“A beautiful area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2014

Stayed here for a couple of nights at the end of our trip around South India and thoroughly enjoyed it. A beautiful quiet area full of charm and worth wandering around for a couple of hours. Good restaurants nearby for dinner. Tried, in vain, to buy some genuine Portugese tiles....very few shops stock them (although they can be made to order) and those which are available off the shelf have clearly been made with tourists in mind (not quite "a present from Goa", but not far off)

“Pictures are better than the reality”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2014

This is the original Portuguese area of Panjim where the buildings are still maintained the way they originally were.
It is a pleasant walk of about 30 minutes at best where you can take in the Portuguese architecture, check out the cute nameplates with exotic names and generally have a relaxed amble through.
The reality though is not quite as romantic as the pictures seem to be as some of the house are already converted into apartments and others are in decrepit state.Yet it is worth see.
The best way is to take a vehicle, park it near the Hanuman temple and then walk around for a few minutes and picking up the vehicle go up the hill to the Hanuman temple, take in the view of the area from there and then remounting take the rear road which runs through the poshest are of Panjim and then go down the hill past the Archbishops house to go the Panjim main church (Church of our Lady of Immaculate Conception)The whole trip this way should not take you more than an hour or two.
Please do not make the mistake of walking through as we did , because you do not get any vehicles at the end of the walk(near the temple) and walking up the hill and then still further up and then down again is very very tiring.

“Quaint and Charming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2014

Fontainhas is a beautiful area in Panjim, Goa quite close to the main bus stop. The narrow roads wind up and downhill and all of them have Portuguese names. All along are elegant and stately old Portuguese houses. Each of them have really pretty white tiled nameplates surrounded with a design of blue flowers. The quaint facades and architecture are charming to behold. One can but wonder at what marvels of paintings and intricate rosewood furniture lies within each of these houses. You feel as if you have stepped into a different world far away from the beaches and casinos of Goa. Truly a step back in time into the Portuguese era.

“A heritage part of Panjim (typical Portugal architecture maintained)”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 March 2014

I read the reviews of some heritage lovers in the trip advisor about FONTAINHAS, which is nothing but a part of Panjim city still maintaining THE HERITAGE BUILDINGS OF THE PORTUGUESE architecture. Those who love History, Heritage and architecture may love to see this place. I along with my wife simply walked along the streets clicking some photographs while strolling through. There was a beautiful shop, named as ' VELHA GOA GALERIA' which sell mostly Portuguese made items. I have attached the photos of the buildings which will give more details than my narration.

“Portugal in India..”

Fountanhas in Panjim has the remnants of Portuguese era. The architecture, the extensive use of solid shades of blue/red/yellow, will definitely delight you.
