“Fantastic week”
Reviewed 22 June 2014 via mobile

What a great week at the resort. We have been coming to AKR for 20 years and it only gets better as time goes by. This is a great resort for great diving. The food is great, the staff is great and the accommodations are great.
The interactions with their guests are great with their BBQ cookout, crab race, dolphins. Etc
Will always go back
The only problem you will have is at the airport because it is so packed because everyone is trying to leave.

Splendid week on Anthony's key! The positives include the following :
The Key superior rooms were comfortable, and spacious with waterfront views. The dive boats were spacious and comfortable, although on boat lavatories would have been appreciated. These people know ECO- Friendly ! Their dolphin experience included some getting acquainted time with penned dolphins. The dolphins were then released into the open ocean to play with us. The choice to go back was up to them at the end. Some ( rescues) go back, others choose to stay free. Seaworld could take a lesson here . The diving is excellent. The reef itself is beautiful, although the variety of fish is better elsewhere. Customer service in ALL areas was excellent. Those deserving special mention include dive master Jeremy, boat captain Leo, Selase, and Perry at the restaurant, and Yolanda. Other activities ( picnic. on Maya. key, with Mayan ruins and wildlife preserve) and barbecue night were excellent. There is also a camp for kids, so quite family friendly.
The down sides ? Our group did experience some " Montezuma's revenge" . In. addition, as with any tropical vacation there were bugs. to contend with. Bug spray is an essential , and ants are frequent visitors.
Cost ??? excellent for what is included. would I go again ? Absolutely.

Room Tip: stay in Key superior rooms. Rom on the main key are NOT airconditioned!

We started our 10 night stay on Roatan at Anthony's Key Resort. The shuttle picked us at the airport and with in 20 minutes we were at check in having a rum drink. Everything was well explained. We had lunch and then shuttled over to the key to room 41. Great view and a comfortable hammock to view the sunset. We quickly changed and hit the pool then over to the snorkel spot on the island. Great way to start our first day.

We ventured up to the dining room for dinner and drinks. There was a band playing, great vibe. Off to comfortable beds and air conditioning for a great night sleep after a long travel day.

We did the snorkel package, you don't have to dive to enjoy the reefs around Roatan. The snorkel boat had a small group. Nice boat and guide. Saw lots of fish, turtles, lobster and amazing coral formations. The sea is pretty much flat, it's like going boating on a lake.

After our morning snorkel we used the kayaks and paddled around the keys and checked out the dolphins. Then it is was off to enjoy the pool and the bar before lunch. We pretty much repeated the second day like the first. We only stayed two nights and checked out and went to Infinity Bay. We came back the next day so our daughter could do the dolphin trainer for a day. She loved it!

Some tips, like other reviews bring bug spray! The sand fleas/ no see ums were brutal. Use the kayaks, really fun. If Anthony's Key is the only place your staying, take a day trip to West Bay, super nice beach and good places to eat and drink. Also a day trip to West End and go stand up paddle boarding, really fun.

We spent a week at the resort diving 3-4 times a day (or less, if you wanted). We took advantage of many amenities the resort had to offer - the diving, shark dive, dolphin snorkel, canopy tour, kayaking around the island. I'd make the following recommendations: 1. It's super-humid there in June, and for us, it was nice to have air conditioning at night; 2. Bug spray is a must. Little no see-ums will bite you on the island; 3. Meals are good but it's nice to have a snack between the first and second dives - wish we would've brought more snacks; 4. Sunscreen and bug spray are very expensive on the island - best to bring this with you. 5. If you are slightly prone to motion sickness, I recommend bringing dramamine.

Food is good and filling, drinks hit the spot. They have family camp during the summer so if you have little ones five years or older they will put them in a week of snorkeling and other fun camp activities. I'd recommend the BBQ night and picnic day - they're a lot of fun and worth the time. The shark dive is really neat. I was originally nervous about it, but I'd highly recommend. The entire staff was extremely friendly. The resort is very safe. We went into town one day and it was fun. We had an outstanding trip and would highly recommend this resort!

Room Tip: The island has air conditioning. Having to 'wait' for the boat isn't a wait - they can...

Had a great time at this resort during a cruise stopover. The dolphin swim and snorkel was a great package and the prices for photos were actually affordable in comparison to other places. The people were nice, but the dolphin trainers were exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly.

