“At the end of West End”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2014

Small property- 8 rooms- that includes breakfast, has balconies with hammocks and oceanviews. Its nice to sit out on the balcony and watch the sunset or even watch the full moon go down in the early AM! The bar next door (Titas) can be noisy at night.....But has excellent food for a late lunch or dinner!
If you enjoy a great dive place-(with Stuart & Roger!) which is part of the resort and a small bar (that includes barking dogs at times) plus Sueno Del Mar is one of the few beachfront spots in West End- then you will .enjoy your time! Oh and you can catch the water taxi from the dive dock to West Bay Beach- "my favorite beach"- 5 min water tiaxi ride away! Plus, you can also walk to any place to eat in West End! Small and quaint and comfortable descibes Sueno Del Mar Resort!

Room Tip: I like the second floor for better oceanviews and less bar noise.

My most relaxing vacation ever!

My sister had been here before and knowing I am a frequent traveler for work and stay at nice hotels, she told me to set my expectations low. Little did I know what I was in for.

The property has 8 rooms and the owner lives in an apartment on the property which is on a private stretch of beach. The rooms aren't upscale or fancy but they are clean and comfortable and every one has an unrestricted view of the sunset.

LOCATION
The resort is just outside of West End Village - and situated between West End and West Bay. In my opinion, it makes it the best location on the island. West End is the village is lovely. It is full of small shops, dive/scuba equipment stores, restaurants and bars. So when the cruise ships come to Roatan, the village is overrun with tourists from the ships. If you want to be part of it, great! You are an easy five minute walk. If you want to avoid the cruiseshippers, the property is away from the swarms. Ships come in about 3 days a week so you still have plenty of time to visit the village if you want to avoid the crowds.

West Bay has larger resorts, some casual, some upscale. But having so many properties and a busy beach, it's easy to find people selling crafts on the beach and is the location to sign up for various excursions on the island (although Ray, the owner of Sueno del Mar) can help with that too. The shopping is no where near as good in West Bay as it is in West End!

BEACHES
Ray's property is right on the water and has a private stretch of beach right off the reef. There are some weeds and fish nurseries so that might not be your thing. But if you like snorkeling, you're all set - just swim a bit off the beach and you're on the reef. If what you like to do is sit quietly and soak up the sun or read, this location can't be beat. There is are a few bigger beaches right in West End (a 5 minute walk) that are cleaner and more geared to swimming. And there is a huge resort style beach in West Bay where there are a lot of larger resorts so the beach can get quite busy. West Bay is easily and quickly accessible by a water taxi but you might also convince the resort's dive master to drop you off there if he's headed that way.

FOOD
Ray serves breakfast every day and it's included in your stay. Home cooked and served in his apartment, he always has eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, pancakes, fresh fruit, juice, coffee, etc. If you are not a scuba diver, it's courteous to let the divers eat first so they don't miss the dive boat. The quality of the food is EXCELLENT but not fancy and is served buffet style.

Ray shares his property with Tita who runs one of the most popular bars in West End. Tita's Pink Seahorse is about ten feet away from Ray's building. Tita has some tables and a bar with stools in a grass roof, open air environment about 40 feet from the beach. Her food is also excellent and great value. If you're not into what's on the menu, she will likely fix up something special for you (and has done for me). If you're staying on the property, she will run a tab and you can pay through the resort at the end of your stay. Tita is vivacious and friendly. Her place is open from about 11 to 11 each day. You have to try Tita's monkey lala's. This is the island drink and I had them everywhere but Tita makes them best. The prices are incredibly reasonable.

