“Exploring Sao Tome and Fontainhas”
Reviewed 4 May 2012

My guide knew the community well and they knew him - I found myself nodding to people, chatting to them about their homes and heritage; a very nice touch. I have gone to other historical walks, but this was personal - people shared the eternal conundrum of living in the past while looking toward the future. There was both pride in their heritage as well as a resentment, I felt, in having to perform history and culture for tourists.

The saddest part of this tour was the number of dilapidated and abandoned houses; their owners having left Goa for Bombay or Portugal. If walls could talk, what stories would these houses tell?

Panjim is very good hotel, has ancient and modern feel. Excellent homemade style food. Can have internet facilities? Service needs to improve. Rates is bit on the higher side. Friendly staff and good neat large rooms. Linen and Toilet maintained in good condition.

“A walk down Memory Lane!”
Reviewed 27 September 2011

I tried to find details about this walk and actually did it. i liked it a lot. it shows you the old Portuguese era mansions. though i did it in parts over 2-3 days as i stayed in the same area and i enjoyed a lot.

starting with a Maruti temple above the hills of Altinho, which is beautifully lighted in the night. beneath lies the Spring (1), locals call it a fountain on whose name the area is called as the Fontainhas. then you pass through the ward of Mala (2), turning to the right you would find 'Fundacao Oriente' (3) - a center for cultural learning, where regular courses of arts are run.

coming back to the original track would lead you to much talked heritage hotel properties of Panjim Inn, Panjim Peoples, Panjim Pousada and Cafe' Gitanjali, Velha Goa Galeria (4) - all in a single lane. beautifully maintained in original Portuguese outlook!

next lane has Saint Sebastian Chapel (5) on the left end and with lovely green backdrop of Altinho hills. the whole walk is parallel to the Ourem Creek (6) and a road called Rua De Ourem (7). moving ahead in Fontainhas, you will find many art & artifacts galleries that would attract you. turning right at a square where road ends would lead you to Pato Bridge(8).

keep moving ahead towards right from the square and again turn left to the ward of Sao Tome(9). the lane ends at the Sao Tome Chapel (10) at the Tobacco Square. the tobacco square (11) has the Tobacco house (12) that is now turned to Panjim's main post office and the Mint House - Casa de Moeda (13). and there you can see the giant Mandovi river full of ferry boats over sparkling water.

It is really a walk down Memory lane!
