“Luxury villas right on the water just outside West End Village”
Reviewed 3 June 2013

We stayed here from May 18 to June 1 in a brand new 2 bedroom/2 bathroom ground floor villa. The location is excellent. The villas look out at the Caribbean Sea with crystal clear water and sunset views. The villa is new and the AC worked great, the furniture was new and very comfortable. The kitchen and bathrooms are modern and the free Wi-fi and cable TV worked well. TVs in the living room and bedroom, plenty of closet space, new washer/dryer, and a new safe for storing valuables in the master bedroom. The ground floor is nice for easy access to the pool and beach. We did get bothered by the sand flies this year, but they are pretty much on every beach in Roatan. Bring your insect repellent. The villas are now managed by Roatan Life and they were very good to work with--Mark Flanagan at Roatan Life did a great job getting us set up and stayed in touch throughout our 2 week stay. This is a great place to stay in Roatan!

After a long illness and recovery, my wife needed a vacation. She found Villas Del Playa and that was that. We dealt directly with one of the owners, Kathleen. She super to deal with from the very start. We rented the ground floor, two bedroom and had way more room then we needed. All the appliances and furnishings are new. The place is done very tastefully, very comfortable. With the day ground's keeper and the nightwatchman, we were always at ease. In fact, Roatan felt very comfortable and safe. A couple of restaurants we suggest: for that night out the Argentinian is awesome. Also highly recommended is the Rotisserie Chicken. We enjoyed them both.......but to be honest (and we ate out all nights but one) all the food at all the places we dined was great. We walked everywhere with one exception, a water taxi ride to West Bay. Just before our stay, Roatan Life took over the management responsibilities and they were very responsive to our needs. We also had the good fortune of having Krystal, the outgoing site manager, next door. She was very helpful. The highest recommendation I can give to both Villas Del Playa and Roatan is we will be back.

My family of 4 stayed at Villas del Playa in March of 2013. First, we were a bit reluctant to take our two small children to Honduras based on all of the things we'd read about the relative lack of safety in the country. Our experience was that Roatan is distinctly different than the mainland and we felt safe throughout our time on the island.

Villas del Playa is not the least expensive accommodation on the island, but it is certainly a very, very nice place. We've traveled extensively, and this is one of, if not the, nicest place we've ever rented. We had the luxury of staying on the third floor (penthouse), which offered 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, washer/dryer, full kitchen, flat-screen TVs and anything else you could have wanted for a comfortable stay.

The views were spectacular.

However, the highlight of the property was the private rooftop pool/BBQ/lounging area that must have been 1500 square feet. It was truly amazing.

We enjoyed it so much that we extended our stay.

A few other notes for first-time visitors:
* Crystal, the caretaker, is fantastic. She's American and is very knowledgeable about the island and is very helpful without being intrusive. She helped make our stay very positive.

* There are two other staff who help out every day. The first is the groundskeeper. He speaks little English, but works his tail off to keep everything looking sharp. The second is the night watchman, who was also great.

* Location -- ideally located at the edge of West End and on the main route for water taxis to West End, one of the best beaches in Roatan. You can walk to many, many restaurants/bars and there's plenty to do.

This is truly a luxury property for an island as remote as Honduras, and if you're looking in this price range you will not be disappointed.

Jack and Kathleen (the owners) happened to be there when we were vacationing, and they are equally helpful and conscientious. They are experienced property managers and know what it takes to run a first-rate operation.

The only criticisms I have is that there were a couple of small things needing repair (cabinet handles, cabinet panels on the rooftop terrace, ceiling fans out of balance, etc) that probably should have been addressed. Considering that they have only had the property for 10 months, and have been working hard to get it in top shape, this was not an issue for us.

We would definitely return to Villas del Playa if we went to Roatan in the future.

Room Tip: If you want to spoil yourselves, get the third-level penthouse. You won't regret it.

My girlfriend and I needed to get out of the cold in NY for a while and we were both looking for a quite, relaxing few days. We are both Fitness instructors (me Yoga, her Pilates) so we were also interested in someplace that had activities but wasn't a crazy spring break. We had read about Roatan but honestly did not know much about it.

So, after talking with friends and reading on Tripadvisor and other places we decided to try Villas del Playa - and we are so glad we did.

We arrived in Roatan and Krystal was right there to pick us up (Krystal oversees the property) - she is amazing, tons of positive energy and just beautiful person to be around. The trip from the airport to Villas Del Playa was a quick trip, it seemed to go by even quicker as we were so excited to be there.

