“Slightly old fashioned, quirky hotel”
Reviewed 18 January 2012

This hotel is built on a grand scale, with beautiful gardens. Our room overlooked the hills and the view from the balcony was peaceful, a good change from the crowded, interesting village centre. The staff were very helpful - sometimes it was a little difficult to get their attention. We had a large room that was very comfortable. The bathroom could have used some updating of the decor but everything worked fine. The buffet had a large variety of Indian foods that I thought were OK, especially the breakfast. I did see some Europeans get a little perturbed about the type of food but really why travel to a foreign country if you don't want to immerse yourself in the experience!

Room Tip: A room overlooking the hills, and on the second floor.

Munnar is a lovely station interspaced with Tea Gardens all over. Tea County (managed by KTDC) is situated in the hills and offers a nice view. There doesn't seem to be any issue with the rooms on the ground floor as the location is high enough. The staff is courteous and overall the stay was pleasant. Not too may add ons though... there is a functional gym but it is ill -maintained. We being vegetarian had a major issue with food there. The vegetarian dishes were pretty badly cooked and for the prices we pay completely unjustified. Breakfast is good though. In all, a value for money proposition.

This place is pretty much of a dump. The rooms are okay--certainly clean enough. But that exhausts its virtues. The dining room is pretty awful--breakfast buffets don't even include eggs--just several pots of different Indian gruel. The "health club" consists of an empty swimming pool, a broken treadmill, and a broken exercise bike. The staff at the front desk seemed pretty clueless--able to keep the place running, sort of, but not of much help with any kind of direction or guidance.

Several other reviews say that this is the "best place" in Munnar, which may be true; we didn;t examine the alternatives.. The quesiton is--are you sure you want to be in Munnar to begin with? The hotel web site says that Munnar "retains the charm of a colonial past." Not true! While it may have been an idyllic hill station decades ago, now it is ridden with traffic and garbage. That may apply to other Indian cities as well, but at least some of those those have a commercial dynamic and/or historic past which makes them interesting. This town is just not worth stopping for, let alone staying in.

We spent two nights at the Tea County. It was a long 5 hour ride from Thekkady to Munnar. Bumpy at a number of places you will find tea plantations and mist-capped mountains along the way.

The Tea County sits on top of a hill. The rooms are housed in the chalet bungalows and our room has a balcony looking over another hill top (though not particularly scenic). The twin sharing room I stayed in is spacious and comfortable.

The restaurant had a good range of delicious and enjoyable local food. The cardamon tea they served was fragrant and smooth. Last century’s 80s music (sounds so long ago) was played the two nights we were there, for those who grew up you may get to “re-live” your teenage again.

The Tea County is about 20 minutes from the town centre. There is a sizable bazaar for the locals and it’s a fascinating introduction to a part of the local life. You will also find a Hindu temple, Christian church and a Muslim mosque within a stone throw of one another – it’s an interesting sight and hopefully it’s a sign of religious harmony as well.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony on the top floor.

I would class this hotel in the one star range. The exteriors are great and well maintained. View are amazing from all around the property and rooms.

The staff are friendly and always willing to assist, if they can speak English that is.

The rooms are huge with balconies that have amazing views, rooms are well equiped. Problem is with cleanliness. The rooms were not very clean, I even noticed spider webs on the ceiling. Curtains were in desperate need of a wash, the bedding too!

Bathroom was well stocked but once again could do with a good clean. The shower head was filthy! The shower curtain needed to be replaced, it was beyond the washing stage. Bath towels were old, brown and stained. We were lucky enough to have carried towels.

The restaurant was just the same, dirty cutlery, crockery, chairs and table cloths. Order a can of Fanta, when I received it the can itself was filthy and had a roach leg on it! That was last we ate there.

All in all, the property is over priced and just not maitained. I would just stay away from KTDC properties! There are much better options in beautiful Munnar.

we had our first holiday in this Hotel and it was amazing. the rooms are very spacious and the hotel overviews the city as it is on hill. the ambience , food and quality service is just superb. a word of caution for those who can't walk in stairs , please choose some other property as all the rooms are at different nooks of the hill and they do not have a lift or elevator. the hotel also has a flower garden which add charm to its scenic view. overall, a very good hotel.

Room Tip: if you are on your honeymoon , all the rooms offers you privacy as they are located at different pla...
