“Perfect retreat”
Reviewed 8 March 2014

We stayed here in February and it was the last stop on our 3 week trip. We spent 9 days soaking up the sun and enjoying the hotel surroundings. This is a 5 star hotel. Just. It has every thing you would expect from a five star hotel but just lacks a little refinement. The pool is great but not fantastic. The rooms are spacious and lovely but not fabulous. The bar is good but not amazing. The Spa, however, is tremendous and beats anything we've ever been to.

We arranged our transfers through the hotel and we weren't disappointed. A luxury shared taxi to the private dock (50 mins) and then a speedboat (35 min) direct to the hotel jetty. When i compared the prices for a local transfer (taxi-ferry-taxi) the hotel did come out more expensive but it was the best way to arrive at your hotel and really adds to the experience. On our way home we met a couple who had used the local ferry to get to the hotel. They were on the Pimalai speedboat back to Krabi so i guess that says it all. They said the ferry was more for the backpackers.

We stayed in a standard room that backed onto the jungle. We had a small view of the sea but we spent little time in the room. Keep your eyes for the monkeys. They really are there! We looked every day and eventually they appeared. There's more than enough room for an additional 2 small people should you be traveling with children. The TV channels are not great but if you have a computer they do have ports to connect, just remember to bring the cable.

The restaurants at the hotel are what you would expect. Quite expensive given the surroundings. There are at least 4 other restaurants on the beach within a 5 min walk. Local prices and very good. We only every had breakfast at the hotel but that was great and the staff were very sweet.

Overall the hotel is lovely. Its maybe a little lacking in atmosphere but i think that's more to do with the type of people staying there rather than the hotel itself. There were plenty of honeymooners and couples with young children. We were surprised at the number of children given that this is not advertised as a child friendly hotel as such. That said we managed to find a quite spot during the day.

This is a nice hotel and by far one of the best locations on Koh Lanta. Its simple 5 star but we loved it.

Dear Travel Hippos. Many thanks for placing your nice review; it comes at the right time and will help to discredit the recent review placed by a nasty person a few days ago “non accommodating service”, to which I have now replied (please take the time to read) and for which I will also do my very best to have it removed from T.A .
Indeed , quite a lot of kids this year. This happens especially at time of European holidays / also at time of Chinese New Year during which expat families living nearby Thailand take a short flight to visit us. Sorry about the monkeys! Can be quite cheeky sometimes. Thanks for staying with us. Sunny rgds from Lanta! Franck

We had been wondering if there was such a thing as a quiet, remote beach in Thailand - since there's no such thing as a private beach. This is far enough from Krabi and any other place to grab a longboat, ferry or launch - the only traffic from boats are the few sailboats that drop anchor just off shore.
The food, spa…everything at Pimalai is outstanding. Leave your market adventures for Chiang Mai or other areas. This is a place to relax and just enjoy the sea, by kayak, snorkeling or sailboat.

Room Tip: if you like to having a breeze and prefer the pool to salt water - choose the hillside/pool villas...

My husband and I have recently returned from an all too short visit to Pimalai. We stayed in a Pavillion Suite which was literally steps away from the beautiful beach. The suite itself is very spacious and well appointed offering a stunning sea view outlook - nothing quite as romantic as sitting on your private veranda viewing the sunset sipping a glass of wine with the person you love.

Pimalai is quite simply paradise, built with great respect for the surrounding natural habitat. The restaurants were excellent although we ate mostly in the Spice N'Rice Thai restaurant (we were in Thailand after all and also happen to love Thai food) were we experienced the most exquisite food and attentative and friendly service.

We also visited the Spa which was excellent and the treatment areas which were located along pretty walkways were peaceful and beautiful. The quality of the treatments was excellent.

One thing I would like to mention that I found in the literature in our room is that more than half of the employees at Pimalai are local to the immediate area and often employed straight from school. I believe that they are offered further education in English as well as training at the hotel and I have to say that rarely have I come across more genuinely willing to please staff than at Pimalai.

So anyway, next year I have a date with my husband, same time same place ...

So thank you for the great review & for highlighting/ praising the staff - indeed more that 50% originates from the island and we spend a great deal of time in training them and bringing them to the level where they are; challenging but rewarding as they remain loyal to us. Look forward seeing you back sometimes in the future. Sunny Rgds from Lanta. Franck

My husband and I stayed here for the second time for 4 nights in February in a Deluxe Room after completely falling in love with this hotel last year, and again we were not disappointed in any way.

The hotel is located in the quiet but stunning Kantiang Bay. There is a little village about 10 minutes’ walk from the hotel where there are a few bars and restaurants (Drunken Sailors is particularly good). Same Same but Different next door to the hotel is also excellent so definitely worth a visit.

