“Nice Hotel, but expensive for what and where it is”
Reviewed 20 September 2011

Stayed here last December but only just got round to the review.
We had a really relaxed and chilled out 2 weeks at the Pimalai.
Hotel was loverly, great rooms and grounds, though beware of the steep paths and stairs if you have mobility issues.... a good work out. Staff generally very pleasant and helpful. Food was pretty good but not as high a quality as I would have expected from a hotel that pitches itself at this level.
As mentioned by many others on this site, the hotel is a tad on the expensive side, both to stay at and for drinks and anything extra. Another thing to watch out for is at checkout time. Make sure you pay in local currency if using a credit card as the exchange rate used by the hotel to British pounds is very poor. I explicitly asked to pay in local currency but the credit card was charged in £.....this cost me over £100 extra.

My husband and I stayed at Pimalai Resort Hotel on the island Koh Lanta in Thailand in August 2011 on a holiday arranged by Andaman Sky Co.Ltd. We were met off the ferry from the mainland to the island by the hotel minivan. On arriving at the resort we were greeted with cold drinks and garlands of flowers and then driven in a golf buggy through shady gardens to our pool villa,

The location of Pimali is perfect: the resort is spread over a densely wooded hillside overlooking the tranquil Andaman Sea. Is it unique? I can't say, but I have never seen anything more charming.

The architecture of the villas and the design features are completely Thai. The solid wood furniture, the shining tiles and the modern bathroon are all first class. The firm but yielding mattresses and the fine linen, combined with the silence, ensure that you will have a restful night. If silence puzzles you, the muted sound of waves breaking on the shore will send you off to a peaceful sleep. The villas are airconditioned.

The five-star resort covers a large area of the island Koh Lanta. We enjoyed walking from our villa along the tree-lined paths to reach the different restaurants, bars and pools. However, if you prefer you can 'phone for one of the resort's buggies to ferry you to your destination.

There is a choice of restaurants. In the Seven Seas Restaurant, for breakfast the chef manages an amazing selection of Thai and western dishes , including croissants, granary bread and bacon and eggs. On different nights the dinner menu offers Italian fare or French fare and so on. We went in a group of eight to the Rak Takay Beachside restaurant where we enjoyed a buffet which catered for everyone's taste.

Many villas have small pools. The resort's infinity pools are larger, crystal clear and not too busy, and the Andaman Sea beckons across a strip of white sand.

The Pimalai Resort Spa offers all types of massage and beauty treatments. Anyone will be spoiled for choice.

It has been our experience in some other top-quality hotels that the service can be grudging and condescending. Here the opposite is the case: all the waiters, waitresses, receptionists, maids and bellboys gave service with a smile and made us feel welcome guests. I don't know the reason: possibly they are glad to be working at Pimalai.

From all parts of the resort the villas look out over the densely wooded hillside across the Andaman Sea to the horizon. It is difficult to describe the feeling that arises from this marriage of the natural beauty of the landscape and the seascape with the sophisticated environment of Pimalai. Sitting on the veranda, looking out over the canopy of trees down to the sea and across to the silhouette of Koh Haa on the horizon, and hearing nothing but the waves breaking on the shore was an incredibly tranquil experience.

In a nutshell, we have never stayed anywhere like Pimalai before with the beauty of the setting, the peacefulness and the excellent accommodation and service. Go there and see for yourselves.

We stayed here in August. The hotel and its surroundings are beautiful and can't be beaten. The breakfast is sumptious and luxurious. The only issue we had was that it was very quiet and as result the resort had an eerie deserted feel about it. There isn't a lot else to do locally and you are a long way to the south of the island. Staff very friendly though especially Green!

Pimalai is definitely a great resort: well manicured lawns, pretty pools, fantastic beach with comfortable loungers and fun boogie boards/balls at your disposal, tranquil spa, and super staff. It's not stylish in an original or special way, but it is very nice. The restaurants were disappointingly average, esp the bland seafood grill buffet (I would have expected more Thai flavours). However, beware of the hidden cost of actually getting to the darn place. It's a pretty drive or boat road from the main port, but boy it's not cheap: nearly the cost of a night's stay, which is ridiculous and would make me think twice about returning. NB: we stayed in February, so perhaps it has changed? Check to be sure!

