“Save your money if it's low season”
Reviewed 17 September 2012

Sometimes you can just tell when you walk into a place, even a luxury resort, if the boss is on holiday. Sadly and frustratingly for us, we got that distinct impression throughout our whole stay at Crown Lanta.

The staff were visibly bored, lazy and we had trouble raising a smile from anyone who wasn't stationed at the front desk. We had to interrupt them from their magazines to order drinks, and prompt them 2,3,4 times for travel booking confirmations and answers to minor queries.

We stayed 3 nights in the Ocean Sunset Villa and yes, the sunset was amazing, but the trees were so overgrown that the view was greatly diminished. We had to move from our first villa because "rats had chewed through phone cables in the roof ", and when we were moved to our second villa, there was no running water...that is until this room flooded in the rain and saturated our bags. Apparently there was a broken seal on the door that hadn't been fixed. Dirty glasses from our room servicing were left outside our front door [by the maid] for over 24 hours, and during breakfast one of the waiters actually hoiked up and spat loudly into the bushes below from the balcony in front of our table. Totally disgusting.

We knew it was low season when we booked, and that Ko Lanta is a quieter island, but I really wished we had saved our money and stayed elsewhere. There's no doubt that the hotel is in a stunning location and I imagine that it would be a very different place to stay in high season - when the staff have a reason to bother.

The thing is, I don't need to be waited on hand and foot, nor do I have snobbish expectations, but I do feel strongly that when you pay more for a reputable service, you should receive it.

We loved this resort! The two beaches that can be easily reached by food are nice and clean-in contrast to some other beaches on the island in off-season. All beaches are really nice,
but it seems that off season, only Katiang bay and the beaches nearby Crown Lanta are properly cleaned. Most resorts on the island were closed in august, and some really nice beaches looked devasted and were full of dirt from the sea. However, we had great wheater, 7 days without rain, only blue skies and sun, it was amazing! The hotel is great! Amazing views from the cliff, great and huge pools, a great pool bar and very nice staff at the Spa. The only thing we didn't like was that there is not so much choice in the restaurant for dinner concerning Thai food (if you don't like it too spicy, it is hard to find something, most dishes are curries). But if you have a car or motorbike, there are many nice restaurants not to far away from the hotel.

First and foremost, since the first moment I entered the room I was sad because I knew I had to leave it at some point. The hotel web site does not reflect the reality at all. Me and my wife stayed there during our honeymoon, and when we checked the web site, we thought it is a nice place, and felt we had to compromise due to the high price tag of different hotels in the area. After we left the hotel we didn't had that feeling at all.
The hotel is located in Ko Lanta island quite close to the town and the ferry pier, if you insist you can of course walk there from the hotel, but I don't see the reason for doing that if the hotel offer free rides to and from the town center.
We took a deluxe room with a private pool. The room is very big with a huge shower, bath and what ever you wished a royal shower will include. The bed was big and comfortable with a big selection of pillows. The minibar was nicely equipped, and the prices were reasonable. The room also included a leaving room space with sofas, TV, and a small table, which was very comfortable. From the leaving room there is a glass door to the balcony. Outside the room on the small terrace the room main attraction is located. The private pool, and it is private. The pool is large enough for a couple. Around the pool was a small piece of grass with tropical vegetation surrounding it with trees as well. Because the room was located on a cliff, the view from the pool was the ocean, what can be better then that?
We used the hotel transportation service each time we needed, and it was effective and time saving. The reception were very kind and nice and did for us almost everything we asked for (including sending stuff from the kitchen or even WiFi card to our room with the car service, free of charge). The place where are room was located was next to the hotel Grand Villa (but far enough) so we had a very quiet and private stay. On the other side of the room a similar room was located, but we didn't felt/heard the couple staying there as well. There are two beaches located next to the hotel, one of them is the hotel private beach which had all the services a Thai beach can afford (including on the beach massage). The hotel restaurant was really nice, and the food was great, if somewhat expensive (as expected). The breakfast was excellent with a big buffet containing a variety of dishes. I saw that the hotel had a big pool as well, but never went there. We had such a good time, that in the last day we couldn't resist and booked another night in our room (luckily it was available).

Room Tip: If you can afford it, take a private ocean pool villa. Ask for the room facing the ocean, sunset sid...

We travelled during "green season" and stayed 3 nights in Sunset Ocean Villa 2120.
The villa with a hugh veranda was located right in front of the sea on the cliff. However, there're lots of trees and plants wildly grown along the cliff which blocked the view from it! We think that the hotel should have noticed it and should have them trimmed to avoid this.
Besides, the door to the veranda couldn't be tightly closed leaving a large gap and our living room were all wet after the storm!
The Cliff Bar is a nice place for happy hour but the food was so so...
Everything was average but we accept all as we paid at a very low price since it's low season. We can only grade it as an average 4-star resort.
However, the guy from the travel info counter in the lobby was really helpful and nice, giving us useful recommendation about dining in other areas.

