We stayed at The Houben for 6 nights and couldn't have wished for a better stay! The rooms are spotless, the views are just stunning and the staff all great - we couldn't have wished for a better stay. A huge thanks to Shana and the team for making our holiday so memorable. I can't wait for the day I can go back!

Room Tip: 3rd floor rooms have the best view!

The property is well situated and has beautiful views. Staff very friendly, Sasha runs the show but has a minimum amount of co-workers. Room is very nice and bed is comfortable.

However, considering the amount of money that we paid we expected more. Did not appreciate a lack of sun umbrellas around the pool and some guests "reserving" their sunbed early in the morning. Contrary to another reviewer, the water in the pool is NOT crystal clear, it was cloudy and I never observed any staff member checking it. There is no fitness facility but lot's and lot's of stairs on the property make up for that I guess.

Aside from that, getting to Koh Lanta is a big hassle. One of these days we will be reading about a ferry disaster as it was grossly over filled and no life jackets in sight. Getting on and off the boat is not a nice experience, trust me on that. Getting around on koh Lanta is expensive, best to rent a motorbike of your own.

Nice resort this, booked as the second stop in a well-customised Andaman Sky tour of the Krabi province and Phuket. The best things about this place are the sunsets, the rooms and the nearby Kantiang beach, would come back. The architecture is modern and we liked it, it was a pleasant counterpoint to the other more traditional hotels we stayed at – the Tubkaek just north of Ao Nang and Mom Tri’s on Phuket.

I agree with earlier review by pubcyclist that the property has great views, but is missing the character of the island. When we sat in our room, it was hard to tell we were in Thailand. Perhaps this is the intention, but not what we want on our 5th trip to the area, for which Pimilai is the preferred option for a luxurious Thai experience. After asking for a nicer room and finding out the suite we had was the best - we were told by front desk not to compare rooms between 4 and 5 stars at Pimilai which is fair. During high season, the ferry to koh lanta is becoming over extended with wait times of up to 2 hours making the Pimilai/Layana speedboat option even more attractive.

Pros:
- Great views and amazing sunsets
- Sasha (from Belgium); Thai lady from Chiang Mai at breakfast; and Thai lady from Bangkok from cleaning crew were all great throughout our stay
- Enjoyed seeing monkeys walk across the deck!!
- Suites were private from rest of resort
- Breakfast had potential to be good, but was inconsistent during our stay. For example, the waffle batter changed from one day in the week to another.
- Provided iPad mini for communication with house keeping staff which is clever, but it broke for us (not fault of hotel)
- lighting was well laid out and flexible such that you can move panes around for more or less lighting in bathroom

What can be improved:
- Would like to see Thai touches such as local scents and bath products (lemongrass, turmeric, etc, sounds/music and decor. The room welcomed is with Abba playing loudly from the stereo.
- Rooms are starting to show age with stained seating areas and sheets; and A/C sounded like it was going to take off.
- Expected more luxury touches given adjacency on tripadvisor to Pimilai and Layana, but perhaps our expectations were misguided.
- Room prices seemed high for property, and it would have been nice for complimentary mini bar and meals included.

In summary, this is a decent option for the right price in an amazing and uncrowded location on koh lanta. Given the great views, it's possible we would reconsider on future trip now that we know what to expect.

Koh Lanta is lovely, Kantieng Bay is beautiful and I firmly believe that The Houben is the best place from which to enjoy both.
As has been described many times on this site, The Houben enjoys a prime location with uninterrupted cliff-top sea views, it is strikingly modern in style and it benefits from having a manageress, and staff, who provide the kind of personal and yet unobtrusive service that you would expect in such a top class establishment.
The top-floor rooms offer fantastic views and a degree of privacy that allowed us to sleep with the curtains open and to enjoy the breath-taking sight of daybreak on the horizon – awesome.
The atmosphere at The (adults only) Houben, could be described as ‘stylish, calm and relaxing’ – it is a wonderful place to wind-down at the end of a holiday. If, no when, we begin to plan our return to Koh Lanta and Kantieng Bay, The Houben will be our first port of call.
Oh, and finally, my contribution to the ‘red pool’ debate. I’m afraid it’s a ‘no’ from me. Whilst the water is crystal clear and just about the perfect depth and temperature for a refreshing dip, the red tiles give the impression that you’re being invited for a swim in the Amazon as opposed to the Andaman. But don't let me put you off - it’s a personal preference thing I guess, and you might love it.

Dear frecktripper ,

Thank you for kind sharing the experience at The Houben Hotel,Koh Lanta on Trip advisor . It was so pleasure to hear your positive feed back ,since it encourages our team to service our guest from the start to finish of each guest’s stay. I know the red tiles pool ( Inspired from my football team ) could make our customers feel like that .It causes to our decision to use the salt treatment instead of any chemical or chlorine to damage your skin or your hairs . Kindly weigh the pros and the cons , i do very invite you to return to try , please let us know your future plan , you are the most welcome to The Houben Hotel , Koh Lanta.

Warm Regards,
Walter Houben

We recently stayed here for a few days as part of a longer stay in the Kantiang Bay area.
The theme of the hotel was lost on us I am afraid. It is an unusual design affording fantastic views from all rooms but we more enjoyed watching the sunset from one of the numerous small bars that can be found locally. The easiest way to describe the hotel was that it seemed to not have any soul. The room was very clean and nice. The staff were friendly. The breakfast was cooked fresh to order but....... It was not a place we wanted to hang out and chill in. We much preferred walking down towards the beach area and hanging out down there. With the hire of a scooter directly from the reception there are also a lot more nice restaurants that fall within reach locally.
It is also not worth paying for the upgrade for a jacuzzi room.
As I said, the hotel ticks a lot of boxes but the overall experience box we could not tick. Sorry.