By far the best hotel I`ve been to.Lovely location, great food, beautiful villas and white sand on the beach.Fun bar "Why not" in the middle of the beach to enjoy cocktails and listen to chilling live music.
We stayed in one of the highest villas on top of the hill and had to call minicars to get to the beach/restaurants ,however they always came within minutes.
Food was excellent in each of the restaurants.Staff is friendly and helpful.Big beautiful clean pools with slightly chilly water to cool off after the hot sun.

We had a week at the Pimalai (first week of August 2011), and really enjoyed it. We traveled as a family with two young boys (4&5) and a baby (9m), and had a room on the beach (Pavilion Suite, which led directly onto the beach). We requested extra beds for the children so that they had a bed each, and even with a double bed, two single beds and a full size baby cot, the room did not feel cramped.
The setting is beautiful (sunsets are particularly stunning, especially from up the hill at the restaurants/ pool area which overlook the whole bay), and very well kept. Overall, the service and standards shown around the hotel were great from start to finish - all the staff were extremely accommodating and helpful (front desk / housekeeping / F&B etc) - and we thoroughly enjoyed our week, and would definitely consider returning (despite there being so many other millions of places to visit instead!).

Weather-wise, we arrived in a downpour and it lasted the day, but it only showered once or twice for the rest of the week (much less than the daily hour or two that we had anticipated in the 'green' season).

Kids / baby facilities - the overall feel of the hotel is that it is not aimed at small children... the pools are not designed with kids in mind, and they are not allowed in part of one of them, but this did not bother us at all - the beach is great, and the waves were perfect for boogie boarding, so we spent most of our time doing that!
High chairs are available in all the restaurants for babies, but these are pretty old and run down, and were not cleaned in between uses (we were not fussy about this, given that we are on our third child, but it was the one thing that was out of line with the rest of the standards for the resort, and I was surprised that noone noticed the filth left on the wet serviettes I used each day in an attempt to leave the high chair cleaner for the next use...this was done somewhat in vain, as they really were pretty grotty and had probably not been cleaned in months!). However, this really was a minor thing, and probably the only 'complaint' we could find about the place.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Pimalai, and will seriously consider another trip there in the future.

Room Tip: Room of beach villa was spacey - we had a double bed, two singles for children + a baby cot, and it...

My husband and I have just come back from 2 weeks at pimalai and enjoyed every second of it!

From the moment we arrived at Krabi airport we were treated like royalty. The transfer wasn't bad at all(even in low season) and definitely worth the travelling once you get there!

On arrival we were treated to champagne and 'honeymoon' cake and our bed was beautifully decorated with flowers- a lovely touch.

We stayed in a pool villa in the hills which was amazing! Stunning views (especially of sunset) and the villa was huge and beautiful! We stayed in 602 which I felt was an ideal location as when in the villa we had complete privacy but we were only a minute walk from the restaurants and reception, but some of the villas were much further away. However, just ring reception if you want to go any where and they send a car to pick you up! We did use this service a few times when going to the beach as this is quite a walk(especially in the heat).

The staff were fantastic and I can honestly say I have never had such good service from anywhere else! All staff spoke excellent English and were more than happy to teach us a bit of Thai too!

The food was also of a very high quality and there was a huge selection from the 3 different restaurants( there are an extra 2 but only 3/5 are open in low season). We were half board which was well worth the money! Breakfast was great and plentiful and we were allowed to chose a starter, main and dessert as part of our package for dinner.

The spa is well worth a visit- we went twice and thought it was good value compared to what we have paid elsewhere. You can get massages down the road and on beach for a fraction if the price but I didn't like the look of them.

On the whole, we had an amazing honeymoon at pimalai and felt that the resort did everything they could to make it perfect for us! We highly recommend it!
