Crown Lanta Resort & Spa

Reviewed 19 March 2014

We had decided to book up Thailand for our Honeymoon and we were not disappointed!

We stayed at the beautiful Crown Lanta Resort & Spa for 9 nights.

The Crown Lanta Resort & Spa is a very impressive resort. It’s on quite a large complex which required some guests to be escorted to and from their rooms via golf buggies. Pretty novel I must say, but once you’ve got your bearings you could easily walk around and explore the resort, which is surrounded by trees and stunning views out to sea.

All of the staff were very friendly, and really could not do enough for you, the rooms were clean and the pools and surrounding areas were very clean also.

We stayed Bed and Breakfast and can safely say that the breakfast was absolutely superb.

Breakfast is served at The Peak Restaurant which is at the highest point of the complex and over looks the sea, which on a clear day you can spot Koh Phi Phi Island and Hong Island - a great way to start the day. Depending on where your room is, it’s either a walk away (tackling the hill) or a buggy request. We started off calling for the buggy, but then after a few days decided to just walk it as it was abit of light exercise.

We were relatively new to Thai food so having a choice of Thai soups and dim sum for breakfast also among your more traditional selections of bacon, sausages, egg (done however you like) meats, fresh fruit and cereals was defiantly an eye opener for me and my husband. Of cause we had to have abit of what we would call traditional breakfast but it was great trying new foods too.

Most days for lunch we ate around the pool, but if you did want to venture into Koh Lanta town you will find that your lunch bill will be abit cheaper, but for us it was covenant to stay by the pool but on our last day in Koh Lanta we decided to re-try a restaurant from the night before for lunch in Koh Lanta town and we did notice the difference in the price. But all food cooked within the Crown Lanta Resort & Spa is fresh and delicious.

The resort puts on a shuttle to and from Koh Lanta town; tuk-tuks are readily available also. Would advise against walking into town from the resort, especially at night. The roads aren’t lit to well and the resort is off of a busy road. The shuttle is free and a tuk-tuk ride will cost you only 100 baht one way. The shuttle runs at 11am, 2pm, 7:30pm and 8:50pm, and you pick the shuttle up from reception. Returning from Koh Lanta town the shuttle times are 10mins after the shuttle has left Crown Lanta Resort & Spa.

The resort has 2 pools and 2 restaurants on the complex. By the main pool you can have Thai Massages for 600 baht. The Spa facilities are fantastic, again all staff are friendly and can not do enough for you.

There is also a neighbouring beach that you can venture down onto from the resort.

Another feature at the Crown Lanta Resort & Spa is the Crown Reggae Bar, where you can sit inside the wooden built hut which has 6 bed like areas, or just below the hut there are rugs along the beach too and chill out whilst you watch the sun set, with views of Koh Phi Phi Island and Hong Island within sight. You get complimentary nibbles too! On Tuesdays and Thursdays there is fire throwing entertainment and singing on a Friday. My advice would be to get down to the Crown Reggae Bar for around 6pm - 6:15pm (during the months of January and February) as the sun sets around 6:30pm.

As we were there on our Honeymoon we booked up the Princess Suite which came with our own private pool overlooking the stunning beach and views looking south towards Koh Lanta itself. We could not fault our room. It was always clean and each night our bed would be decorated with freshly picked flowers and the room would smell fresh.

Having our own private pool gave us more options on where to sunbathe, and chill out. Other room options are available also. Such as swim up rooms, sea view and pool view rooms. There is also the King Suite which looked pretty impressive too, which includes own private pool too and the suite itself is much bigger than the Princess Suites. Another recommendation if you are a Honeymooner.

We were also offered the option to have a sunset dinner on the beach, which included a 4 course meal, stunning sunset, fireworks and Chinese Lanterns. It was most certainly a night to remember and you were waited on hand and foot by the staff. We did have to pay extra for this, but it also included breakfast in bed the following day, along side a fully body Thai Massage within the Spa and a 4 Island excursion around the Island of Koh Lanta as a set price. So we thought as we were on our Honeymoon it would be rude not too. It’s not compulsory to do the 4 Island trip but we do like to get out and about, but the option of just dinner and Thai Massage is there too.

I would highly recommend the sunset dinner, epically if you are on your Honeymoon - so romantic.

This resort is fantastic for honeymooners and couples of all ages. We had such an amazing time here in Koh Lanta and would highly recommend the Crown Lanta Resort & Spa.

This was our first time in Koh Lanta, and we fell in love with the island. A tuk tuk from the ferry cost us 100 THB to the hotel for 2 people.

We didn't have reservations when we arrived at Crown Lanta but knew they had rooms available from online. We had done our research on price/price so we knew the ball-park for what we were willing to pay. The manager greeted us and offered us a nightly rate that was $75/night more then we saw online. After some negotiating, we got what we wanted for the room and booked in 3 nights. The hotel is basically two resorts. If you have kids, I would suggest staying in the lower half of the hotel over looking the main pool and private beach. If you are a couple or like a little for quiet, I would book into the building closest to the reception area. There is a quiet pool and bar located here, we never saw any kids at this pool. I would also recommend getting the pool access rooms for 500THB more.

Pros: the resort grounds are beautiful and the rooms are spacious. We had an extra large patio (corner unit) which was nice. The air-con works great. The breakfast is ok, it is a buffet but they offer the same thing ever day. They have a free shuttle into town four times/day and if you want to rent a scooter, they offer them at the hotel.

