“Fantastic Food”
Reviewed 28 December 2013

My BF and a couple of friends dinned at the Mayoka Lodge last night.
It's the most amazing little get away on the island, perfect for a couples retreat.
Try the SURF & TURF Sushi rolls, they were the best. Staff is super friendly and we had a fantastic time.

See you soon!

Travelling with another family, we read about Mayoka Lodge's restaurant, Frangiapani, and decided to make a reservation for dinner. What a great choice! Chef Brad's food was comparable to any five star restaurant in Toronto or New York. The layering of flavours, the size of the portions, the freshness of the food made for an outstanding experience. My husband's jerk shrimp was among the best he has ever tasted. We went at night, so we didn't capture the true beauty of the views that this hotel has to offer. While we didn't stay at the lodge this time, I would have to say that Barbara and John's hospitality would be something to come back for.

The jerk shrimp continues to be one of our most popular dishes! Thank you for your kind words and yes come earlier next time to enjoy the new open air bar in the daylight or the sunset deck for one of the best sunsets on the island!

We were looking for a special place to have our last meal on Roatan and followed the advice of an ex-pat couple that we met on a dive boat. Frangipani at Mayoka Lodge. We were warmly welcomed as we walked into the charming main house that serves as the hub of the lodge. Out the back door, an intimate infinity edge pool was perched on a hill overlooking the water and native vegetation. Just beautiful. Past the pool was a romantic patio with only seven guest tables. On the other side of the pool, a small bar and lounge. We were greeted at our table by Chef Ben who took us on a tour of several wooden decks that had been built into the hillside, each offering unique views and private spots to relax, read a book or have a drink. We wished we had arrived earlier for a cocktail at sunset. Our waiter was extremely helpful and friendly and the owners, John and Barbara, made sure that we were comfortable and had everything that we needed. I would say that we were smitten before we even had food, but then came falling in love.

Chef Ben guided us with suggestions and paired wines with every course. He had found the largest prawns I'd ever seen at market that day and made a special appetizer preparation for us. Everything that we ate was excellent and obviously fresh. Simply put, you just have to try Frangipani no matter where you stay on the island.

After dinner, John and Barbara gave us a nice tour of the open suites, each beautifully decorated, well appointed and unique. We then all returned to the patio for a last glass of wine (or two). Since we were the last diners, Ben joined us too, and we all got to know each other a bit before we had to head out. Lust had turned to love, and then to a comfortable relationship. We don't often repeat vacations, but will will return to Roatan and this time we will stay at Mayoka Lodge.

Having been to Roatan a dozen times over the past 6-7 years, I can honestly say that Mayoka provides the friendliest, authentic luxury, and down to earth accomodations on the island. The managers, John and Barbara are like long lost friends, that will help you with anything from travel logistics, to restaurant recommendations, to simply having a rum and a cigar with you after dinner. Speaking of eating, the restaurant, although pricy, is the best on the island, hands down, no questions asked! The rooms are nice, nothing spectacular, the suites on the other hand are amazing, and full of real Honduran luxury. If you want fancy shower sprays, and typical cookie cutter "modern rooms" look elsewhere. When you package the amazing view, the amenities, the friendly staff, the food and the overall vibe that Mayoka puts out there, it is simply hard to find anything better on Roatan. I have looked and can not find it.

Room Tip: Mayoka Suite has a view that is priceless. There new rooms (forget the names) are right on the beach...

We unfortunately could only spend one night in Roatan, and I am just thankful we were lucky enough to have found Mayoka. We initially hesitated due to the price compared to other hotels nearby, but make no mistake, this was easily the best money we spent on our whole vacation. When you factor in the incredible amenities, 5 star breakfast, and priceless setting, you realize how worth it this place is. I could have spent all day in the infinitiy pool overlooking the jungle/beach. Instead we took advantage of the free snorkel gear and ocean kayaks and ventured off to see some dolphins and coral. John and Barbara were great hosts, and good company too. Their staff was attentive and helpful, and we really enjoyed lazing around the property. The lodge itself was beautiful, and the views even more so. Staying for just one night was really the only problem...

Room Tip: We stayed in the two smallest and cheapest suites. And we thought they were absolutely incredibly.

My husband and I stayed at Mayoka Lodge for two weeks in August 2013 and it is better than any of the reviews could say. It starts with Barb and John. The two of them are interesting people in their own right and have so many connections on the island you can satisfy any desire. They are also great for a drink and a chat. Then you have Angel (who will cut you some fresh coconut if you ask), Glenn (who makes some mean cocktails and might just give you some great tips re local cuisine if you ask), Edita (makes the most awesome Baleadas on the island), Rosa (makes the best Pestalidos on the island), Kelly (who knows how to catch some serious lionfish), Ben (chef de cuisine at Frangipani), Elizabeth (sous chef and woman of many skills) and everyone else who makes your stay at the lodge as satisfying as you could want. There is the palapa for some daytime yoga, the infinity pool for a quick dip (or long day of reading and sipping cocktails poolside), the sunset terrace that provides amazing views all day long (not just at sunset), the kayaks and snorkeling supplies, the TV room, pool table...and the list goes on. It is true when people say you leave feeling like family. We were there for our five-year anniversary and couldn't have picked a better place to stay or better people to share it with. We rarely return to places we've traveled, but are now trying to figure out when we can get back. We miss everyone!

Room Tip: The Royal Suite really is the best with its 180 degree view of the ocean and the infinity pool. The...

My husband and I stayed at Mayoka for a week in Aug. It was suggested by a friend of ours that lives on the island. We traveled most of the island and never saw a better spot. We will definitely go back. The food, service, and view is amazing.
