the hassle of the salesman around the pool area. We had read negative reviews about this at the sharm grand plaza and at many other hotels, and just assumed its part and parcel of holidaying in Egypt. I have to say we did experience this on the first couple of days, as the salesmen know you're new, and target you to book trips and spa packages etc. Not once did I feel uncomfortable during any of these chats, some took longer to get the message than others but generally if you say you have already booked or just give firm no thank you, they will leave you be. We generally built up some friendly banter with some of these salesmen, but they never hassled us once we'd given our answer.
That leads me on to talk about our days at the Sharm Grand Plaza as a whole. We couldn't have asked for more. Ahmed (sorry I don't know if I spelled that right) with the southern comfort sun hat ensured that we had our favourite sun loungers every day! This was fantastic as they were just off the path to our room, a couple of steps back from the pool and they were in the sun and had an umbrella if needed. We didn't even end up sunbathing on the beach because we had it so good. Although the beach is so close that we often took a stroll along it and down the jetty for a bit of snorkelling - which is just incredible! As a young couple we enjoyed the loud summery music at the main pool as it created an atmosphere throughout the day. Don't be fooled, its not all head banging dance tunes as some reviews say, they cater it to the time of the day, eg. in the afternoons (at the same time as yoga) they would play lovely chilled out music which helped us take an afternoon nap! The pools are all lovely and well maintained, so its pretty easy to find a spot that you like whether you're a family / couple / group of friends.
The heat takes a while to get used to, so in our first couple of days we'd often be up and down to the Luna Bar by one of the smaller pools. We watched, as our holiday continued, the bar develop in terms of its amenities. We found out that Zara had campaigned for a number of things requested by British guests which were being put into action continuously. These things made every day even better. Ice cream was more regular, there was a small buffet that was made permanent at the bar which included salads, chips, gorgeous fried fish and a few sandwiches. This was great for the couple of days that we didnt want to get dressed to go and sit in the restaurant but just wanted to chill outside in the sun with some friends that we had met at the hotel. The only thing I can say in regards to this is: MORE FRUIT PLEASE! Another thing that we loved about this bar was that the animation team held a quiz here every afternoon. We loved to have a crack at this with a cold afternoon pint so thanks 'Ginger' Dylan and Kelly!
The animation team were WONDERFUL! Always full of energy despite the heat and the long days! I participated in a bit of water aerobics which was fun, and helped me let go a bit - especially with the dancing at the end (no inhibitions allowed), but there was lots of other activities going on, especially for those that like to stay active on holiday. I'm normally not one to sit and watch evening entertainment, but the evening shows were actually pretty good. Moreover, its great to see how the animation team build relationships with guests of all nationalities, they really do care that you're having a good time. We went on a couple of nights out with the animation team which were both great fun! They were both beach parties funnily enough. The first is organised by the hotel - we bought tickets for £10 and didn't really know what to expect but we actually had a ball! The was a great fire show, a raffle which was a cute addition, and then just a massive party with a foam pit (which I didn't go into but the boys loved it!). The music and atmosphere were amazing, and it was definitely one of our best nights at the hotel. The second night out was an external night at a beach club down the road, this was also tons of fun, the club itself is gorgeous, and Kiss radio were dj-ing which meant the atmosphere again was electric.
Generally, we had fun each night at the hotel, our only wish was that the all inclusive aspect stopped at midnight and not 11. We felt that this was quite early for some people so the evening atmosphere would end quite abruptly. Of course there is the option to pay for drinks, but not many seemed to do this. We would often drink in NUTS bar as it was English only until 11. Mohammed the barman in NUTS was fantastic, he would surprise me with some great cocktails and we really enjoyed getting to know him. Generally, we would carry on drinking until midnight, with friends that we met at the hotel. On the whole this bar was a great place to get chatting to people. We preferred it to Lunar bar (which is the pool bar outside) due to the air con and the fact there were no mosquitoes!
Generally we had a fantastic stay at the Sharm Grand Plaza which was most of all made by the staff who couldn't do enough for you. We weren't afraid to tip as we know this is how staff in Egypt make most of their living. We tipped a couple of pound every few days to a small handful of staff that looked after us. Its not a lot and this is not because we felt obliged to but because we wanted to and appreciated their fantastic service. Some people may not agree with tipping to receive good service. At the Sharm Grand plaza good service seems to be ingrained in its ethos. However I can say we received AMAZING service and we believed that this deserved a small tip.
A young couple looking for a chilled, romantic holiday but loved the fact that there was so much interaction at the hotel. We met so many lovely people and will definitely be returning to this hotel!
