“Mixed review - group of 9. Wouldn't return”
Reviewed 9 July 2012

A mixed review:

I always try and write an honest review. We're a normal semi-detached-house family who saved all year to go on our one holiday. Yeah we all had dicky tummy for a few days but it's not food poisoning in most cases but due to water / pool/ bad hygiene - some tourists have DISGUSTING hygiene routines.

Read on for our review:

Just had a 2 week stay at the AA Amwaj in a group of 4 mature adults, 3 young adults and one 11 year old.
All in all it was a good fortnight. The hotel is in every respect very similar in standards and amenities to almost every other (alleged 4/5 star) Sharm resort. In british standards, it's an average 3 star.
The BIG downer which as e-commerce owners really got on our nerves, was the wi-fi or should i say severe lack of it. There were around 5/6 routers all over the resort but the claim of "Wi-fi in every room" is nothing short of a lie. We could sometimes connect in the Soweto bar but certainly never in the room once - and we had 4 rooms to try it in. The staff came out one day and fiddled around with the routers but i suspect that it's just a case of poor coverage with their routers and not enough bandwidth to go around if and when you did get a signal in the bar.

Food and drink: Perfectly acceptable considering the hotel when full is catering for 1200 guests. The food is varied, warm and palatable. There was always a good choice of varied dishes but one thing was missing for the kids - chips. They didn't ever seem to have them at meal times other than at the poolside snack bar.

Staff: Very hardworking. We made some great Egyptian friends. Fadel, Ismail, Hamed to name but a few. All staff worked very hard at pleasing us (not just at earning tips) and only on a few occasions did the service seem anything other than it should have been but they were really trivial instances. Not worth expanding on :)

Pool: Very good. Cleanliness is pretty good and the pool at it's deepest was shallow enough for my 11 year old to touch the bottom and therefore make me more comfortable about her wanting to go and splash on her own. No lifeguards are on duty.

Kids club: This was pretty abysmal - i'm glad my daughter didn't want to use it. It consists of 1 dilapidated shack near the beach that in all honesty i wouldn't have felt safe leaving my dog in - never mind a child. The "kids club" offered no timetable of activities and nobody ever once tried to recruit my daughter for any activities. When we asked where is was, we were just pointed to the hut. No reps told us about it.

Animation team / evening entertainment:

Oh boy do the animation team work hard and they are great young girls and guys. BUT, is it entertaining, NO. It's utter bilge - certainly in the evening anyway. It normally consisted of VERY random routines of miming to various songs in wigs. Never any actual cabaret or singing or shows of any quality, just odd mime acts that were sometimes unfathomable. DON'T go here expecting evening entertainment of any kind. The "shows" lasted maximum of an hour but there were never any acts on other than the same animation team doing mime acts. Really poor!! On the upside though, no bingo!!

All in all we had a good time, mainly thanks to the staff that went all the way to ensure our satisfaction. When we did have niggles, the staff including the reception assistant manager Ahmed, did their best to help us out BUT as we'd gone with a small child and on the basis of being able to use this advertised Wi-fi in every room and have some entertainment, we WOULDN'T return here or recommend it for anyone with small children or anyone in true need of a reliable internet connection.

A typical Sharm resort - when we went though, the English were the minority. If this bothers you, book a resort that does UK Exclusive. Personally, it didn't bother us at all - they were all good fun.

This is a fantastic Hotel for familes, couples and singles. Sometimes It makes you embarrased to be Brisitish when you see some of the unfortuante comments in the so called ' bad review0s'. I think what hapens here is some of these guys get a stomach bug which is almost certainly down to their own poor hygiene standards and then they blame the Hotel.

I have stayed at the AA Amwaj and other hotels in this resort many times. The Amwaj rates up there with the best. Remember people 5* in Egypt is not the same as 5* in London or many other capital cities arou8nd the world. Notwithstanding that, this is a fanastic hotel for an excellent value for money holiday experience.

Good hotel, needs a bit of refurbishment work though... Good food, nice staff, entertainment is not the best, but keeps the kids busy.

I am unsure of the previous experience of some people who have written a review on this hotel but to state it's 'amazing' baffles me. We spend a lot of time reading reviews on hotels prior to booking and I really would not want others to be mislead in to booking this hotel, like we were! The hotel itself at first glace is ok, however you scratch the surface and it’s a tired, dirty and in need of a complete revamp. I will try and give an honest overview of the various aspects:

Lobby - To give credit where credits due this part of the hotel is quite nice. It's air conditioned and nicely decorated. No complaints

Room - The room was large but in need of a complete upgrade. There was exposed electrical wires coming out of the lamp, we were given two single beds (despite booking a double) and the bathroom was, well disgusting!! There was mould on all the silicone sealant around the bath and the bath was stained a dirty brown orange colour. This could not be resolved with cleaning (so no blame there) it literally needs ripping out and starting again.