Cons: the wifi doesn't work in the rooms, you have to be outside for it to work and it is best in the lobby. The breakfast gets old after the second day of the same food. The hotel restaurant food is ok, but expensive. You can go into town and eat better food for 1/4 price. They hotel charges 350 TBH + gas for the bikes for 1 day. You cannot get the bike for 1/2 day, and if you go into town, you can get a bike for 150TBH / day.

Overall, this resort is beautiful but feels more like a 'Mexican resort' then an authentic Thai resort. We did take a few tours of other hotels and Crown Lanta was my favourite but it comes with the price tag. I would stay here again but never pay full price, they always have a deal online.

Stayed at the crown for 6 nights, and straight away it felt like 2 hotels. We stayed at the lower part over looking the pool (which was nice) the restaurants and the main pool were over the other side of the hill. The bathrooms needed updating the tap was so stiff you needed 2 hands to turn it on. We only used the lower pool as it was inconvenient to get to the other as you had to get a lift as it was too hilly to walk. The decking everywhere was close to being dangerous and needs replacing.
I thought the breakfast was just ok but the staff were friendly unlike the reception (thankfully they have a new staff member Lyndsey who was very helpful). Would recommend the public beach round the corner was lovely and clean. Can't comment on the hotel restaurants as we ate in saladan every night which they had some lovely places to eat, would go back to koh lanta but not sure if we would go back to the crown.

Just want to say how great it was to stay at this lovely hotel on Koh Lanta. Whilst it was a more expensive hotel it was worth it. The staff throughout the hotel were lovely, friendly and helpful at all times. The hotel website photos do not do the hotel resort justice or perhaps it's on purpose to give element of surprise when you arrive! The grounds certainly surprised us, beautiful private beach but also with quick access to main beach nearby. The private Crown Reggae bar on 2nd private beach was lovely and amazing sunsets whilst enjoying lovely made cocktails!
We would like to say special thanks Tek, who we were disappointed in not being able to personally say thank you to (as he was on his break on the day we left) and also Kluoy in restaurant (beautiful genuine smile every time we saw her) however all the staff were very genuinely smiley people. Excellent customer service led by Run and team. We would recommend this hotel to anyone...thank you for making our stay enjoyable in beautiful Koh Lanta x
Lastly special thanks to Tam and team on our morning departure from hotel as there was a bit of anxiety on morning of leaving for airport as the tide was unusually lower than expected that morning for our taxi transfer to get across from North of the island to the South to collect us, but thankfully with some quick thinking we made it to Krabi with an hour to spare before take-off!

Room Tip: Rooms near main pool have better views

First of all: the place in Trip Advisor is wrong. It is in the north west corner of Kho Lanta, very closed to Saladang.

If you do not mind stairs, it is a good place to stay. We had a room with Access to the lower pool. That was nice.
The hotel offers a lot.

Free bycicle rent with those you can reach Saladang in 5 minutes for several Restaurants and markets.

You have two accesses to water. One side for snorkeling and the other the nice and long beach, which is really flat and has clear water. During the flood the beach has not much space but is enough.
You can also rent kanoos for free.

The only bad thing as written here before: Dirty towels and the shower in the room was not the greatest.

If you are there do not miss the snorkeling tour with speed boat to Kho Rok (We booked it in Saladeng for 1400 bhat. They all drive to the same beautiful spot!

We stayed for almost a week on this island and would come back here, but not to this hotel. Let's start with the only positive point: we had a room with direct access to the swimmingpool which is great if you want to go for a swim at any point of time. But our room was a bit dark and smelly, the reception rather unfriendly. We tried the poolbar and were very disappointed since we were the only guests there being watched carefully by the service personnel. Drinks rather pricey and not worth it. The first night we decided to eat at the Cliff restaurant. Very bad experience: badly lit up so that we couldn't properly read the menu. The waitress finally brought us torches, but took away right after ordering! When the food arrived, same problem: could hardly see what we were eating. Food very average, but very expensive, also the drinks. The service manager at the end tried to sell us a romantic dinner at the beach for 10000 Baht. Even though we were not interested he kept insisting the next day at breakfast. Well, the breakfast, another negative point: located at the top of a hill, you need to climb lots of hard stairs. Up there, it is very hot and hardly any ventilators available. Food very average. On the leisure side, all services very expensive. Scooters are rented much more expensive than in town, same goes for laundry service, spa and excursions (diving for example). In a nutshell: rather avoid this hotel!

My husband and I spent two weeks in Crown Lanta, and it was a nice stay. Rooms near main pool were nice with large balcony. From balcony was a nice view over the sea and it was pleasent to sit there and watch the sun go down.

Rooms were large and comfortable. Beds were a bit hard. Rooms were kept well clean and our cleaning lady was so nice.

Breakfast was fine and there was good selection of food available. Otherwise food was not good. Room service food and Cliff restaurant food taste not good. Thai food wast tasteles and also pizzas and hamburgers. This was perhaps the only reason why I wouldn't recommend this hotel. Hotel is a litle far from other restaurants and that is why we would have liked to use room service time to time, but after second try, we desided to go and eat out from the hotel. This was unfortunate and I was a litle astonished of this bad and tastles food, because tasty food is one of the most imporetant thing in Thailand to me. I love Thai food.
Hotel had its own small beach, which was nice. Pool was clean. Hotel had also quite nice gym which we used a lot and we could had proper pratice there. This is very imporetant to us.
What I dont like so much is, that right after when you go out from hotel area you will find a lot of litter all over. This was like that all over Koh Lanta where people lives.
We hired a scooter for 12 days and it is a exellent way to go from place to place and visit all nice beaches around Koh Lanta. In my opinion best beaches you will find from south end of the island, right after the main street ends.
