Going by the Lonely Planet's recommendation, my husband and I decided to stay at the Mayfair Hotel for our last day in Goa.

I spoke with the owner (one of the two sisters) over the telephone to intimate them of our arrival and inquire about rates. I required a basic room for the two of us and was informed it was Rupees 1240. Arriving from Anjuna, we were received at the Hotel by an elderly man, who took us to our room ( along with 2 of our friends who wanted to keep their bags at our room for an hour until they finished their meal at the nearby Hotel Fidalgo and boarded their bus to Mumbai). The elderly employee informed us that there was no issue with that, but our friends would have to make an entry in the register as visitors and we complied. Just as we left our luggage and started to leave for Fidalgo, the owner calls up our room and says she misinformed me over the phone and that the room rate was actually Rs. 1595. I went down to speak with her to point out her unprofessional / unethical behavior, she accepted her mistake and offered to accept a payment of Rs. 1295. We explained to her that money was never the issue, but her lack of professional ethics had ticked us off and we wanted to move to another place. She requested once more ( considering the hotel seemed totally deserted ) and we obliged so as not to come across as snobbish.

Satisfied with the settled state of affairs, my husband, our two friends and I went out, lodging the room key with reception. After an hour, the 4 of us returned to get our friends' bags from our room and this lady was breathing fire. She was absolutely furious with us for having taken our friends' luggage up to the room. She challenged that if they wanted to deposit their bags, they should have done so at the the reception and having gone up to the room it meant they had "used" the room, and hence had to pay Rs. 1295. We tried to tell her ( she just did not want to listen to a single word we had to say and had a steady torrent of money demands flowing ) that it was her employee that received us and took all of us upstairs. If he was not aware of the rules then why should we pay for his mistake?

Despite having acknowledged their not one, but TWO mistakes, the two rude sisters had the audacity to threaten us saying, "Pay now, or we will not hand you your room key". Appalled at their uncouth manner and concerned for our friends' bus leaving in 10 minutes, my husband and I decided to be the better humans and paid as was demanded.

We were relieved to see the end of our stay with Mayfair's miserly, ill-mannered and dishonest owners the next morning. Do yourself a favor and browse a street or two away from the Mayfair, where you'll get a cheaper and mosquito - free room and where the staff will embody the friendly, helpful and honorable Goan spirit that we found in abundance everywhere except Mayfair.

This hotel almost ruined our holiday to Goa. The reception staff were horribly rude to my friends. We had paid a lot of money to stay there and then when we wanted to leave because the service was so bad (lectures on petty inconveniences, two hours spent at the beginning of our stay moving us around different rooms because the ones we'd booked, she wanted to use then 'for the little old ladies who come and stay', an insistence for us to leave the key with an untrustworthy reception and a generally rude attitude to make us feel unwelcome and belittled) we were in trouble because they had no refund policy and were not going to offer a refund. The management refused to talk to us with regards to the refund and only came down when we called the police. Even then, we got very little of what we were owed back because apparently our order had already been processed and so there 'was no money to give' - we only managed a portion of some money we'd paid in addition, after the stuffing around they did with us at the start. This is why they ask you to pay all up front - if you have to stay here for any reason, do what you'd do with most other hotels and pay when you check out, or at least after they've had to prove their competency to you.
This hotel's attitude to customer service showed that it was, clearly, all about the money and not about serving the customers at all. Please, do yourself a favour and don't stay here.

Room was nice and clean. The owners was helpful and friendly. Cleaning guy probably took a sip from our bottle of tequila, but bless him. :) Hotel is good located and quite cheap. We payed 1240 rupees for double.

Room Tip: Dont leave open bottle of alcohol. ;)

Although acceptable, the hotel is a bit tired. The owners (a friendly family group) explained they were not able to budget any improvements or maintenance this year - it seems well overdue. The rooms are, however, clean. I did not appreciate the immediate pressure to pay in advance for the nights we were originally intending to stay. The tariff seemed quite high for what we were getting and as we had arrived late we hadn't had a chance to look around. The eating establishment attached to the hotel provided poor service which probably accounted for its emptiness.

I stayed at the Mayfair Hotel for 2 nights in December 2012. The reception was welcoming and the room was clean. The room cost was about 1000 Rupees for a single/double room non-AC.

I hunted around the guest houses on 31st January Road and found that most of the rooms were pretty pokey although you could find a pokey room for 400 Rupees. In comparison, the Mayfair was good value and is very well located to enjoy Panaji.

I'm staying next weekend too before flying out from Goa.

I'd recommend this budget hotel for a few relaxing days in Panaji.

first impression of the lobby was OK, staff who greeted us were nice, and they let us in early (we'd been on an overnight bus and arrived at 7am) but the room was filthy. dirty floors, cobwebs everywhere, and even a used razorblade left in the bathroom. When we went downstairs and the manageress asked us if the room was OK, we told her it was a bit dirty (we were polite, but as she'd asked, we had to tell her). She then went on the offensive, suggesting it was our fault as we got there early. Later on when we questioned the bill (the price was more than we'd been quoted) she made up a line about taxes, although this didn't add up at all. She then went on to say she should charge us even more next time as we were in the room early. Believe me, there won't be a next time.

This was one of the very worst hotel experiences i've ever come across, We've stayed in FAR nicer places, for FAR less money in India.

Avoid this place like the plague.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel.

DON'T EVER GO THERE!!!
It was awful, dirty and unfriendly!
Our room was dirty, with spiders ind the corners and the smell of cat and pee was everywhere.
When we wanted to leave, the staff wouldn't give us back our passports, and wouldn't explain why
-It was just AWFUL!!!
