“One time visit, Ferry ride is good ,caves average.”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

I have been to elephanta caves in year 2008 and again visited last saturday.
We got the tickets and boarded the ferry at 10 Am. We shelled out 10 per passenger extra for the upper deck . Unfortunately it was super hot and there was no shade.
Wind wasn't blowing enough.
We were already so tired before reaching the caves that we hardly spend 30 min in the caves.
Return trip was pleasant though with wind blowing .

Overall :
1. 1 time visit , ride by ferry and the sea view and ships view etc is good.
2. it takes almost half of your day so need to plan accordingly.

“Different Experience”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

Elephanta a world heritage site close to happening city of Mumbai but caves are located on island..If love to see such monuments good option to visit..bit taxing on moving between caves..but certainly good to spend time with family and friends..one visit is at-least must..get luxury boat in a group at gate way of India, it takes about one and half hour one side...do not forget while coming last boat is at 1730 hrs..in any of the journey additional money is asked for upper deck but officially it is not required, already you have paid for full...its your wish to choose lower deck and upper deck once or any thing else..Sincerely feel such good site need to be maintained even better..

“Stinky place and they call it a UNESCO site”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

Take a boat ride from the Gateway of India. The charges are quite nominal and the boat ride for more than an hour is different experience. Once you reach the cave, you are in a shock as the place is badly maintained and is full of bats. The place stinks and the caves/statues are damaged or defaced. What does it take the tourism department to promote this lovely destination. The monkeys are really notorious. If you have any food in your hand, from nowhere the monkeys come and attack you. There is no proper place to sit or relax. There are no restaurants there, so carry your own food and water.

“Elephanta Caves a Unesco Heritage Site”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

I visited Elephanta Caves in March 2014.

Getting to the caves requires to take a ferry ride from Gateway of India in Colaba, Mumbai. The ferry charge is around 150 Rupees for premium ferry. The ferry takes around 1 hour to reach and depending on the weather it can be a good ride.

Even though the entry fee to the caves is minimal at Rs 10 for an Indian tourist. The caves are in poor shape for a Unesco Heritage site. There is trash lying around inside some of the caves and the pathways need maintenance.

There are also a lot of monkeys in the area which may need people to be careful.

The sculptures and the wall carvings particularly in the main cave are beautiful but the poor lighting takes away from the view.

All in all worth a 2-3 hour visit but not more.

“Not Worth the Time and Effort”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

Nothing much to see. Steep Hill to climb is not the main issue. Once you get to the top, there are only 2 caves with minimal rock carvings to see. Takes too much time and effort to see a little bit only.
And there are multiple fees for upon arrival at the Island. Worst of all is that the Fee to enter the area with only 2 caves with minimal carvings will cost a foreigner 10 times the ticket proce for an Indian citizen. What a #$&()^ rip off.
