“Nice!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2013

A nice place to stay close to the station. The staff are friendly and my room was spacious, was upgraded for free when I arrived as there had been some sort of mix up, I wasn't complaining. The food is ok, the restaurant/garden is set back enough from the road for it to be nice and peaceful. The tour they do is more of a ride and a point in the right direction. It goes to a trippy hindu temple, Pakistan border closing, and then the golden temple in the evening. as it it recommended by the LP it's a good for meeting fellow travellers.

We stayed in this hotel for the second time on the 19th October 2013.
Though it was not a very a good experience in our earlier visit last year, we booked again (we fell for the location that is just across the railway station), thinking that they might have improved.
But they proved us wrong. Not only this was the most terrible experience in a hotel for us, I would strongly recommend you stay away from this property if you want peace of mind and good memories of Amritsar.

I am transcribing my experience here:

We had booked three deluxe rooms by paying an advance token amount. I had mailed and telephoned them requesting that we are coming with some very important guests, so please give us best of the rooms in this category, which they assured us of.

We entered the hotel at about 1.45 pm; we were told me that they have upgraded one of our rooms to a Super Deluxe category. And then he said you need to pay extra for that!!!!! We traveled around the world and got rooms upgraded many times, but every time it was complimentary (free upgrade), but they asked us to pay extra for the upgraded room!!!! Just imagine!! You didn't ask for something and they force you to pay for that as well.

And also, this room had faulty water heater, which they said it just gives mild shock!!!! So don't use it while switched on!!! Though they started repairing it, but at the very same time when our guests had to use the bathroom and get ready!!

We were also tol that they need to change another of room of ours, this one is a lower category room and it has some seepage in the bathroom. For this they said he will give me further discount on the rent of this room. I thought, if it's just the bathroom and I do not have anywhere else to go at this time, with other guests, I agreed. Then we transferred the luggage to our rooms, with me taking this lower category room myself along with my wife.
We ordered a quick lunch there because we had to rush to see the Wagah border ceremony as well.
Lunch served was one of the most pathetic ever we had eaten in a hotel, so we decided we will not eat here again, during our stay in Amritsar.
We went for Wagah, and returned at 10.30 pm. We were so tired and wanted to get into the beds immediately.
But in our room, I saw the seepage was all over, not just the bathroom, contrary to what they had said. There were so many mosquitoes all around. I went to the reception and asked for an 'All-out' mosquito repellent. I reminded them about 5-6 times, went myself and telephoned! They did not even provide me with a mosquito repellent!!

Then I telephoned asking for changing our room, as I was not happy and was not having even satisfactory experience. But instead of helping, I was told that the room was already shown and further that if I am not happy I can check out and get into another hotel!!! Think when you are asked to leave hotel in the night at 11 pm. I said I can't go anywhere at this time plus I have paid you advance.
It was a horrible night with mosquitoes biting us and millipedes in the bathroom.
In the morning I noticed, the whole building is ill-maintained old structure. They earn money but do not spend on the up-keep of the hotel! At the time of checkout, the biller at the reception said you have been given Rs. 75 discount on the bad quality lower category room and being charged Rs. 230 extra for the so-called upgraded room (he claimed it's also a discounted rate though)!! They think people who come to their hotel are fools! Amazing!

Down with:

• Very poor service (no service at all)
• They didn't even help transfer luggage to the rooms
• Non-cooperative and illiterate staff
• Biased and non-cordial owner
• Ill-maintained old structure
• Paint and plaster falling apart all over
• They just know to earn money, but do not spend money on the hotel maintenance
• Strong dampness and smell in the restaurant, so stuffy we couldn't sit there for even 2
minutes
• They did not even provide mosquito repellent when asked again and again
• Had to ask many times for getting the towels in the bathroom
• Damp beds
• Upgrade (so-called) was also charged!!!
• The condition of the room was way more pathetic actually than told
• WiFi does not work
• Its should have been a dharamshala with free rooms for pilgrims!!!
• Very overpriced as compared to what you get in return!

Conclusion:

Do not waste your hard earned money here, look for better options, I am sure Amritsar will have better places to stay, even for one night.

Easy to get to from the railway station and a few minutes rickshaw from the bus station, this hotel was fine for our short visit to Amritsar. The staff and receptionists were always very courteous, smiling and interested to help. We paid less than 1,500 rupees per night for our room.

We were not impressed by the meal provided by the hotel garden restaurant- it was overpriced and stingy. After that, we always ate out.

The room quality was good - a decent standard. The free wi-fi didn't initially work, but after the first day it was really good. Unfortunately our shower didn't heat up, so we only ever got a luke-warm shower even though it looked like it was working. Slightly frustrating, but in spite of that we were happy with the level of comfort. There was a flat screenTV in the room.

The guided tour provided by the hotel proved to be good value and worth doing. For less than 600 rupees we saw the Mata temple, made a trip to the Attari border crossing ceremony and the Golden temple all in the first afternoon.

I would be happy to use this hotel again in future.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the entrance are quieter when people arrive late at night.

Stayed at Grand hotel Amritsar for two nights 23rd & 24th Oct. 2013. The distance from railway station to hotel is just two minutes walking. I reached to the hotel with my wife from station without taking any vehicle. Nice stay. Rooms & bathrooms are enough spacious and clean. We booked super delux room, where AC worked properly. They arranged Wagha border tour, which include Mata temple and night vision of Golden temple. The hotel arranged one big luxury 7 seater Innova cab, but we were only 4 tourist inside the car, me my wife and a couple from Sweden. The hotel has a bar and restaurent, where draught beer and tasty food is available. After a long gap i took 4 mug chilled draught beer which was a great relax mood. Tried tanduri iteams there, very tasty and stomatch friendly. The hotel is very safe to stay with family.

Great location: across the road from railway station. If you enjoy exploring on foot, within walking distance to all major landmarks in Amritsar. Stayed here 2 nights. Appreciated garden courtyard off street: a quiet, calm, plant filled oasis in which to recoup after a day of exploring in the city. Hotel restaurant food good, typical northern India fare. Close to other restaurants if you want alternatives. Room was large, plentiful hot water. Good value.

I appreciate the amazing service.we enjoyed the lovely garden and had our dinner here which was good and value for money.the best of the hotel is its walking distance from railway station. The hotel organizes tours to the border,Golden Temple,Mata temple at 590 only per person. Staff were friendly amd were ready to help on any of our inquiries. Will recommand this hotel and would be happy to stay here again.
