I just became a Tripadvisor member, just to be able to write this review. We have just come back from the Ancient Realm restaurant this evening. I emphasise: this is a review of the restaurant of the resort, not the resort accommodation facilities.
We arrived around 6 pm to a restaurant completely empty for guests save one couple. We where two families both with two "big" kids (4 and 6) and an infant. When we ordered our food, we specifically ordered the chlldren's food separately so that they could eat fairly quickly and then afterwards play on the beach. After 60 minutes of patient waiting, with children growing ever hungrier, we went to the bar to inquire about the food. They didn't know what we were talking about so we walked to the kitchen only to find no activity. We gently requested that the food be prepared quickly. 20 minutes later we got served three simple pasta dishes, the fourth still missing. We then walked back to the kitchen with the same reaction, they had again forgotten the last one. Last comment: the pasta dishes where lousy, prepared with overly use of ketchup and large chunks of onions. Result: four hungry children.
For the grown ups we ordered traditional thai dishes, like penang curry, massaman curry and noodle soups. The penang was prepared with at least one of the ingredients being rotten, so we never dared to eat it. We walked back to the bar to hand back the dish and explain the problem.
After a long and largely disappointing dinner we asked for the bill and there were no reduction for the rotten dish and no sign of being sorry for the poor service performance. We explained to the waiter, who only barely understood english, that we didn’t want to pay the full amount. Directly upon saying this, the waiter screamed at one of the fathers “You pay!” and then lashed out after him. When the other father stood up in chock, the waiter grabbed a beer bottle, held it upside down and threatened to hit him with the bottle. The waiter then ran away, and despite all his colleagues being alerted that there was something very strange going on, he managed to come running back only a few seconds later with a baseball bat or a similar large stick, screaming and threatening with the stick.
Our children were crying, in chock and fear, and we managed to send of the mothers with the children quickly walking off down the beach. After a while, the manager, “Arran”, came down to us. The threatening waiter was still there a few meters away. We explained to the manager, and at first it seemed that he was on top of the situation. But he started mumbling and speaking with the other staff in thai and offered no comprehensible translation of the discussion. Then we asked us what to do and how to fix the situation. To cut that bit short, we ended being asked to pay the bill (1300 bath) and we explained that we would obviously directly call the tourist police and contact the resort owners. Actually, we gladly paid the bill since we didn’t want to have any bad behaviour being caused by our doing.
We had to lye to the children when we came home and say that the waiter had apologised and that he was sorry. Just to calm them down and make them less afraid. They all had yogurts for late dinner, not to go to bed hungry.
Beyond comparison, this was the worst and most chocking experience in a restaurant ever. Not just in Thailand but anywhere the four of us have ever travelled (and we are all experienced travellers, both privately and professionally)!
