“La Laanta hideaway is another Thai paradise”

The road down to Bamboo Bay at the south end of the island, where La Laanta, is located was recently paved all the way. This portends more development, so get there as quickly as you can!! The hotel meetup at the chaotic ferry terminal was on time- altho their little hotel sign was a bit difficult to notice! Caution, there is a minor fee to enter the island charged at the ferry terminal. This is NOT a scam, altho the beneficiary of the monies may not actually be the preservation efforts advertised.
The hotel is built on a remote hillside and the little stairs and steps inside the suites (especially at night getting to the bathroom in the dark) are very hazardous. Careful!
Our shower was barely acceptable- plenty of hot water, but pressure was minimal.
Staff was friendly, and unobtrusive, except occasionally at the bar after 9p when staff "lets their hair down"- I counted this as a PLUS! Connecting with staff on a personal basis can be fun and interesting. Breakfast was okay, nothing special.
Lovely beach, lots of shells, hammocks, lovely infinity pools, spectacular sunset views. Excellent dining options along Bamboo Bay beach. La Laanta also serves good food.
But remember, this is the Best hotel on the beach, one of the best beaches on the island, and is located "at the end of the road"- 30+ min from congested Lanta Town.
All in all, a lovely resort, with mostly location-related shortcomings.

Room Tip: The Sand Castle suites are The Best!

With the help of our travel agent Andaman Adventureswe were able to stay at this hidden gem of Koh Lanta. We had tried to book the resort ourselves, but the language barrier was just too great.

Laid-back, remote and attractive surroundings, this resort ticks the boxes for "hidden gem". We stayed at the top roomtype, which still couldnt be called expensive compared to many resorts in the area. The staff was always smiling, the meals were of very good quality and the nature at the resort is spectacular. A recommended experience from us!

My boyfriend and I stayed at LaLaanta for 5 days at the end of November. On arrival at the ferry port on Koh Lanta, Patrick the owner was waiting for us to pick us up. This was much appreciated as you get pestered by numerous taxi drivers and hoteliers trying to get your business, so much less stressful having it all booked in advance.

The ferry port is at the north of the island and LaLaanta is at the very south of the island, so the 25 minute drive to the resort takes you along the main road on the island, through the most touristy parts, and makes you appreciate how quiet, remote and natural it is when you reach LaLaanta.

The resort is set on a private beach which is beautiful, and the most quiet beach we experienced during our entire trip around Thailand. The beach leads to the National Park so there is plenty of wildlife to see, including birds of prey and monkeys. There are rocks leading into the sea, but there are also clearing areas to swim safely so the rocks aren't a problem. The locals will often fish on the beach too which is very interesting to watch and see what they catch. If you aren't a fan of the sea, there are two great infinity pools to swim in too.

The staff at LaLaanta are brilliant and made us feel right at home, with plenty of puzzles to challenge us with, volleyball matches on the beach and after dinner games of darts, there was never a dull moment. Despite there being 2 days of pretty much solid rain whilst we were there, they still managed to keep us entertained. They lay out of the resort meant that even when it was raining we could still hang about in hammocks and read our books (there is also a huge selection of books to read and dvds to watch, supplied by the resort), instead of being cooped in our room. The resort's four friendly dogs also helped to keep us entertained.

The food at breakfast is fresh and kept refilled. Dinner and lunch is served in the restaurant and it was great value and very tasty - we ate there 4 out of 5 days.

Due to the remote location of the resort, the only way to get out and visit other parts of the island was by moped. There are about 6 available to hire. We took one out for a day, and drove to the other side of Koh Lanta and visited the Old Town. I cannot recommend this enough...the drive there took us through some of the most beautiful parts of Thailand that we saw during our trip.

I would recommend LaLaanta Hideaway to anyone looking for a chilled few days in a beautiful part of Thailand.

I expected that a hotel in the $100-$200 category would do better than this, but in just about every category, it disappoints. Note that at a lower price category, I would forgive them many of these faults.

The room: nice enough, though the decor is a bit dated (old tube TV in the corner). Bed is pretty hard. Bathroom has an instant hot water heater, which means showers are more of a trickle than you might want. Toilet tended to run, a flaw in the placement of the handle. AC works well.

