Beeing monsoon time we were lucky to hit a week almost without rain. We called Uday Mandreker 9822583127, at the bird sanctuary. He is a guide since 1993 and lives on Chorao Island. We took a taxi to the ferry from our hotel and arrived to Chorao by 7 am. Uday met us and dorve us to his place where we boarded his canoe. He drove us into backwaters and along the coast of the island. He was eagerly pointing out birds to us. We were also lucky to spot two crocodiles. The trip was really nice, even if your not a birds expert. Afterwards Uday invites us to a cup of tea at his house. It was all in all a great nature trip, relaxing to get away from the noise and crowds of Panjim.

On our visit to Goa, our driver arranged for us to go on a bird/crocodile watching boat trip. Being low season in Goa, we were able to have a 12 person boat all to ourselves along led by the very knowledgeable Uday and our driver. Uday was very attentive, obviously knew the area well. He was able to point out everything to us straight away so that we didn't miss anything. He made sure that we saw crocodiles and various bird species that we were looking for.

After the 3 hour trip, he kindly invited us into his home for some rest and refreshment. Having spoken to him, you can see clearly that he was extremely enthusiastic about what he does. It was a fabulous trip and he went above and beyond what we had expected. We can't thank you enough for looking after us! We will definitely be in touch the next time we are in Goa! Thanks again.... :)

Chorao is one of Goa's best islands. Blessed by its beautiful forests/trees and natural water, it is home to different species of birds.. must visit for bird lovers.

Had fun, but needs more attention by the care takers to be kept in good shape. Great spot for birding. However beware of over charging guys who try to lure you in the name of showing more birds and crocodiles.

We were advised to call ahead to arrange a trip and our taxi driver had a leaflet to hand, so we had an idea of what there was to see. We spoke to Uday on the phone and he suggested a visit between 7 and 10am to see the birds at low tide. He was happy to arrange a cab to collect us, but we already had one.

The journey involved a trip by cab from Candolim to the car ferry. The can came with us on the ferry which was a really interesting trip, seeing all the commuters on their way to Panjim (and seeing a motorbike trying to squeeze on at the last minute and almost drive into the sea). You could have done this as a foot passenger.

At the ferry terminal, Uday was waiting for us (7am) and we went to the booth to pay for entry to the bird sanctuary (Rs 220 for 5 of us - 2 adults and 3 children). We followed Uday to his home where we were invited inside for tea and yummy biscuits.

It transpired that Uday had been the guide there since 1993 and that he would be our boat man for the day. I wished we had negotiated a price for the 5 of us on the phone the day before as I realised at this point that we were committed regardless (tch my own silly fault).

Uday was a brilliant guide - as well as pointing out and getting close to birds that we would never have spotted on our own, he was really helpful getting us all in and out of the boat and was so gracious inviting us into his home for a second time when we got back to shore, for more tea and watermelon. He also cleaned our very muddy shoes!

The boat trip was peaceful and informative. No crocs but we saw two types of kingfisher at close range which was an absolute joy. We were on the water about 1 1/2 hours.

When I asked the price, it was Rs800 per adult, Rs 400 for the children and free for the 4 year old. Felt expensive but we did have the boat to ourselves, and we still loved it!