There are way to many great places to eat in West End than I can mention. But expect great value for your money. It is extremely easy to eat on a budget in West End. We ate at budget places and high end places and had only one disappointment (It was average, not horrible but I have forgotten the name of the place)
- Argentinian Grill, a fabulous place for a nice dinner. Don't dress up. Nice atmosphere, open air, across the road from the water with an unobstructed view. They also set up tables on the beach.
- Rotisserie Chicken, delicious, mouthwatering chicken dinner for about $7. Not fancy but great quality.
- Sundowners, a great bar right on the beach. Wonderful bartenders. Cheap beer. THE place for hockey fans.
- Chapi Catrachas - tiny, a few steps up and nowhere to sit. They serve amazing churizo baleadas. Great place, especially if dining on a budget.
- can't remember the name of the place but every Friday, one restaurant roasts an entire pig. Get there before 5 because it will be all gone if you don't.

We also went to the Vintage Pearl in West Bay. This is a more expensive, nicer restaurant. But again, value for money. Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere and great, friendly service.

ACTIVITIES
This being a dive resort, there is obviously dives going out several times a day. Stuart is the dive master and people come back year after year to dive with Stuart's boat. Snorkelers can also jump on the boat with him. The dive boat goes out a minimum of two times a day (two morning dives) and sometimes goes out for an afternoon and occasional night dive. Stuart has a small dive boat and is able to get to the dive sites before big boats from the large resorts get to the locations.

Also because this is a dive resort, you get some serious divers. It often gets quiet fairly early after dinner because the divers want to rest up. So plan to get lots of sleep! Or you can go into the village and visit one of the many, many bars if you want to stay up late.

Ray does campfires occasionally and there was one night a batch of people played poker at Tita's until the wee hours of the morning.

GETTING AROUND
There really isn't a reason to use a car to get around West End. From Ray's to the far end of the village is about 2km with lots of shops along the way.

Water taxi can get you to West Bay. Negotiate with the owner before you get on the boat. The rate from West End to West Bay could be as low as $4 and as high as $20/person. There are often several boats lined up so just go to the next boat and ask.

Taxis also vary in price. You might want to take a taxi to West Bay if you want to go for a nice dinner or to Coxen Hole if you want to see the city. Again, negotiate before you get in the taxi. We got to Coxen Hole for $12 when we picked up a taxi on the street but could have paid as much as $25/person. If you plan in advance, Ray will arrange a taxi for you with one of his friends and the price will be competitive.

SUMMARY
This is not a posh resort in a posh location. This is a wonderful and cozy guest house in a casual village. It's clean, comfortable and relaxing. You can stay on the resort if you want to avoid the crowds and activities or venture around the island for more exciting stuff. I liked it so much I booked my next trip before leaving. My rating for the room (I'm giving a 3 is to be fair to people who are used to Hilton beds - the beds are comfortable but they are not sky high with big fluffy pillows)

Sueno del Mar is in the perfect location in West End - it is close to the action but not in the middle of it. The rooms were clean and comfortable - all with private balconies with a view of the sea and a hammock to enjoy the view.....ahhhhh. I still dream of that view. Then add to this - The made to order breakfast prepared each morning by Ray. The sea kayaks available whenever. Snorkeling gear to use right off the beach or head out with the dive boat. And Tita's Pink Flamingo where you can get strong drinks, cold beer and lion fish ceviche (and a delicious hamburger too).

A great place to stay.
- All rooms face the the ocean. They are not fancy but they are clean and comfortable.
- Breakfast made by Ray (the owner) is great, and nice to socialize with other guests.
- Location is great - on the edge of West End, so it is fairly quiet part of the street but close to everything.
- Amazing value!
- The only negative point is that the bar is in front of the room on the beach, and it can be quite loud through the afternoon and night (it closes at 10 pm, so things quiet down after that). In general not a big problem, but it can be if you have young children or you want to have a nap during the day.

This is a great place to stay! on the water, nice clean big rooms with nice bathrooms. We had a balcony that faced the water and over looked the volleyball court. this place is at the end of west end and I felt safe the whole time. everything is walking distance. also there little beach bar is perfect little private spot with good eats and tunes. what really made this place though was the workers. the whole staff was extremely friendly and made us feel at home right away. they were very polite and accommodating!! Ray the owner is the coolest and the nicest person in town and everyone knows him. he will help you out with whatever you need! thanks for the good times!

