After reading the recent negative reviews, I had to write in. We stayed at the Amantra resort from Dec15-22, 2009 and it was our favourite place in our month in Thailand. Beautiful, brand new hotel with nice rooms, a gorgeous clean pool and a fantastic location on a quiet, clean beach. We found the food in the restaurant to be really good (the breakfast buffet was only so-so but we found that to be common in a lot of the hotels we stayed at). We walked down the beach to the Miami hotel a few times for dinner and it was cheap and delicious (recommend any of the hot pots!). We rented a scooter at the desk (first they asked for 300 Baht a day but you can get it for 200). Great way to get around. Recommend visiting the national park at the south tip of the island- we saw lots of monkeys and a monitor lizard. Also we booked this hotel on-line through Agoda.com and got it for $51 US per night including breakfast. We booked almost all of our Thai hotels through Agoda and always paid substantially less than what was asked at the hotel itself. For that price it was a very good deal.

Overall, we thought that the Amantra was all right, though we thought it was a little overpriced - BHT3,500 a night. Try and haggle for a better deal - you can see what the designers of the resort have tried to do but the let-down is in the details (if you've stayed in some nice places in Bali you'll find this doesn't quite compare).
Pros:
- Good sized rooms, well-cleaned.
- Decent-sized pool.
- Spacious layout compared to resorts up the north of the beach.
- Quieter location.
- Prettier locaiton.
- Good for kids, if that's your thing.
Cons:
- Website overstates the elegance - correct in spirit, but not execution.
- Bathrooms and fittings were badly done, hot water variable, drainage poor.
- The service was a little slow, though this does seem to be common in easy-paced Thailand!
- Families meant a few screaming children (little darlings!)
- Music in the bar was repetitive and irritating.
- Bar shuts at 10.30.
- There are a lot of rooms for the number of staff, looks like they may build some more.
- Long walk to north of beach at night - and long walk back!
