Roatan is an amazing place to spend a holiday or longer. Staying at Cocolobo made an amazing experience to be truly unforgettable.

The hotel is situated about 5 minutes walk away from the main drag of West End - dive shop and restaurant road basically. The walk down is through quiet roads and paths where you can see hummingbirds during the day and hermit crabs crawling across the path at night . The location is superb; of the 10 or so rooms, 8 all look out to sea, with the "iron shore" coast only around 50 feet from your balcony/veranda. Some people are not as keen on the iron shore - but it's interesting and offers snorkelling within 50 feet of your hotel, if you're so inclined. The remaining 2 "rooms" are essentially self contained houses - room upstairs and kitchen/bathroom/living room downstairs. All rooms are built from Honduran pine, and inside are comfortably furnished - huge comfortable bed, patio doors out onto a veranda overlooking the sea; you can see the rooms from the website. Overhead fan and aircon is available, although air con is $10 a day if you use all the time (we used the air con very occasionally and the fee was waived). The whole hotel is centred around an open plan bar/dining area looking out to the infinity pool and the sea.

Ron and Bonnie are the hosts - and you would go a long way to find two more genuine, helpful and friendly characters. All requests are immediately catered for with a genuine desire to make sure your stay is made more pleasant. In most cases you don't even have to ask - a family member was ill during our stay, and Bonnie gave her medication, special food, home made yoghurt, and even drove us to a medical centre to get the condition checked out - we didn't ask for any of this you understand; it was offered. Every night after washing the salt and sand off, there was the almost obligatory couple of beers and chats with Ron and Bonnie - that was on evenings when they hadn't laid on barbecues for all the guests, or invited us to go to local bars to sample local music - honestly, you feel like you're visiting family.

As for the island - beautiful. Many people seem to see little other than the reef off the south coast. Take the time to explore - thirty minutes away by car from the beaches at West End and West Bay (which are fairly sparsely covered with Cruise Ship tourists during 5 days a week) you can go inland, see virgin rainforest, see white sand beaches where you are literally the only people on them as far as you can see, see amazing vistas across the island and over to Honduras, swim with Dolphins, and see more of local life beyond the tourist dive shops. If diving is your sole reason for visiting, you're pretty made up as well - the reef maybe not as perfect as it was 10 years ago, or as perfect as the Phillipines, but diving is inexpensive, rewarding, and most importantly easy. We were on island for 14 days in "low" season (read low as temperatures only getting up to the mid nineties, and rain for 15 minutes every other day) and the sea was like a mill pond for about 10 of the days we were there.

Overall, what more can I say - the island is magical, the accommodation and our hosts made it even more special. Go to Roatan, stay in Cocolobo. Simple.

Cocolobo is ideally located close to West End, but yet far enough aay to be quiet. But the best thing of all is Ron and Bonnie, the current managers. They go out of there way to make everyone feel welcome. I can see them becoming close friends as we plan on returning soon !

CocoLobo is a great place to stay in Roatan. It is close to the West End, and West End Divers, where I dive. The rooms are great the ocean view is great. Breakfast is served every morning, and their is a full service bar. There is also a pool on site, The staff, Ron and Bonnie, are really nice people and the value is very good. I'm going back in May, and I know where I will be staying.:-) Try it, you'll love it.

What Ben said?
We originally booked into Cocolobo as it was close to our recommended PADI Dive center “Coconut Tree Divers”. We planned to stay there 4 nights while we completed our PADI certifications. The west village was our preferred location as we wanted a variety of restaurants and shops rather than an all inclusive or resort vacation. During and after our course we explored the other options in Roatan as we were there for 10 days. We literally couldn’t find a place we like better. West Bay has amazing beach and snorkeling but the atmosphere is very resort with staff that seem like they really want to be somewhere else. Cocolobo is conveniently a 10 min walk from the west village with many restaurant options; it’s a quite comfortable eco resort with friendly and helpful hosts Bonnie and Ron.

What Olga said?
At first, I said, Ben's review is much better... and then I said:
We only booked 4 nights of stay, as we figured the location was great: very close to Coconut Tree Divers shop we were getting our open water diver certification and all the restaurants at the west end village. Our plan was to move to west end bay once we were done. When we arrived, Ron, the mngr of Cocolobo, personally picked us up. At the property, we were greeted by his charming wife, Bonnie, and welcomed into our comfortable and spacious room with the ocean view. Over our stay, Ron and Bonnie were incredibly kind hosts: Bonnie and Ron are this incredibly happily married couple that just spread this amazing vibe of happiness and easiness of just being, which is exactly what you need when vacationing. They made multiple great suggestions on how to spend time on Roatan (this island has really much more to offer then just diving, so listed to R and B). And I can assure you, you will have a drink or two, and a very thoughtful conversation with both of them while you are staying at Cocolobo (Ron, loves red wine). Out relocation to west bay, after we were done with our certification, has never happened. This turned out to be a very undesirable location from our point of view: lots of cruise ship tourists and local people trying to sell you whatever there is to sell on Roatan, plus huge "all you can eat resorts". And since we had such a great time at Cocolobo, we were not even looking for something else at west end village. We just booked another 5 days there. Unfortunately, Bonnie was gone by then (she went to see her grand kinds in Canada), but Ron was the best host we ever had.
Now, about property itself. The beach is rocky, you won't be able to go for a swim there, and however, Half Moon Bay is just steps away. Yet there is an incredible beauty in this rough nature of the place. You will enjoy sunrises and sunsets (bring your camera), very well kept pool, fresh fruit, yogurt and granola breakfast (they also offer hardy meals that incl egg, bacon and stuff), and of course Bonnie's and Ron's hospitality. Btw, Ron sings and he also plays guitar, so make sure to ask if he is performing while you are staying at the beautiful Cocolobo.
P.S. ask them about massage service.

Ron and Bonnie are wonderful hosts, and the location is great: it is a five minute walk from the main strip of West End, which is, for people who like nightlife, a better option to stay vs West Bay (only resorts - nice beach, but a quick two dollar water taxi away). Ron and Bonnie did everything they could to make our stay the best it could be, despite the awful weather the week we were there, and we will most certainly be back. One night when the power was out in West End, Ron even came looking for us in town to give us a flashlight for the walk home - in the end we hitched a ride, but this was a perfect example of the type of hosts Ron and Bonnie are. Breakfast is great every day, and you meet really friendly people at the resort. Every room faces the ocean too.

Bonnie and Ron are great hosts of the B&B type resort. They are attentive to every request, friendly and entertaining while being unobtrusive. The rooms, all with refrigerators, safes, TV's, great showers, and comfortable beds are larger than expected. The location is perfect as a slow 6 minute walk brings you to the edge of town. The town has some decent restaurants that we liked: The Lighthouse, Rotisserie Chicken and The Cannibal Cafe. The deck of the common room has an infinity pool with a wonderful view of the coral strewn, coast line. The waves, generally moderate height, break upon the coral offering opportunities for wonderful spray filled photos of an incredible vista. The four breakfasts that we had were all above average and individually prepared. We had an extremely relaxing time with easy access to snorkeling. This is a comfortable place to rest, sleep and visit with many ex-pats around the bar, after a tiring day of diving. If you want a Caribbean diving experience on a Honduran Island where English is the first language, this is the place to come.