Room Tip: get a room with a view!

This was our first trip to Roatan and had a great time. We picked Sueno Del Mar based on TA reviews and it did not disappoint.

Lots of pros:
- Great location in the quiet part of West End
- Restuarants and bars only few minutes walk
- Made to order breakfasts by Ray, the owner
- The resort is right on the beach, the dive shop is at the hotel, and the dock is just feet from the resort
- Clean rooms with A/C, in room safe, small refrigerator, full ocean view
- No TV or phone in the rooms
- Fantastic diving (more below). Dive sites very close to the resort.
- Package included pick up and drop off from the airport. Manuel was waiting for us when we arrived.
- Tremendous value for the price!
- Tita's Pink Seahorse next door. Perfect for lunch and your surface interval. Great chicken sandwich and blue cheese burgers

Cons
- Spotty internet connection, best connection from the balcony
- Bugs in Roatan (just like Belize). Not a Sueno issue, but bring insect repellant
- A/C just ok

Diving
We did 17 dives during the week (could have done a night dive as well, but we passed). All our dives were with Stuart or Roger. Both were very experienced and knew all the sites well. Stuart is a former Fire Captain and well versed in safety issues, first aid, etc. We only had 4 divers on most dives, but we had a few locals join us on a few of the dives. Our dives averaged about 60-65 minutes, with a few being 75 minutes. Obviously everyone was very good with air consumption. Depth ranged from around 100 (on the wreck) to 20 (above the reef) with most being 40-70 feet. Vis ranged from 50-80 on most days. Water temp was in the high 80's. All dives were drift dives. Most days we had very light to no current, but one day we went to a site called Texas, and the current was ripping. We flew over the reef, and dropped down the wall to get away from the current. There was a different current down the wall, and the current eventually pushed us off. We did our safety stop in the current and ended up several hundred yards from the boat. It took a few minutes for the boat to spot us, but we never felt at risk. That was our shortest dive at 45 minutes.

The reef was very healthy and we saw a lot of turtles, morays, groupers, lobster, crabs, and lion fish on most dives. We saw a couple of spotted eagle rays on one dive as well as a few cuttlefish. The week before a hammerhead was spotted, but we did not see any sharks. We asked Stuart to take us to see lion fish and we went to a sight about 15 minutes from the resort. He speared 3 and brought them back to Tita's, who made ceveche for us (it was really good). On other dives, he speared a few lion fish and the groupers would steal them right off the spear. We had a variety of terrain (reef, wall, canyon, cave) over our dives and overall the diving was excellent.

I had a leaky reg develop during our stay. Stuart had it taken in to a shop in town where they serviced it at no cost (a second stage adjustment was needed). My reg was ready the next morning.

Overall, Sueno was a tremendous value. The resort was nice with a great location, the diving was excellent and we will definitely return.

Room Tip: Bring a nice bottle of wine and sit on the dock at sunset. It is a great view.

Stayed at Sueno in the past and have on-going dives with this hotel and group. The hotel is "sweet", clean, has A/C and is at the quiet end of the road in W.End, yet you are able to walk to all shops/restaurants. Hotel patio overlooks the blue ocean: you can open the curtains and let it all in! I enjoy the diving with an easy-going group with individual attention as needed. Stuart, the divemaster, will guide you or be right by your side per your needs. No hard schedule for the divesites, with their experience, they go where the visibility is the best or known new sitings of underwater life! Diving with Scuba Diving Divas..makes it fun diving with the ladies, although men are always welcome! Sueno seems to cater to us all making it easy and relaxing. Topping it off, we all go to Tita's Restaurant/Bar right on the beach right next store for good food, ambience and drink.

Room Tip: Nice if you have a patio..(they may all have one?) to see that ocean for sunrise/sunset
