We only had a brief stop here at Elmina castle on a tour but the grounds are very interesting and certainly demonstrates historical significance. Just outside of the castle is a very large market primarily selling the local fish brought in that day, but as well a wide variety of items both food and household items. Interesting just to walk around and get a flavor of the marketplace. Also worth looking out for on the drive there along the coast are the local fisherman lined up on shore pulling in their very long nets that have been placed out at sea which requires several hours to bring the entire net and its hopeful contents on shore.

we did a guided tour of 1 hour. we have been very impressed by this visit. the true story of the slaves... still shivering hen i think about that. the cells, the way they were treated.it's a piece of human story that must be visited in order to avoid mistakes like these.
good explanations thanks to the excellent guides.

We did a guided tour of 45min and it was very impressive to see the dungeons and the rest of the castle. At the entrance they wanted to charge an extra 25 cedis for taking pictures, but the guides will not properly enforce it on the tour. Beware of touts in the parking area at the entrance; they were fairly pushy and annoying, although the parking area warden told them off.

the coastline at Cape Coast is beautiful. Today this is a place of remembrance of the terrible suffering man continue to inflict on other men. All the guides I have met in Ghana, all young students, or serving their military service, have been very good. This was no exception.

I went to Cape Coast Castle first, and when I went to this one, I immediately liked it better from far away arriving from Cape Coast. Unlike Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle is daily seen with wide open shores, and lagoon next to it with hundreds of fishing boars make it look all the more appealing. Not to mention Fort St. Jago from a hill above. It's quieter than CC Castle also, and the guide is of course very knowledgeable, except for souvenir shop stop here and there. If you only have time to go to one of two, I will recommend you choose Elmina and its castle.