Buffet Breakfast: this was pretty good. Good bacon, passable pancakes, tropical fruit, some sort of baked goods.

The grounds: The two tier pool is lovely. The walkways are carelessly constructed, requiring guests to walk out of the way to get where they are going, and with some high steps and wide dirt gaps. The only way to get here is on a steep, deeply rutted dirt driveway, making taxis charge extra to pick up or drop off. Couldn't you have paved it, or even maintained it? Likewise, the landscaping gave the sense that it had seen better days. Maybe just the dry season?

The location: it is at the far south end of the island, about 30 minutes drive from the ferry, and for from just about all the businesses (there are a couple of other same same restaurants on the beach in walking distance, but nothing resembling a store). There is just about nothing here, which sounds good (no development) until you realize that there is one restaurant, with one menu and one bar that you can use for the entire stay. The prices are inflated even above the elevated levels that are the norm on Koh Lanta (drinks are $6 to $7, elsewhere they are $4-$5). Taxis into town start at 400 B ($12) each way, and that's to the closest edge.

Oh, and unless you pick flights (or other transport) very carefully, you will probably end up paying 3000 B ($95) each way for a taxi to from Krabi Town. While you can take a share van too, you will pay over 1500 B for two ppl, and it takes much longer and is rather uncomfortable.

The staff: The are jovial and nice, but not terribly professional, always joking around with one another. Again, for a cheaper hotel, I would not expect more, but for $200 a night, I expect a more professional attitude. When I arrived, exhausted, at 6:00 pm, nobody could be found at reception to check us in and show us to our room. This was the norm, not an exception. There was never anybody there who spoke more than the very basic english, making even basic requests a chore.

Finally, and I don't know if this was just the time we went, but the whole place was occupied by young parents with toddlers.

And, as a little kick in the pants on the way out, they charge an extra 3% to pay credit card, as if every other business in the universe doesn't eat the cost of a credit card fee in exchange for the convenience. And they did not warn us about this in advance.

Lovely location with very attentive staff. The beach and the sea are great with plenty of loungers in either the sun or shade. Food was good and service excellent. Bungalow was nice but some of the décor was a little tired. Comfortable mattress but on a wooden platform so it did feel rather hard. Lacked space to store clothes. Chairs on the veranda were very comfortable and the whole site very clean. It is rather remote so you cannot pop out to a shop but this was not a problem for us as we just wanted a quiet few days by the beach.

This place was just pure bliss. We stayed here for lmost a week, then spent a spell in Ao Nang at the Cha Wan hotel, then finished up at the U Sunsuri, the whole trip with transfers and excursions booked through Andaman Sky - great holiday, with the build-up to the last most posh place being just perfect, we started off seriously chilled out here at the LaLaanta getting rid of the city stress, then moved on to the more up-tempo Ao Nang, then finished up with somewhere more upmarket on Phuket.

The LaLaanta is a great place to start your holiday, real chill-out zone, we took a trip during our time here to Koh Rok to go snorkeling, which was the best daytrip we took on this holiday. The food and rooms are great at the LaLaanta but the thing that sets this place apart is the staff, they are just soooo friendly, it’s difficult to believe it’s all sincere but I choose to do so. The food is actually a highlight here, has to be as the place is really pretty remote, but if all you want is to reacquaint yourself with your significant other in an atmosphere that is really romantic and comfortable plus offers great beach scenery and swimming, then the LaLaanta is a good choice.

We arrived on the 19th December 2013 for an 8 day relax after travelling around Thailand for 2 weeks. Lalaanta Hideaway exceeded our expectations in every way. We knew from previous reviews that it would be good and that it should be right for us, but it could not have been better. The position is perfect if you prefer a quieter area, although nothing is too far away. The accommodation was perfect, very comfortable and a good size. The beach is stunning and the surrounding area is beautiful. We had all of our meals at Lalaanta's Castaway Restaurant as the food was excellent. As for the staff, they absolutely were the icing on the cake. Great characters and personalities.
We will definitely return.
