I stayed at Mariposa Lodge for the third time this past June. I am the faculty leader of a group of students from Eastern Mennonite University and I love Mariposa Lodge. The owners are very accommodating and allowed me to make the reservation even before our numbers were firmly set. The staff is great and helped me make needed contacts for the group. I love the location in West End and the size of the rooms (I actually prefer the non-AC rooms because they are larger). I always make use of the kitchen for many meals during the week. Since we had a larger group we also made use of Mariposa Pequeña which was perfect. This has to be the best place for the price in West End.

This place is very good for the price. Its not luxury hotel but has more of a self catering appartment feel. The best rooms are on the upper deck without the ac. They a large with high ceilings and big ceiling fans. The usually come with two double beds, full kitchen, bathroom, fridge, tv, free water and free movies. Feels like you have your own place. The location is just about perfect. Set back a short walk from the main street and beach. The staff are friendly and accesable. The cleaner does a great job every day. The only thing is that the wifi is weak. They need to buy a booster.

Great location, in the middle of town, and a little back from the main road. Nice sized rooms, including kitchen, living area with separate bedroom and bathroom. Free water and fridge. Very clean and well maintained. Staff were generally friendly.

My only and biggest issue with Mariposa was/is that on their website/booking forms they clearly state that they take credit card payments. However, when we arrived we were told that they would NOT except payment by a credit card, and we had to pay in cash. They then said that I had the rest of the day to get the cash to pay for the stay. Very poor customer service. If you don't except credit cards then please say so .... remove this from your website and all other communications so there are no surprises on check-in!

This is a bit awkward. On the one hand you have to assume the customer is right, yet on the other after questioning my staff no-one can remember this happening.

Of course we do take credit cards. In the event of a machine failure or power outage we can still run a card the old fashioned way on a paper voucher and phone-in authorization.

I do apologize for any misunderstanding and we will work more closely with reception to ensure everyone understands the importance of clear communication.

A friend and I stayed for 4 nights at Mariposa Lodge based on the recommendation in Lonely Planet, and we were not dissapointed. While it is not the cheapest option in the West End, you get a lot of value for your money here. The hotel has several rooms in the huge 3-story main house, and 2 smaller outbuildings with a couple of rooms each. We were in one of the smaller buildings. For $45 US a night, we had a room with A/C, hot water showers, and a small kitchen area with fridge, sink, microwave, toaster, and coffee maker (utensils and dishes included). There is also a TV in every room, and although there is no cable, reception has hundreds of movies for guests to borrow free of charge. The grounds of the hotel are lovely and it appears that every room has a porch with a hammock. All of the staff that we encountered were incredibly friendly and helpful with any questions that we had. On the map in Lonely Planet this hotel looks like the hotel is quite far from the beach and out of the way, but it is really just a 2 minute walk to the beach at Half-Moon Bay and a 1 minute walk to the main road where all the restaurants, stores, etc. are located. If I returned to Roatan I would definitely stay here again.

Stayed at the Mariposa Lodge over New Years and even though it seems like a year ago, I still have great memories of being there. Did lot's of diving and loved being able to come back to our rooms between dives to make some soup or just relax out on the private back deck in the hammock. The staff were welcoming and helpful especially with making diver reservations. The town is easy to access on foot and has everything you need for a laid back vacation including some great beach side bars, shops for trinkets and t-shirts and some pretty good and not too expensive restaurants. The roast chicken place was amazing!

Room Tip: Pretty sure they are all good, but we had room 5 and loved it.

I stayed at the Mariposa Lodge for a week and loved it. Nice place with a hammock on the porch of every room. Room came with a microwave and a fridge and the AC worked great. The room was comfortable and the location is great. Only about a 100 yards from the main street so it is centrally located to everything but you don't hear any of the noise.

Room Tip: I had a room with AC but I think that even without it I would have been totally comfortable.

We have stayed in a couple of places in Roatan, and despite Mariposa being a bit set-back from the street without a waterview/access -- we still prefer Mariposa and the leafy canopy with a short walk to the beach vs. being eaten alive by sandflies or standed on coral-cutting shorelines (still) far from sandy beaches... We have stayed in Mariposa's upper suites with private kitchen/tv/bath, which gave us lots of room to spread out and the benefit of cooking some meals for ourselves (considering restaurant prices in Roatan have skyrocketed!) We have also stayed in the more economical shared kitchen/bath group bedrooms on the ground level. All spaces are clean and well kept. Furnishings are basic but comfortable. The movie selection is great, and hammocks abound! There is an occasional rooster crow (but this happens everywhere).... Mariposa is a solid choice for accommodations in West End.

Room Tip: Consult in advance re: options and budget..and they will do their best to accommodate you!
