We spent 16 days on Koh Lanta, staying 8 days each in the hotels ranked 1st and 2nd by Tripadvisor members: (1) Layana resort and (2) Lalaanta Hideaway. Both were excellent in their own way, truly deserving their almost unbelievably high ratings by everyone.
At Lalaanta Hideaway, it is worth spending extra for the Sandcastle Villas. We were in villa 105, which had wonderful views over the infinity pool, beach and sea. The room was spacious with extensive glass windows that allow you to admire all the jungle greenery. Breakfast was great, with juices, fruit, eggs and bacon, excellent pastries and very fresh bread for toast. Some days June makes pain au chocolat herself (getting up at 6am to prepare the many-layered pastry). Nearly the cafes in Paris use factory-prepared pastry for their croissants and pains au chocolat (I saw on TV recently), so it is amazing to get the real thing in such a remote location in Thailand.
The Bamboo beach is great but the sea can be a bit tricky in such a Southerly location. The breakers are not so big but occasionally you can get caught out and spun round. The sea is not suitable for children or those weak on their legs. (Further North in Layana Resort, the sea was like a mirror.)
The lunches and dinners at Lalaanta are fine, with a weekly seafood barbecue. If you want some variety, there are two other restaurants along the beach, both with good viewing platforms for the memorable sunsets from this beach.
The Lalaanta sun loungers are comfortable enough, but heavy to move and you cannot get easy shade after about 2pm because the sun is coming in at a narrow angle, from the West - out at sea - and the shadow from sunshades moves accordingly.
We had a great eight days at Lalaanta, excellent value with a very friendly and helpful staff. If you are worried about the references to hotel dogs in the other reviews, don't be. They are no trouble whatsoever and we scarcely noticed them. I am very happy to give this resort five stars in every category!

after spending months trying to find a perfect trip for our honeymoon, and nearly going to two other country's, eventually myself and my husband decided on thailand. then began the weeks of trawling the web for the perfect places to stay. after deciding on traveling up to the north, then to krabi, we wanted a final perfect place for our last 5 nights, and we found it, thanks to trip advisor! la laanta is wonderful. the island it's self is fantastic, rustic and traditional yet open to tourism, though it doesn't feel too overtaken (yet!). we were picked up from the ferry and had an eventful journey back to the resort. i'd read the reviews (many times!) so knew about the dirt track, its an experience and one that i loved!
la laanta is fantastic. we had room 102, the second room back from the sea. we could see the pool and sea from our room, and although close to everything, you didnt feel overlooked, and by closing the muslin curtains you could still see out without people seeing in. the room was really lovely, spacious and clean. the staff are so, so friendly, they really make you feel at home. but they are not too in your face, they leave you alone if you want to be left, or if you want to join in and chat, then you can. the owners are about and hang out at the bar of an evening, the hotel is their pride and joy and the love they have for it shows through in everything about the place.
the pool was beautiful, occasionally a bit of debris in the smaller pool but someone soon would come along to clean it out. to sit in the infinity pool was breathtaking. the beach is absolutely beautiful, a stunning large bay with one other small resort nestled at one end. you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. the sea can be quite rough with big waves, but that is great fun to play about in. it can also be calm and still, and this is when you see how cristal clear it is and just how beautiful.
the food is fantastic, and they will do anything you want, one night we couldnt decide on starters, so they just made up a selection for us which was wonderful. we also got a bottle of bubbly and desserts for free on our first night as it was our honeymoon, and i'm not sure how many drinks patrick (one of the owners) bought for us, we kind of lost count on those evenings! the prices for food and drink were good, they could charge a fortune as they have the monopoly on it, but it's very good value and no more than other places we stayed at or ate at during our stay in thailand.
we had a scooter for one day which was wonderful, we explored the whole island, but to be honest, couldn't wait to get back to the resort! we had lunch out, but it was rather dissapointing after the food at la laanta!
all in all a beautiful place, beautiful people. if you want a relaxed, friendly place, where you can wear what you like, have your feet in the sand when you have your dinner, be a stones throw from the national park and the sea, and feel like your in the middle of no where, then this is the place for you. i only hope we get to go back again one day. thanks to you all at la laanta.

Simply and utterly very very nice! Staff was genuine, and had the appropriate feeling for privacy and service at the same time. Genuine and friendly other guests, that had the same kind of expectations and interests about a quiet and pleasant holiday.

I went back with my husband for the second time to LaLaanta as part of a honeymoon.
We specifically chose this resort as we LOVE the people who run it so very much.
Patrick, June, Tony, Kong and now Mackey. We adore you.