We loved Anthony's Key Resort. The grounds are beautiful. and the resort features over water bungalows. The restaurant and bar are great. The diving and snorkeling are both fantastic. Loved the dolphins. Will definitely return!

If you are planning on visiting Roatan you will not be disappointed if you stay at AKR! This was my 2nd trip to Roatan and my 1st to AKR. I went for a dive vacation and wanted the all inclusive option ( dive package of 3 dives a day, lodging & 3 meals ). I did not travel with a group but had no issue finding the friendly host at the airport who shuttled me to the resort in no time. My brother was arriving later that day but I was relaxing in my room within the hour of arriving.

I was greeted with a welcome rum punch and a lunch before heading to our room. Such hospitality was a welcome relief after a long period of travel. Our room was located on the Key overlooking the ocean. It was clean and roomy with a huge porch and 2 hammocks ( which were used daily ).

During my stay I was greeted daily by the Happy staff who truly seem to enjoy their jobs. This alone says a Great deal about the owners of AKR...40 yrs in running and still going strong. This in direct opposite to other resorts on the island who have changed management and degraded in their service ( 2nd visit and would not recommend the 1st resort that I stayed at 7 yrs ago ).

You will experience outstanding meals that include a breakfast of fruits, cooked to order eggs, french toast, pancakes, and even a " Honduran breakfast " was on the menu. Lunch was always a selection of soup ( made special each day ), salad ( different each day ), and a choice of fish, chicken, & a meat ( pork or beef ) entree. Seriously, the lunch left you saying " how can they top this at dinner "? However they did! Dinner was a different soup, salad and entree's that included a chef prepared gourmet selection! Oh yes, dessert was served at lunch and dinner. Note that this is not buffet style ( except for Island night & lunch at Maya Key ), you are served by waiters who are there to assure you are satisfied and allow you to realize you are indeed on vacation :)

One evening is " Island night ", located on the Key and besides the outstanding meal there is traditional Honduran dancing by the locals, a limbo contest, and crab races ( you get your own crab to race ). Another day is lunch on Maya Key which is a longer boat ride ( if you are diving ) around the west point of Roatan. Here you can enjoy the privacy of the key where they have reconstructed a Maya ruin and care for a variety of animals that have been rescued ( jaguars, monkeys, bobcats etc ). A learning experience if you decide to visit.

Now for the diving ( to me the Best part ). AKR visits dive sites that are located to the North side of the island which is more westwardly. Note that there are dive sites ALL around Roatan both on the windward and leeward side and weather conditions change depending on what time of year you visit. The boat rides are 3 - 10 minutes long..quick enough to avoid sea sickness if you are prone. We experienced numerous turtles, eels ( moray - spotted, chain & green and garden eels ), stingrays, and eagle rays. Dove 2 outstanding wrecks ( Odyssey and El Aguila ) and 2 night dives ( lobsters, crabs and octopus - staying around long enough to video ).There is a DC plane located in the Key that is nice to visit as a shore dive and can be used for navigation.

We dove to our hearts content...33 total for 10 days! Not missing any dives to weather.

Highly recommend you attend the free Fish ID Awareness presentation ( presented by PADI instructor Kim ). This informative presentation tells your about the marine life you will see and some of their behavioral aspects. Guarantee you will remember and use this information on your dives or even if you plan on snorkeling.

AKR's boat are in outstanding shape, fast, efficient and roomy. At times we had 4 to 14 people on the boat and we were not cramped at all. As a working Divemaster myself I was very pleased with the Instructors, Divemasters, Boat Cpts, and dive shop staff We dove with 4 different Divemasters ( Alson, Marvin, John & Sherwin ) and all were knowledgeable, proficient, environmentally conscious, and most importantly - Safe!

If you plan to visit Roatan you will need bug spray wherever you stay ( need DEET ). The sand fleas or no see ums can be a nuisance and depending on your susceptibility, could make for an " itchy " experience ( everyone react differently to these bugs ). Others have mentioned the stairs to the restaurant. Yes, there are a few however you will be delighted to enjoy your meals overlooking the breathtaking ocean that has some welcome breezes.

Other plusses. The internet service is Outstanding. AKR generates their own electricity and no need to worry about taking a converter. Other vacationers to AKR include singles, couples and groups and it was quite easy to meet and socialize at meals and diving. They offer dolphin encounters, zip lining and even a shark dive. All and all you cannot top this variety of experiences. Check out the following video ( Vimeo - http://vimeo.com/97032290 & http://vimeo.com/96856741 )