Ko Lanta is beautiful; we explored the island by motorbike as the main roads are pretty quiet so we felt quite safe.

The breakfast buffet was superb with some 5 star touches such as smoked salmon.

The upper pool has a real wow factor; the view of the bay is awesome!

We have stayed in a number of hotels in Thailand but this is our favourite and we will definitely return in the future.

We stayed here for 5 nights in february, as a part of our honeymoon. We picked this hotel as our main 'honeymoon stay' and it certainly didn't disappoint.

From the second we got on the speedboat to the second we left, we thoroughly enjoyed every single second.

We were taken down to our room by the staff to find out we had been given a complimentary honeymoon upgrade to a beach view pavilion, and were greeted with a bottle of fizz, some honeymoon cake and some cookies. The upgrade alone nearly made our honeymoon worth while.

Being in a beach pavilion was exceptional, we had our own conservatory to escape the heat and our own personal decking on the beach, nearly reason enough to never leave the room!

When we did venture out we were genuinely amazed at every turn all through our stay. Every restaurant has exceptional food and drink. The valentines dinner at the seven seas was a particular highlight, and so was the surf and turf buffet down at the beach restaurant. We even got room service one night, and that was amazing too.

We had a couples spa, which was amazing and definitely worth the visit.

Most importantly though, we'd like to thank the staff. Every single one of them we spoke to or crossed paths with was friendly and helpful and always made an effort. I've read a few reviews on here that suggest otherwise, and its simply not true, they're all outstanding.

Anyone looking to stay here should definitely book now, this was certainly a holiday we'll never forget, and this hotel was the main reason for that.

We spent a week at the Pimalai Resort and it has just become our favourite hotel. Where to start… Well the only way to arrive is by the hotel speed boat, we timed it so that we arrived just as the sun was going down. The manager Franck was there to greet us and to help my husband walk along the rocking floating jetty. We were greeted with flower garlands and whisked off to our room. A nice room but a shame about the greenery and palms almost blocking the whole window. No problem the following morning I went to reception and asked if they could cut the greenery back and et voila!! Within four hours it was all cut back including the cashew trees down below and there it was a panorama of the beach including the floating jetty where we watched guests come and go. Thank you Bee and Franck.
The beds were very comfortable and the aircon worked well. The beach area worked well, the attentive staff had all the toys and it is pleasant NOT to have electric beach kit banana boats, jet skies and the like, tales of Kho Pipi abound.
The staff were delightful always greeting us their hands together and Kar Coon Kar (don't know what it means but we always responded, not always in the correct order) we got to know many of them as they moved around the hotel sometimes serving us breakfast, sometimes drinks on the beach. Rather shamefully after three days they greeted us at happy hour on the beach with the room number and "two gin and tonics?".
We moved around the hotel eating our meals as and when we felt appropriate though we never got to the top restaurant it was always tomorrow which never came. We also went to the beach bars, don't forget to try the delicious chicken and cashew nuts at Same Same but Different. We hired a car one day for a trip around the island and went on the sunset snorkelling trip which was a must. We met some of the wildlife including a young water monitor who took a short cut across the pool, which cleared it pretty fast! Also one afternoon a small green snake with a baby bird in its mouth was hanging out of the thatch, the guests we're not phased by that and having taking their photographs allowed the security man to relocate it. We never saw the monkeys though we heard them.
We visited our daughter who was staying at the Rawi Warin, they have water monitors who scrounge for croissant at breakfast. It is very nice there, but the Pimalai is class. We also went up to Noon, they will collect you from the hotel, go on Wednesday and they have a wine tasting night. The first time we went we had a really good meal, the second time it was just all right.
Franck runs a very efficient hotel, he has been there a good few years and there is little that has not been addressed - for instance in the early morning the guests are driven around the hillside by car rather than electric buggy as the latter are noisy and might disturb the guests. We appreciated the daily hotel news letter on the breakfast table and if you go there don't forget to try the Eggs Pimalai for breakfast.

Dear EleHunter from Surrey - Thank you for our very nice review ; much appreciated , especially after the bad review we just received & we do not believe to be genuine . And i will place soon a reply to clarify also trying to remove it from TA.
So that makes me much happier & comfortable of what are trying to achieve here and i believe we are on the right tracks. Sure we are not perfect but we always look at daily if there are things we can do better than the day before.
The real Thai Word is "Kob Khun Krup" for gent / "Kob Khun Kha" for lady. Thank you for staying with us. Sunny rgds from Lanta.