We stayed 2 nights at that great hotel, very nice, very friendly staff. A little bit far from the town(2 km) but they are free shuttles and the best is to rent a motorbike at the hotel and visit the island (coast and inside). Very quiet, great location, one of the best hotel I've ever stayed!

Crown Lanta has everything for everyone!

We are a couple that rarely spends much time in our room or at our hotel in general when on vacation. I guess you could say that we're not good at relaxing - usually. But at Crown Lanta our 5 days were amazing and very relaxing. The resort left little reason to go out to town, except for dinner a couple of nights(at Black Pearl). Our friends picked this location for their wedding, and they couldn't have picked a better spot. All guests enjoyed a relaxing vacation at Crown Lanta. Deiter and his staff took care of everything.

Our typical day at Crown Lanta
* Eat breakfast at the Peak restaurant - lots of juices and fruits to choose from.
* Head to the main pool for a swim with friends (enjoyed playing with the kids on their morning swim)
* Fantastic massage at the Crown Lanta Spa - from the moment I hit the table, i was already relaxed. The herbal hot compress was out of this world if you like the heat
* Hang out at the poolside bar for lunch
* Hang out at the poolside bar for happy hour until dinner (some times dinner was even ordered from the pool bar). The pool bar was a huge hit - especially for the British guests in our group.
* Romantic swim by ourselves in our private pool in our ocean private villa room. Can't beat that!
* Dinner in town or still hanging out at the pool bar

One day we did go on an snorkeling boat excursion that Deiter and his staff arranged. We went to one of the prettiest beaches I've ever seen. It was a great trip for couples and kids.

Really - none of this would have been possible without the wonderful hospitality of Dieter and his team. Since the wedding was a destination wedding, the manager Dieter was a huge help. He took care of everything. So much so, that the bride-to-be was the most relaxed I've ever seen on her wedding day. The staff was so meticulous and helpful that they spent over 30 minutes ironing the groom's dress shirt for the wedding. Dieter's team even performed a ceremony to pray for good weather during the wedding. Crown Lanta did everything and more to make sure the wedding was perfect and beautiful. The food was delicious at the wedding, I've never seen such an amazing buffet of fresh seafood and specialty Thai dishes. Service in Thailand and Crown Lanta is much different then I'm used to at home. No wonder why everyone was able to relax and enjoy time with friends and family and celebrate this special occasion!

Thank you Crown Lanta and Dieter. We will always remember our relaxing vacation in Thailand!

Room Tip: We stayed at the Ocean Private Pool Villa - It was amazing! Great views, very spacious, and very pr...

After the nearly 2 hour drive and two short ferry rides to reach Koh Lanta Yai, we saw that the island was pretty quiet and a little underdeveloped even in the Saladan township. Part of the reason it was so quiet is that July is considered the offseason. This means ferries, tours, and lots of businesses close during this period. The hotel itself was quite lovely and the buildings were very new looking. The landscaping was attractive and the architecture made it ideal to almost blend in with the local surroundings. The check-in was quick and they took us by golf cart to our room. It was only about a 2 minute ride but there are some steep hills so the ride was appreciated. Our room was one of the Elegance Deluxe ones which is close to the two restaurants and the pool with the swim up bar which has a nice happy hour every day. Our room was spacious, lovely, clean, and well furnished. The bathroom was huge and there was plenty of room for our things. We never felt cramped at all. The bed was big and comfortable. There was a decent selection for the mini-bar but as you can expect, it was a little pricey. Our room was on the 2nd floor overlooking the pool and the view was amazing. Since it was offseason, we were told the hotel was less than half full. It was quiet, relaxing, and the service overall was good. My wife is Thai and she spoke with the managers and other staff to discuss where we should eat and what we should see. We ordered room service 3 times and the food was pretty good. Breakfast was not included with our room and they charged us 500 baht (about $18 USD) each. That's an expensive breakfast so we only ate there one time. There is a tour company which has set up a desk in the hotel's lobby and they provide various tours and rentals. SInce it offseason we were not able to take a boat to Phi Phi island for an entire day. The boats would only allow us about 3 hours on the island before we had to depart. i think there are some agreements among the hotel owners on Phi Phi island and the tour operators to get people to stay overnight on the island. We were able to rent a car for 24 hours for about $60 USD and we drove around the island checking out beaches and even the Koh Lanta National Park which was beautiful. Overall the hotel was very nice, very comfortable, clean, and it felt like a bit of paradise for us. We told them it was our honeymoon and the put flower petals on the bed one morning after they cleaned the room and gave us a complimentary bottle of champagne. Great job Crown Lanta Resort and thanks for a memorable trip!

Room Tip: Book an elegance deluxe room overlooking the pool or book one of the private villas. We had a elega...
