“Nice hotel with fantastic view, but some tech glitch.”
Reviewed 24 July 2013

The location of this hotel or the location where this hotel is located is mind blowing, the service is excellent ,staff will mention the names( Hrishekesh,Gracy).wer too good, but we had some small problem, the rooms wer little humid with leakage everywhere ,the property must have been leaking ,infact all the rooms ,either it has to be taken care off or the management should offer a huge discount during monsoon, hence we had to cut short our stay.yes of course the staff was kind enough not to charge us for the day we checked out.i think monsoon is the wrong time for any one to stay at the resort,i would prefer some hotels near the city limits during monsoon in Goa if nothing then shopping at least!!!.

Room Tip: rooms with better sea view are less spacious, and the rooms with better space have poor view.

We took the Casino Royale Package and it was quite worth it.
Stayed at Villa De Penha. The location is very good, nice and silent. The Bay View Rooms located at the 2nd floors are the best view as you can see the Mandovi River.
We had an issue with the Hot Water in the bathroom for a day but than we got a free upgrade to the Suite rooms. Be sure to check for Hot water availability in the rooms. The Breakfast was OK, nothing lavish or such, its very lite. The pool is small, should have the Hot Jacuzzi.
The Staff is very courteous and always have a smile.
The Casino Royale with 2.5k per person per day Complimentary chips with Unlimited Drinks and Food was a good offer. The dinner buffet at the Casino is Good, but can be much better.

Overall we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Bay View ---2nd Floor

Stayed for 2 nights at Villa de Penha. Beautiful location, awesome food, neat & clean rooms. Service was impeccable and the staff took really good care of us. Went with a bunch of friends to celebrate. Would definetely recommend this hotel. Centrally located to get to all the north goa hotels/restaurants. Anurag, their hotel manager was of great help and always there with a smile to help.

Room Tip: Try & ask for the room facing the river.

I keep traveling to Goa for work almost every month and have stayed at Villa de Penha (VDP) about 3 times past in 6 months. This report is slightly dated since the last time I stayed there was at the end of April. The property is located in the Britona area and was taken over last year by one of the big casino operators in Panjim and converted into a hotel primarily for its guests. This place is a 10-15 minute drive from the heart of Panjim and its located right on the river Mandovi.

Rooms:-

There are 3 basic types of rooms here - Garden view, Bay view and Suites. I've stayed in both the Garden and Bay view rooms on my trips. Cannot beat the view of the Bayview rooms especially at dawn and dusk. There is something particularly soothing about sipping on your hot or cold beverage and watching the occasional marine traffic move along the lazy waters of the Mandovi. The only problem with staying on this side of the property is that there is a seating area with chairs and hammocks for guests to lounge in. Nothing wrong with that except they also play music and the volume of the speakers tends to sometimes become too loud. Usually if you shut the doors and windows (including the one in bathroom), about 80% of the sound does get cut out but light sleepers who want to catch a snooze in the day might be in for a rude surprise. Also it seems like they have just 3-4 CDs of music. I mean I like Bryan Adams but to listen to it 17 times over the course of a day is a bit much. The Garden view rooms are quieter except for the occasional sounds of passing cars since that side of the hotel faces the road. Also there seems to be some kind of gathering hall next door which the last time I was there was hosting one of those evangelical meets and well... those types can get quite loud when they want to. Never stayed in the suites but I imagine that they're probably not all that much different from the above rooms I've mentioned. The only you gotta give is that these rooms are quite spacious and they have their own balconies. And the balconies of the bay view rooms are really quite large too which, if you're a balcony person like me, will enjoy. When I was entertaining guests, we would hang most evenings in the balcony enjoying the breeze and the view. I've uploaded a bunch of pictures which will give you a good idea of what the Bayview room and the outer areas look like...

Room service:-

The food here is quite alright. The selection was quite limited when they'd first started but they have expanded their offerings in the past 6 months. Nothing to rave about but it is by no means bad. While room service is 24 hours, on the odd occasion you may not get what you want even from the limited list of dishes that are served in the late hours of the night. Overall satisfactory.

Pool and Spa:-

There is a small spa with 2/3 treatment rooms and an attached gym which is just a little too basic unless you are an absolute fitness nut who just needs a space to work out and not much else. The spa is under the management of a luxury brand called Pevonia and is on the expensive side with their treatments. I've had a few massages at places in Panjim city and think they provide a better massage at a much lesser cost.
The pool is more like a big jacuzzi rather than a pool. It starts to look crowded with more than 4-5 people in it but for those who don't mind, will enjoy I suppose.

Staff:-

This is a bit of a mixed bag. Most of them are quite well behaved and well spoken too but tend to be a little clueless sometimes. Like this one evening when we decided to hit the casino and while heading to our car, told Reception about our a/c blowing out just air and not cooling the room. We were told the problem would be taken care by the time we were back. That was 7pm in the evening and we got back at 3 am, sure enough the a/c was still not fixed. When we called down, they seemed like they had no idea anything was wrong. The problem was eventually sorted out and they got the a/c working again but there are obviously some gaps in staff communication. The one MAJOR point of annoyance is the front desk will call you every single evening and ask you whether you want to go to their casino or not. Now we went to the casino every evening because that's what we were there to do but it bordered on hounding the way they went on about it. Also late nights in the casino lead to late sleep and so we'd sleep till 8pm and head by 11pm to the casino, so it was seriously a pain in @$$ to be woken up at 6/7pm. VDP - sort this out! If this is how you behave with your casino customers, then you will lose them soon.

To and Fro:-

The interesting thing about staying at VDP is that you can take their feeder boat directly to the casino instead of the usual go to the jetty, wait for the feeder and then get to the casino routine. However the downside is there is just one feeder at 8/9 pm and there is no return service. You may go by boat but you will have to come by road. Seems a bit silly if this is a selling point to the casino guests. If you do miss the feeder or wish to go earlier to the casino, there is a car outside which will drop you off. However if you wish to go elsewhere then you might have to get yourself a cab.

In conclusion, VDP has has many great things going for it - clean, spacious rooms and wonderul views at least on one side of the property. My rating is actually 3.5 out of 5 because of the many little bugs and kinks that need to be fixed. A room night here costs about 5,000 and at that price, a near 5 star property like the Taj Vivanta becomes an equally attractive alternative. It's safe to say that if the management pays a little more attention to get the little things right, then Villa de Penha will be a very popular hotel indeed.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the bay are the best. Amazing views! But make sure you use the blackout curtains pr...
