An elaborate, baroque tomb houses the mummified remains of St Francis Xavier. He certainly attracts a lot of pious, colourfully dressed visitors. Not to be missed.

The tomb of St Francis Xavier is next to the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa.
The coffin is kept on display but the body of St Francis Xavier, which many believe possesses miraculous powers, can only be viewed once every 10 years. (that's what I was told)
A picture of the body is placed there to see.

There is a lot of tourist crowd on a typical day. So barring the crowd, the building itself is magnanimous and has intrinsic value from Architectural point of view. The tome itself obviously is not clearly visible, but nonetheless, the Church is worth a visit surely.

Fascinating history lesson from our guide Jerome, he was invaluable, stopping to let us take photos and giving us information as we walked around. 100RS ( £1.00 approx) fab! well spent on well over an hour tour. Amazing how preserved St Francis Xavier still is after all this time. A good interesting tour - a break away from all the usual beach stuff.

This Church is just beautiful and, as with all the others in Old Goa, it's nice to step inside and escape the heat and humidity for a little while. Interesting to see the tomb of the man himself - even though I find displays of remains and relics a bit mawkish. If you really want to see a fine example of this (truly Snow White style), take yourself to the modern Basilica di Santa Rita in Cascia, Umbria. We couldn't believe our eyes when we walked up the steps (didn't take the elevators....yes, elevators!) and entered this Church some years ago.....even the confessionals had green and red lights to indicate occupancy (think aircraft!)
