Went there to revive some of my old memory - after almost 20 years. Though I find nothing has changed - the basic type of motor boats are still remaining the same - taking 1 hour to cover a distance of 11 KM - in today's age of catamaran that sound too old fashioned. For luxury travellers there is no option for a little more comfortable ride to visit Elephanta. However once you reach there, the caves are really good - strongly suggest you take a proper guide to explain things - it is worth. Feel the history and the architecture telling you a story of mythology. This is a good place to be and keep at least 5 hrs for a roundtrip from Gateway on a normal weekend day.

We visited the Elephanta caves on 17 Aug 2014
It is the wonderful experience
We stayed in the hotel near Dadar railway station from Dadar station we travelled by local train up to church gate station(one of the beautiful well maintained local sstation)take return ticket for Rs.20/-, church gate station to Gateway of India by taxi there are many taxies run with sharing basis charge Rs 10/- per person after reaching Gateway of India, at leftside of the gate ferry is ready there are several vendors selling the ferry tickets to Elephants caves charges just Rs.160/- for both sides up & down, it is one hour journey from Gateway of India (first ferry starts at 9 AM last ferry at 4.00PM return ferry from elephanta caves starts at 12.00 noon and last one is at 7.00 PM there will be ferry at every 30 minutes )while travelling on ferry one can see the ships which are supplying the oil/petrol to Mumbai city from bay. After reaching to Elephants caves Island there is a toy train which runs from port to near steps of the caves they will charge Rs.10/- for both ways after getting down the toy train u have to purchase a grampanchayat ticker for Rs.5/- per head then take the journey using the steps to reach the main entrance gate here u can purchase a entry ticket for Rs.10/- for Indian origins above age of 15 years. There are total 7 caves, 2 are very long distant and which are not reachable easilr and in the remaining 5 caves cave no 1 is the important one there is a rare sculpture of lord Shiva with 3 faces in different moods nice carving of the rock which is the only one sculpture in good condition in entire caves. Take a guide or the book to know the history of the caves.
There is a beautiful view from the hills enjoy the natures beauty.
There are several hotels near entry gate one can take their lunch which is little bit costly coz there is no power supply to the hills they have to run the refregirators by generators.
We enjoyed our entire Elephants caves trip in just Rs.840/- for 4 persons of 2 audalts and 2 children.

Since i had a spare day in Mumbai, thought I visit the famous Elephanta caves as it would also include a boat ride of 1 hr. After a long "Q" for security chq i caught the boat. Expensive at 160.00 for up and down trip since it is operated by private boats and not the Govt or Tourism dept. Took the small boat and spent an hour on the sea. Reached the island and after a short climb of a hillock, we reached the famous cave. The first cave was Good and it took us 45 mins. THAT IS ALL THERE IS ON THE ISLAND. The rest of the caves are empty (without figures or idol). I then felt such a waste of time. Other than the imposing trimurthi figurine there is nothing else to see. Definitely not worth it if you have seen the Ajanta and Ellora caves.

Can't help feeling that, if these weren't in Mumbai bay, whether they'd get a visit. Perhaps historically important, they're not well preserved, and in many places roughly repaired with concrete. The boat across the bay and walk to the gun emplacements on the island are more fun than the caves in my opinion

The cave remains open on Monday thus pls keep it in your mind. There are boats from Gateway of India every 30 mins with a price of Rs 160 return. Kids below 5 years travel free. If you need to sit on the upper deck you have to shell an additional 10 bucks.
The ride is of 1 hour each way. Be prepared for a step trek to the caves. Also the view from the top is good however you are not allowed beyond 5 PM thus could not take snaps of a sunset

The place has decent food joints which are quite expensive for the food they serve. But I guess they need to get supplies from the city and thus it's expensive

The cave is good but better read and go to make some sense else you would be left aloof without any signages.

Go for it as it's kind of an excursion