We got to the Villas and were impressed with how modern, clean and updated they were. We stayed in a the mid-level unit and it was beautiful l (there are 6 units in total, two on each floor) however it was more space than we needed as it was just us two girls. We quickly changed into our bikini's and went down to the pool (that is right on the beach). Krystal came to check on us periodically, but there was nothing more that we needed, warm sun, a beautiful beach and a view that seemed to go on forever.

After laying out the rest of the day we decided to explore some local restaurants - Krystal knew everyplace in the area and steered us to an amazing local restaurant right on the beach. The food was great and by the end of dinner we were sitting out on the beach having a margarita - it does not get better (except our amazing moonlight swim after dinner)

The following day we slept in and decided to go scuba diving. There is a Scuba diving place a short walk up the beach that Krystal knew. If you like to dive you have to go to Roatan, it was just beautiful.

The remainder of our vacation consisted of laying out by the pool, on the beach and taking short swims in the bath-like warm, deep blue water. Krystal was always checking in on us but never intrusive, did I mention how amazing she is?

The worst part of the trip was having to leave - we experienced pure paradise at Villas del Playa and we can't wait to go back

We stayed in one of the penthouse suites with two other couples and had a great week. Condo is nice and clean with great amenities. View is great and many a morning coffee was consumed in the penthouse overlooking the reef. Krystal was wonderful to work with and is full of information and was very attentive to our needs. Kind of a manager/concierge for us. Short walk to the main town area, but restaurants are as close as right next door. Lobster Pot is right next door and has an awesome lobster omelet. Barefoot Ronnie's, next to that, has a very good menu as well. We also had a steady diet of cinnamon rolls from Rotisserie Chicken! I highly recommend this spot and would recommend you speak with Krys about what you are looking for in your vacation and she will bend over backwards to help you out!

Stayed at VDP for one week from Dec 22-29, 2012.
The units are under new owners and manager and the improvements and service are exceptional. The entire operation has undergone a significant up grade. There are 6 units in VDP.
We stayed in the top-floor 3 bedroom/ 3 bathroom villa which included access to the rooftop. This is the "penthouse" villa and the rooftop includes another full kitchen, a dipping pool, extra bathroom, dining table, bar, and lounge chairs all on a roof with amazing views. The sight is truly spectacular with western exposure for sunsets and vision all the way to the top of Utilla.
The villa was decorated with Tommy Bahama style furnishing and the beds and sofas were very comfortable. The kitchen was well outfitted and we cooked in for Christmas dinner and also used the grill on the rooftop for two cookouts. Plenty of utensils for 6-8 people.

At VDP the view from all the villas is of the Caribbean Sea, with lots of interesting boat activity, the reef and wonderful sunsets. The VDP beach is quiet and very good. You can swim to the reef, but VDP also offers free use of two glass bottomed kayaks so you can paddle out to the reef for great snorkeling (we saw squid and a turtle!) The location of VDP is great and its an easy 5 minute walk into the West End. (Our favorite restaurant in the West End is Cafe Escondido and favorite bars include the Blue Marlin and Sundowners. Best dive shops include West End Divers and Coconut Tree Divers.)

Dealing with the new owners, Jack and Kathleen, was a pleasure and Kathleen answered all my emails promptly and provided great responses to all my questions. Krystal, the manager, lives on site and is easy to deal with and very knowledgeable on things to do on Roatan. She was great to talk with about Roatan and helped with any questions regarding the villa. Krys supplied us with a cell phone and had the WiFi working for our internet connection. The TV in the living room works with a dish and provided decent reception to watch the college bowl games over the holiday. There is also a caretaker during the day and a night security guard. The unit was very clean and the cleaning lady also came to clean half way thru our week.

We had a special Christmas holiday at Villa Del Playa and highly recommend this as the place to stay on Roatan. The 6 unit size, attentive service from owner and manager, great amenities, perfect location, and amazing views are why we highly recommend staying here.

Room Tip: If you have 2-3 couples, by all means take the 3Br/3Ba penthouse villa. The bottom floor 2Br/Ba has...

Krystal was wonderful and helped us tremendously during our stay. The condos were as pictured and only a short walk down the beach to the West End. It was quiet and peaceful there. I saw nothing but beautiful turquoise water from our bed in the penthouse. I loved having the kayaks there so we could paddle out, then snorkel the reef. It should be noted that there is sea grass in the water there and it was not desirable to swim or snorkel directly from the beach there. The beach at the West Bay is much nicer, with crystal clear water, no sea grass, no jelly fish, and good snorkeling. The West Bay is also more crowded with cruise ship passengers and people trying to sell you all kinds of merchandise and services. You will have the beach in front of the villas del playa at the West End all to yourself. The people of Roatan are friendly and speak more Spanish than I thought. ( I had read that it's an English speaking island.) We had a great trip overall and were very grateful to Krystal for making our trip enjoyable.