Food;

Buffet area - My girlfriend is a fussy eater and literally could not find anything to eat. I will literally eat anything (proving it does not contain meat) and I could not find anything to eat. As a veggie I would of been happy with salad for the week but they used raw cabbage instead of lettuce in the salad bar? All other salad is covered in a range of weird and horrible dressings and herbs, it was really nasty stuff. I would say the food in here will sustain you but don't expect to enjoy it! I got pretty bad food poisoning and as to this point had only eat in here it must of been the source (I think the scrambled eggs). The waiters are a little over eager to remove plates, cups and glasses from your table. Efficient I hear you say, not when you want another drink and there are no other cups/glasses available for you to get a refill. On numerous occasions we went without a drink because of this. On one occasion I informed a member of staff that there were no plates for the food and he said 'ok' and continued to just stand there.

Italian - Good, definitely recommend

Grounds;
The pools are quite nice and a good size. However, the tiling around the pool is in a pretty poor state. They are a porous material and are all pitted, it just looks shabby.

The grounds around the main pool are well kept and look nice. However attention needs to be given elsewhere. There was litter in the garden near our room which was there from the day we arrived to the day we left. Around all other pools litter is also a problem and they seemed to do nothing to tidy up. One day i witnessed the pool guard in the aqua park finish his fag, drop it on the floor, stamp it out and leave it. That kind of demonstrates just how this place operates.

I am convinced they water the gardens at the front of the hotel with untreated sewerage water. That is the only explanation for the smell that is about every time the sprinklers are on, it literally takes your breath away

Bars - In the main bar (24hr) if you were lucky you get a dirty plastic half pint glass. On all other occasions you would get a tiny little disposable plastic glass. This is fine if you want a swift slurp to clench you thirst but if you are trying to enjoy a drink the constant trips to and from the bar are just not on! I would say these glasses contain about 150ml (half a can of pop). Some of the bar staff look utterly pissed off that you have the cheek to ask them for a drink!

Sowetto bar - Nice and very attentive staff. However this is only all inc 2200 - 0000 so is empty most of the time and a complete waste of a nice area.

Facilities:

Gym - Ok. Only really enough room for two at a time but as it was empty most of the time no problem there. For those who don't want their training to suffer the dumbbells only go up to 22kg's, so a little limited.

Pool - Don't bother. The balls roll to one corner on there own accord. The cue had no tip and as a consequence has heavily damaged the white ball so this would bounce down the table with all the grace of a boulder. The pockets are ripped so expect a loud bang as the balls slam against the tiles

Table tennis - as to be expected, no complaints.

Tennis - did not play but court looked ok. The surface is sand so how it plays I am unsure?

Access - we are able bodied but some poor chap in a wheel chair suffered the mis dignity of being carried up and down the stairs in his wheel chair as they have no lifts or ramps. If you have limited mobility then you will struggle as it is on multiple levels

Nabq - bit like the hotel a bit of a dump really.

If you can get a week in this place for £350 max (inc flights) then you could probably justify the expense just to get the Egyptian sun. Anything more and i would spend the money elsewhere!! I have no axe to grind so this write up is reflective of my experience. I would not recommend this hotel and suggest you book elsewhere. Other couples we met were more damning of this place than us, so we are just simply looking to moan.

We are couple in our early 30's and would suggest Nama Bay if you are going to Sharm. However, if you find a good hotel you will probably be happy to spend your time there, unlike us

just returned from amwaj, not much to complain about, rooms comfty and spotlessly cleaned every day. meals ok, plenty of options, staff friendly , pool areas spacious, tip use the aqua park, less busy, big beach area, plenty of loungers, good snorkling from jetty. all in all enjoyed our two week stay, little tip dont use pharmacist, on site massive rip off, ask at st georges bar at top of drive, only charge pennys unlike the £30 tummy tablets at pharmacists, all in all good resort.

Toilet stank of urine bathroom was OLD, shower is ridiculous (my university halls shower was better than that and thats saying ALOT) although the hotel has only been running for 5 years looks like 50 years. Turned my pillow over a lizard was walking around quite comfortably...YES A LIZARD!

Food is BAD - got really ill stomach problems been 10 days and still has gone.

All inclusive? HELL NO 2 bottles of water a day and drinks well they offer powdered watered down sugar drinks or coke sprite fanta in LITTLE PLASTIC CUPS!

THIS IS NOT A 5 STAR HOTEL - spend extra 100 pound and stay in Sharks bay or Naama Bay. The hotel needs to be burned and rebuilt...