Mackey hadn't started on our first visit and boy does he add something special to the place. We loved his gorgeous smile and his stunning cocktails. And THANKS SO MUCH for the SPY!!
Our first visit was April 2008 when they had only been open a few months, so things had become a little busier due to it's popularity....but in no means has anything been ruined.
It's actually enhanced things as some services have been added which will make your stay even more enjoyable.
We really enjoyed talking to the other guests and hanging out with them at the bar in the evenings. We certainly didn't feel the need to keep to ourselves and be "honeymooners".

LaLaanta is very special as it has a vibe that would be impossible to recreate somewhere else. You may not have 5 stars, but you have 5 hearts :)

The additions we noticed the second time around were the following.

1. The plants had grown so the grounds looked even more beautiful than the last visit.
2. The breakfast was a little different (better) and now includes freshly baked pastries that June makes. YUM. And thanks for the Khao Tom Goong June.
3. There was now another computer station where you can check your emails for free.
4. You can borrow books, DVD's and magazines from the area where the computers are and watch them in your room. Also free.
5. Free WiFi in your room, awesome if you require this.
6. A weekly beach BBQ which has the most amazing array of fresh seafood and salads. I stuffed myself on crabs that night.
7. Some extended drinking sessions complete with sing-alongs and local Thai friends. VERY fun.

The food is excellent and we ate everything there. We are vegetarian and there is a great selection, plus you can request something to be made less spicy (Mai phet Ka!), vegetarian etc if you wish.
Be careful with the chilli ratings if you can't handle your food spicy.

Everything is very clean, including the dogs who got a bath before our arrival!
We love it here and our only complaint is that we were not there long enough. Will try and come back again very soon.

I'd be happy to answer any private messages about this resort and am 200% happy to recommend people to stay here and enjoy it as much as we do.

Mel & Sean

Where do I start, the location is amazing the staff are brilliant and the food was the best we had in our 2 weeks in Thailand! We stayed here for 4 nights in November and were picked up from Krabi airport by one of the resorts staff. The journey down takes about 3 hours but we were picked up in a big vehicle with lots of room and were given plenty of opportunities for stop offs. The last bit of road is more of a forest track and does get muddy when it rains but it added to the appeal of the place.

We loved the location as it is right next to a national park and so does feel secluded, it really does live up to the name of "hideaway resort". The horizon gaze bungalow that we stayed in was really nice and definately had charm. The whole site is not very big but a lot of effort has been put into giving the place a really nice atmosphere. The staff were brilliant and really made you feel relaxed and comfortable. They have a motto of "anything is possible" at lalaanta and we realy felt that they would do their upmost to help with anything we wanted.

The dining area next to the beach is lovely and is a great place to sit at sunset to drink cocktails before dinner. The food is all really tasty no matter what you pick and the portions were really generous which was great. Also the BBQ night, which is once a week I think, was realy good - eat as much as you like and there's fresh crabs, fish and king prawns as well as veg and salad.

The resort has a couple of dogs which are lovely and they'll wait on the beach in the mornings to go for a walk with whoever is heading off to the national park. The walk through the park is really nice but don't forget to take 200 baht per person for entry. As for things to do, the resort has a couple of kayaks which you can take out at any time which is really fun. Also there are various day trips you can do and we did the Koh Rok snorkelling trip which was brilliant. You get picked up from the beach in the morning and all equipment aswell as lunch is provided- it's definately recommended.

Other reviewers have said about how remote the location is but there are scooters that the resort have for hire although you wouldn't want to ride them if it's been raining as the road gets very slippery. To be honest you wont really want to leave the resort as it's such a lovely place and the food is so great!

I would really recommend this resort to anyone who wants to get away from it all. There is something very special about lalaanta, I don't usually go to the same place on holiday twice but am definately considering it here.

If you come to LaLaanta be prepared to leave a bit of your heart behind, it is with sadness that we left such a beautiful friendly piece of paradise. Unusually the pictures on the website are exactly what you can expect when you arrive. No false advertising here. The accommodation is clean, well maintained and all appears quite new, your villa is cleaned daily. We stayed in an enchanted villa, which for the price is really good value for money. Take a trip down to Long Beach where most of the bigger resorts are situated and you will be so glad you opted for this quiet hideaway spot surrounded by beautiful jungle. The quality of the food is excellent, reasonable value for money and with excellent service at all times. The variety is great ,from Vietnamese to Thai to really good Western T Bone steak, not to mention the huge variety of excellent smoothies and cocktails! Kayaks, internet, snorkelling gear, good selection of dvd's and books/magazines for your entertainment all free. Beach swimming is good and the pool is clean and tempting all day. The friendly staff speak English and are able to arrange any activities that you require. Scooter hire is cheap and they are well maintained. We loved it here and recommend it highly.
